A local Negro cab driver reported that Negro drivers who apply to Checker Cabs are hired by the owner and placed with Metro Cab Company. Metro and Checker are owned by the same individual. Further checks revealed that the lilly-white driven Checker Cabs are equipped with radios and meters, Metro Cabs are not so equipped and are operated as Cars For Hire.

Checker Cabs are listed as TAXIS because they are equipped with radios and meters. Therefore they are allowed, to dispatch and pick up fares 'anywhere in the city. Due to lack of equipment, Metro Cabs are considered Cars For. Hire and are limited to operation from stands. This particular Negro driver stated that he feels the owner of Checker and Metro Cabs is discriminating against the Negro driver by refusing to allow him to work for equipped Checker Cabs.

The VOICE talked with F. Hewatt, owner of Checker and Metro Cabs and he confirmed that Negro are not employed with Checker Cabs. About 75 of the drivers own their cars, according to Hewatt, and only one Metrp Cab has radio equipment. He said that Metro Cabs are operated "kinda like" the Car For Hire. V. Williamson was unamiously elected to the office of vice president of the Board of Alderman Monday during its reorganizational meeting.
