I would have to go along with Brian.

It really is out ot nis lianas, just as it is out of the hands of ail athletes," Cosell and McKay made much of the tact that the really important decisions in the life of an athlete nowadays are not his to make. The club owners the leagues, the promoters lawyers and even Congress make the important decisions now. The first half hour of the show was entitled "The Anato my of a Heavyweight Fight" in which Cosel! interviewed fight promoter jack Kenr CooKe Muhammad Ali anci Joe Fra zier, as well as their lawyers After the interview, in which it was revealed that each fighter would probably walk off with $6,000,000 when the fight occurs in Los Angeles in September, Cosell commented on how nei ther fighter had anything to say about when or where the fight might be. Cooke, a former Canadian who has become "mister big" in the sports world, has the option to promote the Ali Frazier fight. He played cute with Cosell.

In fact Cooke comes over as a real ham actor who can't resist television camera or a radio microphone, The show wound up with the story of little Cathy Rigby of Los Alamos, south' of Los Angeles. She was shown working out on the bars. Miss Rigby, who almost died because of her premature birth, is the first anrl only American to win a tnedl in international gymnastics competition. He not only is a student at this famous old university, he is black, and he is a better than average basketball player. In fact, there are some coaches in college circles who consider him one of the better back men in basketball. His brother Bruce is the star 49er defensive back. Taylor comes from a poor black family in northern New Jersey. He is one of those fortunate young people who has been able to make his dreams come true, or very nearly so.

His ambition had been to play basketball on the U.S. Olympic team in Munich, Germany next summer, and graduate from Princeton with a degree, after which he would enjoy the fruits of his labors, plaving professional basketball. At the start of his junior year at Princeton it appeared that Brian wouM realize all his dreams. In the last several months Taylor has had to change his dreams drastically. He will not play basketball the U.S.

Olympic team, and his degree may have to be delayed for a while. This comes about because the owners of several dozen basketball clubs in two leagues are petitioning congress "to merge the Natioal Basketball Association and the American Basketball Association. Bight now, before that merger is approved. Brian csn sign a plaving contract with the New York Nicks for $500,000. If he waits until he graduates in 1973, the merger might take place and he would have to play for whatever the owners wanted him to play for! All this was dramatically told last Monday night on one of those television hours which is long long overdue, a probing sports ABC advertised the show as an occasional series starring Howard Cosell and Jim McKay.

The title was ABC day Nights Sports" and wi. probably show up from time to time. If any show was ever needed on television it was just this sort of affair. "Monday Night Sports" is the kind of sports show you don't ordinarily get to see on TV. It was honestly hard bit ting.

The show managed to ignore the owners, the promoters, the press agents and the television sports officials who fear for 'some of the contracts they now have with professional sports. This first effort was free of all those bugaboos. McKay, who has been handling ABC's Wide World of Sports for over 10 years surprised a lot of people. He wasn't the smiling "host" of some obscure sporting event of Saturday afternoon. He was a very astute observer of trie sports scene.

He' rightly observed after the Thomas interview, that S5D0, 000 not only had changed the plans of one young man, but the plans and dreams of the entire family. Taylor's father was interviewed and confirmed that his whole family was disappointed about their son and brother, but went along with his decision to quit college and play professional basketball. "We are a poor family." the elder Thomas said, "and we have waited a long time for this money. We are sorry Brian won't be able to play on the Olympic teams, but we go along with his decision 100 percent.
