That's All It Takes Transbay World Series 'Thinkable' By JACK HANLEY THERE WAS no daring or originality in the pennant picks of the Nevada oddsmakers. Of course, there was no' surprise in that. The bookies go by the book, disdain daring and shun novel ideas. Percentages dictate the decisiions of the high rollers. Emotion is a No.

1 taboo with tfliem. It leads" their "No, No" list. Everybody loved the Mets tout nobody picked them last year. So what happened? Love triumphed. Now, it cannot be successfully argued that the Oak land A's or San Francisco Giants are loved on both sides of the bay.

It's true they have stirred' emotions' around the Golden Gate. But are they the kind of emotions capable of carrying teams to undreamed of heights? Tin: very thought of a transbay World Series in October is utterly fascinating. The more positive thinking pumped into the idea, the more intriguing it becomes. There is great merit in positive thinking. It can achieve remarkable goals.

HORACE Stoneham is a firm believer in the power Df positive thinking. The president of the Giants sent several of his players to, a positive thinking cram course during the winter and one of themKen. Henderson, was graduated summa cum laude. i Henderson, putting his hook learning into practice, led all the Giants in spring training. Henderson started the spring as substitute left fielder behind Jim Ray Hart.

Before the Giants began their 7,000 mile jaunt to Japan, Henderson had the left field job. By the time the Giants got back from Japan, Henderson not only was playing left field but right field and center, too. Furthermore, he was hitting .458. Charles 0. Finley, owner of the A's, didn't put his players through think school but he is a man receptive to ideas.

Indeed, he constantly is thinking up new ones. Finley would never downgrade the power of positive thinking. In fact, he once took a course in it himself and (Continued on Page 35) Giants' Radio Tomorrow's Giants Houston Astros, game from Candlestick Park will be aired over KSFO Radio (560) at ":55 p.m. A's Radio Tomorrow's. Jim Penrose Is Honored For Ms school record work against USC, California' Jim Penrose was named Athlete of the Week yesterday by the Northern California Track Writers. Penrose, a 6 4, 335 pound lad who prepper! at Caiimont High School, wan the discus with a lifctime Jicsl mark of 182 19 Saturday in Cal's 77 76 loss to the Trojans The mark set a new school record by more than two feet. That gave me acme added determination.

Penrose has goals of 195 feet and no worse than a fourth p.ace finish in the NCAA that mean you don't want to drive a car again? 1 Merle recites that logic like he has said it a hundred times. He probably has. It took some convincing by the Bettenhausen boys to get mom's approval. 'She" was against it at Merle said, 'but she realized' how much dad loved racing, that we grew up in the sport and that it's in our blood. As far back as I can remember, way back when we (kids) raced each other on bikes, I liked to race.

I couldn't wait until I was old enough to see if I could get the job UNTIL THIS YEAR, Merle had to wonder. I mean, he wasn't winning. But a trip to Australia had to lift his hopes. He competed in eleven feature" events and won five of them. Three of the five were considered 'world championship' races.

Actually, none of the world's top leadfoots were entered. But he wasn't doing a solo either. He beat somebody. Better than he had been doing. 'Merle doesn't pretend to belong in fast company like he ran against last Saturday.

Not yet. 'My goal is Indianapolis in he said. 'There are 15 or 20 other championship races I'd like to drive But Joe Leonard, a veteran of Indianapolis racing, suggested the kid is underestimating his talent. 'Gary is an aggressive driver. They tell me I look relaxed out there. I don't know about that; I've never seen myself drive. I like to win races, but if it's a case of busting my bucket or finishing second, I'd rather finish It's strange, the style difference, I mean, because I didn't know there was more than one way to drive a race car.
