Lyle Edward Prothero, 49, a truck driver, was gunned down in front of his house trailer Saturday. The Alameda County sheriffs office said Prothero served in the Bridgeport post in 1953 and had also been a patrolman with the Marysville, police department. The killer fired three shots from a .38 caliber pistol before fleeing.

Prothero was shot twice in the body and once in the head. A witness said he saw the killer w'alk up to Prothero as he arrived home from work. He said the two talked for a few seconds and then the killer pulled the gun and shot Prothero. Wallet Stolen While Owner Takes Shower A brazen burglar broke into a Salinas house early this morning and stole a wallet containing $76.96 from the trousers pocket of the owner of the house, who was taking a shower when the theft occurred. Victim of the burglary was Dane Smith of 22 Rincon St.

He said that he saw the burglar, a man dressed in light-colored clothes, fleeing from the house. The burglar apparently entered the house by raising an unlocked window in a back room, where Smiths trousers were. Father, Son Injured in Big Sur Fight Two persons, a father and son, were treated at the Monterey County Hospital early yesterday for injuries they said they received in a fight with some beatnicks near Big Sur. Injured were Herman E. Evans, 35, of 643 John who complained of a knee injury and two teeth knocked out, and his son, Ronald E. Evans, 15, who had a possible broken arm.

They said they had stopped their car near a creek, were hailed by the beatniks, went to their camp and later a fight resulted. The sheriffs office is investigating. San Joaquin Valley Crashes Claim Three FRESNO (UPI) Traffic accidents in San Joaqdin Valley during the weekend killed at least three persons. Ivan Evans Scott Jrl, 21, Kerman, was killed Sunday night when his northbound car ran off rural road near San Joaquin and overturned. A passenger, Roy Bullard, 17, Tranquility suffered minor injuries.

Thomas Treadway, 45, Orosi, died Saturday night when he lost control of his car while he was passing another vehicle and it crashed into a palm tree in Orosi. Franklin Delano Osborne, 28, Oilfield, was killed Friday night when his speeding car missed a hairpin curve on Stockdale Highway near Bakersfield and crashed in a field. Heavy Equipment Apprenticeships Being Offered The Califoma State Peronnel Board now is issuing applica tions for an Oct. 23 open competitive examination for heavy equipment mechanic apprentices with the Division of Highways, it was announced to day by Charles F. Hanna, chief of the Division of Apprentice' ship Standards, Department of Industrial Relations.

Hanna said applicants must be a resident of the state for at least one year, and must possess an education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
