Benirschkes field goal boosts Chargers past Dolphins in OT By KEN CHRISTENSEN SpctUI lo The Capital Times DEER HUNTERS who havent received permission to hunt on private farmlands or woodlots in southern Wisconsin are in deep trouble.

A spot check of Columbia, Sauk, Iowa, and Dane Counties indicates that no less than 75 percent of all private lands are now posted. To find out why, we talked to a number of farmers in the area. Leroy Haag runs a 300-acre dairy farm in deer country near Mt. lloreb. Like his neighbors, Haag has been forced lo post his land.

"If I didn't, we wouldn't dare go outside on opening day of the deer season," he said. "Three years ago, a car actually ran a deer down in my corn field during the gun season. Last year, while we were hunting with neighbors, a gang from Milwaukee tried bluffing us off our own land, he said. We don't like calling the sheriff, but we did on that one." If hunters would ask permission to hunt, things would be a lot better, according to Haag. NEAR BLACK Earth, Krling Martinson runs a small 80-acre sheep farm.

He rents an adjacent wood-covered ridge which is now posted. Marlinsen explained why "First, some hunters shot out my truck windshield. Then, they broke down my sheep fence and I lost four sheep that got into the dense woods. My neighbor posted his section of the ridge after some of his buildings were shot up. Last year two deer hunters clear-cut an opening for a deer stand on the ridge; then they proceeded to spray paint on the trees with blaze orange along a half-mile trail back to the road." Another neighbor of Martinsen lost a heifer that got loose during the last deer hunting season.

Hunters stripped the hind quarters and left the rest. Martinsen is now forced to keep his sheep close to the barn during the gun season or suffer the consequences. "We still have a group of courteous sportsmen from Madison, who we welcome, he said, "and we also get a few hunters who spoil It for the rest." There should be no question where the blame should be placed for all the posted land. BIG BOOM Dante didnt say it, but come 6:30 Saturday morning, all hell will break loose as some 625,000 orange-clad deer hunters announce the opening of the 1980 deer season. The barrage will be aimed at Wisconsin's wily white tall.

The boom of shot guns and the crack of deer rifles will continue off and on all day Saturday, and all but end completely by noon Sunday. By then, 50 percent of the state's total deer harvest will have been taken, according to Frank Haberland, big game specialist with the Department of Natural Resources. With a herd estimated at 700,000 and the new one person, any deer permit" in use, Haberland estimates that one in six (hunters) will get a deer, with only one in 10 coming home with bragging antlers. PROBLEM AREA Those who plan to hunt Unit 70A are cautioned of a printing error on page 18 of the regulations book. Besides the hard-to-follow boundary lines between Dane and Iowa Counties, the picture reads, buck PLUS quota." It should read, "buck OR quota" deer.

There also is an error on page 20 when it refers in several places to Buck PLUS quota permit." It should read, Buck or any-sex permit deer. Hunters are also reminded that the Dane County sector is open to muzzle loaders and shotguns only. DEER REGISTRATION Greg Matthews with the DNR says a ant hunting. Deer prospects for the gun season are good. Grant County Squirrel and grouse hunting continue to be excellent.

Duck hunting is poor to fair. Panfish fishing continues to be very good. Richland County Fishing success has been poor. Trapping is slow. Mainly bucks have been registered in the bow season.

Green County Trappers are harvesting good numbers or muskrats in county waters. Raccoon, pheasant and squirrel hunters continue to have fair success, and pressure remains good. Row hunters have had excellent early season results including some animals that meet record book minimums. Green Lake County An abundance of swans are in the area as they are migrating. The deer season looks good.

Bucks are still in rut. Hunters should have excellent success. There is a high population of geese on Big Green take. Woodley to Nathan. Fullback Terry Robiskies six-yard scoring run gave Miami an early 7-0 lead, but the Chargers stormed back with an 11-play, 73-yard drive capped by Fouls' scoring pass to Clarence Williams.

Benirschkes 37-yard field goal made it 10-7. The teams exchanged touchdowns Woodley's pass to Nathan and Fouts throw to Joiner before Miami's Uwe von Schamann kicked a 48-yard field goal three second before halftime to tie the game at 17-17. It was the second overtime victory of the year for the Chargers, who beat Oakland, 30-24, in the second game of the season. The Dolphins dropped to 6-6 and fell out of a third-place tie with Baltimore in the AFC East. Delvln Williams dive for a touchdown on a fourth-and-one play from the Chargers one-yard-line with 1:21 remaining in regulation forced the overtime period as the Dolphins rallied from a 24-17 deficit. The Dolphins had been stopped on downs at the San Diego one-yard-line on their previous possession. San Diego quarterback Dan Fouls completed ,25 of 41 passes for 230 yards to improve his season total to 3,530. He had scoring passes of four yards to running back Clarence Williams and seven and six yards, respectively, to wide receivers Charlie Joiner and John Jefferson.

But the Dolphins young secondary, consisting of one second-year starter and three first-year starters, refused to give up big gainers to Fouts. "Obviously Miami had a game plan to take away our deep stuff," said Fouts. "We had to take short stuff, be satisfied with it and let Miami get frustrated giving up nine and II jarders." Woodley, starting for the sixth straight game since veteran Bob Griese injured his shoulder, hit 22 of 34 passes for 251 yards. He threw a touchdown pass of seven yards to Tony Nathan to complete a drive keyed by a 61 -yard pass play from turkey hunt for 1983 Forty-five turkeys were released in Vernon County in 1976 and 1977. DNR wildlife manager Ron Nicklaus of La Crosse said the population may total 2,000 to 3,000 by 1983.

Three five-day periods Thursday to Monday were proposed. Permits would be awarded on a random basis. At least 20 percent of them would be set aside for landowners with at least 40 acres in the zones. THE LAW According to Capt. Richard Josephson of the Dane County sheriffs department, violating the county's trespass ordinance could bring penalties of up to $200, depending on the circumstances.

"To be on the safe side, get permission before you trespass on another mans land, he cautioned. Area police and county traffic personnel will be cooperating with the sheriff's department again this year In responding to illegal trespass, Josephson noted. Dane, Iowa, Sauk, and Columbia Counties have ordinances similar to State regulations. They read in part, a person trespasses if he enters any enclosed or cultivated land of another to kill birds or animals without permission, enters Qr remains on land of another after being notified by its owner or occupant not to enter or remain, enters any enclosed or cultivated lands of another with a vehicle. Notice is given not to trespass if the land is posted by signs eleven inches square and place in two conspicuous places for every forty acres to be protected.

Signs must be signed by owner or legal occupant. BIG MONEY The minimum fine for the illegal possession (untagged) of deer or the shine of same while in possession of a weapon carries a minimum fine of $1,869 plus revocation of hunting license for three years. To shine without weapons from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Dec.

31 can cost a maximum $1,869 as well. COLOR REQUIRED For the first time, blaze-orange clothing will be required for anyone hunting anything, except waterfowl, during deerhunting season. At least 50 percent of the -hunter's outer clothing above the waist, including hats, must be of the highly-visible color commonly known as hunter orange, fluorescent orange, flame orange or fluorescent blaze orange. Red and bright yellow are not legal substitutes for the orange color requirement. ALL WET Haberland notes that many of the swamps in the prime deer country in the northern part of the state are very wet.

If we dont get a hard freeze before the season opens, some hunters are going to have difficulty getting out there," he said. Some lakes will be frozen over near Park Falls, but marshes and swamps will be particularly wet around Eau Claire. A BIG ONE A buck weighing 228 pounds dressed and having a 12-point rack with a 22-inch spread was shot by an archer near Shawano last week. The deer might have been the largest ever taken by bow and arrow in Wisconsin. 0 Outdoor Report MIAMI (AP) San Diego kicker Rolf Benirschke, whose confidence hit rock bottom last weekend, said his concentration was so intense against the Miami Dolphins that he couldn't see potential disaster staring him in the face.

"Routine? No kick is routine after the week I had," Benirschke said Thursday night after booting a 28-yard field goal with 7:46 remaining in overtime to lift the Chargers to a 27-24 National Football League victory. Benirschke, who missed on three field goals tries and had another blocked in addition to missing an extra point in San Diego's 20-7 triumph over Kansas City last Sunday, said he was so determined to make good on the game-winning field goal attempt that he didn't see the snap from center bounce before it reached holder Mike Fuller. I was so tuned In and so confident that Mike would give me a good hold that 1 didn't know the ball bounced until we got in the locker room, the fourth-year kicker said. Linebacker Woodrow Lowe's interception of a David Woodley pass set up the game-winning kick. Lowe picked off the pass at the Miami 40-yard line and rambled down the right sideline to the Dolphins 12.

Three running plays netted two yards and Benirschke, who had kicked a 37-yard field goal in the second quarter, came on to end the seasons sixth overtime game. The victory moved the Chargers, DNR Board backs United Press International Members of the Department of Natural Resources Board are supporting the first wild turkey hunting season in Crawford and Vernon counties, planned for the spring of 1983. The Department of Natural Resources proposed a 1983 season on turkeys received from Missouri for ruffed grouse four years ago. DNR board chairman Daniel Flaherty of La Crosse said this week that the Legislature would have to act next year to allow a 1983 season. The board reviewed efforts to restore wild turkeys to southwestern counties and the hunting proposal.

Board member Clifford Messinger of Mequon said the board should at least endorse the plan in general. MS? MM3 I N.ilur,il Kimhikps Rock County The Rock Prairie goose flock is nearing 2,000 birds.
