Conley Top Candidate For Comeback Year New Slant On Things tt Svinf i. (Trr S'ntinrl Thursday, July 2, 1959 Throvs Third 1959 Season A opem i in i vW -y- 1 US ii 'Hi. i I Not Only One Of Them I Actually Aided And Abetted Him Last week I met one of them. I have been hearing about them for a long time, but to the best of my knowledge, I had never come face-to-face with one. I was really quite surprised at what I saw.

lie was an elderly man who looked like someone's grandfather, a kindly, understanding and pleasant sort of fellow. Since we met on a local stream, I thought to myself. "He looks like the type who will teach his grandchildren the art of fishing." As the rest of the story unfolds you will see why I hope this never happens. Seems the old boy had some car trouble and needed a push. He climbed in my truck and as we drove to his car he recapped his fishing for the day, which had resulted in a nice limit of trout.

I gave him a push and his car started and he drove off. I figured this ended the situation and set about my own fishing. The fishing was good with plenty of planted trout in the creek. I had the area pretty much to myself and was having a ball. The fish were float naturally and were acting a bit sulky about striking, but there was enough action About an hour after I had door slam and a few seconds with fishing gear.

That's when I realized I had not only met one of them but had actually aided one. looking old gent whom I had another batch of trout. I didn't know what to do. I was afraid if I started to tell him the error of his ways I would go off the deep end and say things I shouldn't. Friend, I tell you.

if I have ever wished to see Mac (Game Warden Forrest McDermott) come on a scene it was then, for I would have squealed on you so loud But Mac didn't show. I finished my limit and went in search of McDermott. I couldn't find him, so I guess the old gent got away with it. I leave the old boy with this wish: I hope that every time I go fishing I find you with a stalled car. Friend, as far as I am concerned, you can walk home.

Johnny Pierce One-Hitter Of John Pierce threw his third hitter and Mike Ohvlen banged a home run and drove in three runs as the front-running Orioles dumped the Redlegs 6-0 last night In a Pony league game at Harvey West stadium. Pierce was mowing down the Redlegs on no hits and 16 strikeouts until the last inning when Byron Shields drove a fast ball off the right field fence for a double. Olivieri's homer came in the first inning when the Orioles scored three times. They pushed across three more runs in the third to ice the game. In the second game the White's Giants had to fight tbe clock to get in four innings as they bounced the SC Lumber Company Athletics 16-5 in a wild contest. I don know what the rest of you call these people, but to me they are game hogs. And if there is anything that is despicable and low, it is a game hog. The very essence of hunting and fishing is sportsmanship, and sportsmanship means playing the game by the rules. There are a lot of rules that I don't agree with regarding hunting and fishing, but they are still the rules of the game and must be followed. The 6-foot-8 right hander, who couldn't win a game last season for pennant-winning Milwaukee underscored his selection to the All-Star staff by pitching his sec ond shutout Wednesday night, beating Pittsburgh 1-0 with a five hitter. It was the sixth victory in 10 decisions lor Conley. In the only other NL game, the Chicago Cubs defeated St.

The Phils had six hits, using Just one to score in the third inning against loser Ron Kline (6-6). Joe Koppe walked, stole second and came home on Richie Ashburn's single. The Cubs overhauled a 5-1 Car dinal lead with four runs in the eighth, then won it in the ninth when Ernie Banks singled, moved up on an infield out and scored on Bobby Thomson's single.

(AP Wirephoto.) Little League Tourney Plans On Schedule Plans are progressing right on schedule for the Northern Divisional Little League tournament scheduled at Harvey West Little League stadium, August 13-16, Tournament Director Walt Bet-tencourt announced today.

Several changes are being made at the park. An electric scoreboard is being installed under the direction of Jim Doyle and additional bleachers will be put in down the right field line by Rec reation Director Carl Bengston. Games will be at about 2 and 5 p.m. on I nday and Saturday afternoons. The players will arrive Thursday, August 13 and will leave Sunday, August 16.

Expenses for the tournament will be made by gates, program advertising and an awards barbecue Saturday night after the final game. The total needed ranges between $750 $1000. The players, 11-12 year old. representing four of northern California most outstanding all-star teams, will be housed at Turner gym and fed in the high school cafeteria. Friday night the boys will be treated to entertainment at the boardwalk as guests of the Seaside company.

Bettencourt pointed out that a Santa Cruz team will not necessarily participate as the local clubs will have to qualify right up the line of different tournament levels starting with the area competition at the Mid-County park. This tourney is a counterpart of the state tournament at San Bernardino last year as that event has been split in two. The winner will qualify for the Regional tournament at Sacramento with the winner there heading to Williamsport, for the World Series. FIGHTS ByThe Associated Press Louisville, Ky. Number one proved prophetic for Italy's SC Merchants Banned By ASA For Season The Santa Cruz Merchants soft-ball team has been barred from American Softball association play for the remainder of the 1959 season, Topper Arnett, district commissioner from Pacific Grove, announced recently. It is believed that the banning of the Santa Cruz town team was a direct result of the Merchants' forfeiture in the district tournament at Pacific Grove. Arnett announced Camp Evers store will take the Merchants place in the Tri-County league, an ASA organization. Camp Evers manager, Jim Fitzpatnck, announced he has bolstered the team with the addition of four players from the Soquel Merchant team of the city 'A' league. Larry Parr.

T. J. Scott, Doug Kranich and Neil Partlow have been added to the Beaver roster. Two Merchant players, Wayne Richards and Mel Bowen, have been on the Camp Evers roster since the start of the season. Camp Evers will make its first Tri-County league appearance here tomorrow night against an unknown onnonent.

Thev will start with a fresh record, receiving credit for neither a win nor a loss scored py tne banta Cruz Merchant team earlier. Rod And Gun The Santa Cruz Rod and Gun club is holding a meeting July 6th at 7:30 p.m. at the St. George hotel to discuss important business matters. Also, a motion picture, Marine Life, will be shown.

He scattered seven hits and gave up single runs in the second and seventh innings.

The Naval Reserve scored four times in the first inning and then held off the Adolphs squad to beat them 9-7 in the league game. So be forewarned, if your club plans a feeding program, stay well within the federal regulations or you may have trouble. Deer Season Is Almost Here Many of us are getting that butterfly feeling in our stomachs anticipating deer season in about three weeks (July 25).

Guns are being checked over and cleaned, up, camping gear readied and maps studied in preparation. The coastal season is going to be a hot proposition this year eatherwise. Much of the north coast is dry and fire hazardous, but there seems to be plenty of browse. The deer look sleek and healthy and I have seen some mighty fine bucks just waiting for the season to open. With the longer season this year, there should be some increase in the inland season total bag, although the best hunting still will be the last of the season.

The big thing to watch for is fire. As dry as the country is, a fire would really be disastrous. Trout Planting Schedule Drying streams and rising water temperatures are forcing an early end to this year's trout planting on most streams and lakes in the coastal counties. The only hopeful note was that a return of cool, foggy weather might restore proper conditions on some coastal reservoirs. South, of the Bay, only the Big Sur and Carmel rivers and Arroyo Seco creek in Monterey county; the San Lorenzo river, Bear, Fall and San Vicente creeks in Santa Cruz county; Pescadero creek and upper Bean Hollow lake in San Mateo county remained on the planting list.

All were scheduled for stocking this week. SPORTS CALENDAR Stengel Adds Ted To All-Stars TODAY Baseball Pony Grads Braves vs. Indians, 7:30 p.m., Harvey West stadium. American Little League Tigers vs. Indians and Red Sox vs.
