Moire Dame shunts door to ByAL LESAR Tnbunefports Writer SOUTH BEND Jake Kelchner never did have much of a football career at Notre Dame. What little there was is over now. Kelchner became the second quarterback to leave the Irish program this summer.

According to his mother, Rae Ellen Earl, Kelchner was notified Monday that he would not be re-admitted to the university. He wasnt given the chance to go back to Notre Dame, Earl told Paul Sokoloski of the Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) Times Leader. He could re-apply next year, but According to three sources close to Kelchner, he intended to visit the University of West Virginia, which was high on his list of potential schools when he came out of Berwick, Pa. Hes already in at West Virginia," Earl told The Tribune Wednesday night. Of course hes very upset over this.

Were all JAKE KELCHNER Sox glad McDowell can the job CHICAGO (AP) Jack McDowell seems to know the secret to pitching a complete game. McDoweU allowed seven hits, struck out six and didnt give up a walk Wednesday night as the Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees 10-2. It was a major league-leading 10th complete game for McDoweU (14-6). He had four complete games last year and one in 1988. Its something I hadnt been able to do in my first three years, but now I seem to be able to throw as hard late in the game as in the beginning, like I did in college, said McDowell, who pitched Stanford to the College World Series title in 1987.

With Robin Ventura leading a 12-hit attack with a three RBIs on a pair of doubles and a single, the second-place White Sox closed to 2 games of the Minnesota Twins in the American League West The Twins dropped an 8-1 decision to California. Complete games are important because of the impact they have on the rest of the staff, White Sox manager Jeff Torborg said. What Jack has done for us is given us the ability to go with a 10-man pitching staff. McDowell was a different pitcher this time out than he was last Saturday night when he was knocked out early by Baltimore after playing guitar in a rock concert McDowell said the difference in his performance had nothing to do with playing the guitar. The difference was I didnt get anyone out last time, McDoweU said This time I had a better fast ball, better command and things went my way.

He had an 8-run lead before allowing the Yankees to score a run. McDowell called the concert that prompted a few negative stories a comical event that doesnt bother me at alL I cant do anything about what people believe. My teammates and friends know different. His teammates gave him plenty of support with an early attack Se CHISOX Pag B3 Hot ni BILL GLEASON CHICAGO -While the lightning off the magic bat of Robin Ventura illuminated Chicagos July, the thunder generated by Dan Pasqua was muffled. You know what Ventura did to make him the American.

Leagues player of the month for July. His statistics for those 31 days, just as a reminder: Batting average, .357. Home runs, 12. Runs batted in, 33. Two of his home runs meant victory for the White Sox at the very end of a game.

The most dramatic, the most memorable, was the ninth-inning, two-out grand slam on the last night of the month to beat Texas, 10-8. These were Pasquas numbers for July: Batting average, .330. On-base percentage, .440. Slugging percentage, .557. Overshadowed by Ventura and the other Big Bopper, Frank Thomas, Pasqua has been on a tear through opponents pitching staffs.

Dependable Dan, the quiet man, has hit safely in 16 of the last 21 Sox games, 27 of the last 35. Opponents cannot pitch around Ventura or Carlton Fisk or Thomas when Pasqua is batting behind one or the other. Tuesday night Mike Huff, a recent addition to the defense, had the biggest night of his career with three hits and four runs batted in. When that game, a 14-5 massacre of the New York Yankees, was over, Huff insisted on giving credit to Pasqua for the comeback from a five-run deficit. Danny hit a tough pitch to keep the rally alive in the fourth inning, Huff said It was a pitch that could have been a double-play balL But Pasqua got it through the infield to right field which gave me the opportunity to drive in two runs.

The left-hand hitting Pasqua, pla-tooned through most of his six-year major league career, is proving that he can hit left-handed pitching. Proving something he thought he could do. Going into what would be a 10-2 victory over the Yankees at Comis-key Park Wednesdajmight, Pasquas batting average-for the season was .272. Against left-handers he was hitting .261. Pasqua earned a chance to prove he can be an everyday player by proving something else.

He has proved much to the amazement of almost everybody, that he can play first base as well as either of the side outfield positions. Danny has given us a Gold Glove performance at first base, manager Jeff Torborg said exaggerating only slightly. Pasqua is a nice man, a modest man, the kind of player everybody roots for. Until about midway through last season, Dan had only one enemy. Himself.

He tried to do too much because so much had been expected of him. He was the New York-born phenom signed by his hometown team, the Yankees. He played high school and college ball across the way in New Jersey, and to this day the mere mention of his name will start a lively discussion among New York writers who were covering the Yankees when he broke in. For a pro athlete there is no pressure like hometown pressure. He was the left-handed slugger who would hit soaring drives into the stands built for Babe Ruth.

When the home runs didnt come in big numbers, Dan was gone to the Sox. In his first season here, 1988, he still was agonizing over every strikeout, every double-play grounder, every popup. One night in the dugout, I told him he couldnt go on fighting himself. Observe Ron Kittle, I suggested. Kittle strikes out more than almost anybody, I pointed out But when he does he pats the top of his helmet tucks the bat under an arm, stares briefly at the pitcher, and walks back to the dugout Pasqua, for the last year, seems to be taking a philosophical approach to an aggravating game.

He is at peace with himself as a player. He may never hit .300, but at age 29 he is on the brink of being the player he was expected to be. The White Sox and Sox fans are lucky to have him. He is the Thunder on the Left upset. But in this situation he had to move fast." Kelchner was unavailable for comment After choosing Notre Dame, Kelchner spent on the bench with Rick Mirer as they both watched Tony Rice complete his senior season.

That spring, Mirer and Kelchner waged a fierce battle for No.l. Though Mirer had already gained an edge, a shoulder injury in the Blue-Gold Game hampered his progress. A little later, it was learned that Kelchner had academic difficulties and was excused from the university for the year. Kelchner spent that year at Holy Cross junior college and had improved his academic standing. This summer, he appeared to be on track to reach the academic criteria placed on him by the university when he was arrested on driving under the influence charges two weeks ago.

Those charges were dropped when Kelchner pleaded guilty to a reckless driving to the plate on the way to his 10th complete manager Tommy Thompson tries to make 2 loss to Kane County Wednesday night. 1 charge. He was ordered to pay a fine, Knowing how strict Notre Dame was, we didnt know what would happen (after the driving incident), Earl said. Even though he wasnt charged with driving under the influence, they (Notre Dame) treated it as such. Grades werent the issue, the charge was.

Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz could not be reached for comment. That leaves only untested Kevin McDou-gal, walkon Matt Johnson and freshman Paul Failla as the only Irish quarterbacks behind Mirer. SANDRI GONE: Winston Sandri, counted on to be a versatile part of Notre Dames offensive line, will not play this season. Sandri, who has already graduated, was not granted a fifth year of eligibility by the university. He participated in spring practice.

Though he faded to crack the first unit, Sandris value came from his ability to fill in at any position. Gallery favorite? Zoeller By JOHN FINERAN Assistant Sports Editor CARMEL, Ind. Another heads-up play probably cost South Bend the game as far as White Sox manager Tommy Thompson is concerned.

Kane County survived a South Bend White Sox rally in the bottom of the ninth to hold on for a 3-2 minor-league baseball triumph Wednesday night A crowd of 5,153, second largest of the season, witnessed the antics of the famous Chicken and one whale of a game. Kane County used a two-base throwing error by Sox third base-man Keith Strange, a wild pitch, and a bloop run-scoring single by Steve Godin for an unearned run in the top of the ninth. South Bend battled back against the 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the ninth. Dan Monzon hammered a double off the leftfield walL Finch-hitter Charles Poe struck out and Kevin Coughlin walked.
