A couple of weeks ago he won the State Fair tournament, and prior to that, he and brother John won the Stanford Invitational. John, a couple of years older than Dick, plays for San Jose State.

Last year he won the intercollegiate title. "Some people say Dick looks like he'll be a better golfer than John," Balsley said. "I don't know; I've never seen him play." But both of them want to become tournament pros, and they'll make good ones." LOTZ, WHO plays to a two handicap, will top the Bulldog squad in tournament experience. But Joseph, Ward and Freeman aren't what you would call green. Joseph and Ward are lettcrmen off the Bull' dogs' 1961 squad, which won the State championship and the conference title.

And Freeman, who tied for third in the State tournament in 1959, paced that CSIH team to the conference and State titles. Brigham is the Hillsdale High school lad who plays out of the Peninsula Golf and Country club. He was Peninsula league medalist, and a couple of years ago he reached the semifinals of the National Junior. Culligan is another one with plenty of tournament savvy. He makes all the local ones, and a couple of years ago, he teamed with Jimmy Wilbert to win the Green Hills Golf and Country club Green Tea Invitational.

it ie ic AS GOOD as they are, that cream of the crop is not necessarily the top of Balsley's golf ladder. They'll have to battle for positions with kids like Jeff Bell, son of California Golf club pro Art Bell; Bob Joseph, who has to be close to brother John; Craig Gage, son of Buriingame Country club pro Jack; Barry Cunningham, a teammate of John Gallagher out of Serra; Mike Jedin, who played on Burliniame High school's championship team; Mark Mortiz, Hillsdale High school; Jim Kuskie of South San Francisco and Jerry St. Dennis, a five handicapper, all the way from Seattle, Wash. BALSLEY'S task is to pick the five best out of that group for his team, because conference play is limited to a five man team. It's got to be a tough chore, though not a sorry one, and Balsley is just the man to do it.

In the last 12 years the Bulldogs have wen the conference title ten times. And in the last nine years they have won the State championship five times. If they don't make it 11 out of 13 and six out of eleven in '62, they should fire the coach. Balsley says so. Raiders Get (7): Scut.
