Aluminum bats were precious metaL The players were not only the stars on their team, but often they were the top players in their coherence, or even the state. But heady days of glory in high school and college give way to the tough realities of pro baseball.

South Bend White Sox second baseman Dan Monzon is one of those players who is finding out that pro baseball can be far from ones expectations. Originally, I thought that I had earned a spot as a starter, said Monzon. But I started slow and then I missed two weeks with the chicken pox. I raised my (batting) average a bit, but they brought up another second baseman (Julio Foster) and I was told he was supposed to play every day. Dealing with setbacks, when youre only used to success, is probably the toughest lesson for a minor-leaguer to learn.

I was disappointed," said Mon-zoa "A lot of things run through your mind. I didnt know where I stood in the organizatioa I thought maybe they didnt think I could play everyday. Right now. Im platooning. Ive been playing second and third some.

Monzon said that the tests he faces means he must keep faith in the Sox organization, and in himself. The attitude you have to take is that you have to be positive and not get down on the organization or yourself, Monzon said. I know I can play. Ive never doubted my ability. You cant get too high or too low. Monzon, a native of the Bronx who starred at Pace College, displays a maturity that will help him weather the storm. He even sees a silver lining in what has been a cloudy season. Monzon feels that playing several different positions will make him versatile and thus more valuable tp the organization.

Ive played a lot of different positions, Monzon said. I played outfield in (short-season) Utica last season, and I played third and shortstop in college, and Im playing mostly second here. If youre called upon to play another position and you can do it, thats a plus. Monzon has another plus in his corner. His father, Danny Monzon, is a former major-leaguer who is a scout with the White Sox.

Yes, his father is a scout with the Sox but Dan Monzon has earned his way here, said Sox manager Tommy Thompson. Hesliere because of what he can do, riot because of his father. The younger Monzon never felt pressured to live up to other peoples expectations because of his family connections. I never felt I had to prove anything, said Monzon. I always go out and give 100 percent.

My father helps me out because he knows the game. But my dad never pushed me in any direction. Baseball was my choice. I. Emerson Fittipaldi, Brazil Penske-Cbevrolet, 130615 (breaks track qualifying record of 139311 set in 1600 by tuck Mears).

JOE DOYLE ACCORDING TO DOYLE Rick Mirer of Notre Dame is pictured on the cover of what is billed as the first NCAA Football Preview. But the junior Irish quarterback is rated only ninth in an inside story on 1991 prospects. For what its worth, Houstons David Klingler is rated the top quarterback. And also for what its worth, this isnt the first NCAA Preview publication. There was an earlier one about a dozen years ago.

Putting a Notre Dame player on the cover helps the sale considerably, as preview magazine editors discovered long ago. Rick is only about No. 12 in a long list of Irish quarterbacks so displayed. And the cover boy previews date only to the 1940s. In a position-by-position summary, three other Notre Dame players tight end Derek Brown, fullback Jerome Bettis and guard Mirko Jurkovic are rated higher.

Brown and Bettis are No. 1 and Jurkovic No. 2. Getting picked No. 1 in the preseason isnt always the kiss of death.

But because the previews No. 1 team, Florida State, plays four Top 20 teams, it might be difficult for Coach Bobby Bowden to finish first at seasons end. This magazines Top 10: 1. Florida State; 2. Miami; 3.

Michigan; 4. Notre Dame; 5. Washington; 6. Penn State; 7. Colorado; 8.

Georgia Tech; 9. Tennessee: 10. Texas. The rest of the Top 20 teams; 11. Clemson; 12.

Florida; 13. Oklahoma; 14. Nebraska; 13. Auburn; 16. Southern Cal; 17.

Texas 18. Houston; 19. Brigham Young; 20. Alabama. Notre Dame plays four in the Top 20 Michigan, Penn State, Tennessee and Southern CaL Florida State also plays four Miami, Michigan, Florida and Brigham Young.

Miami plays three Houston, Penn State and Florida State and Michigan plays two Notre Dame and Flonda State. No. 3 pick Washington plays only Nebraska and Southern Cal out of the top 20, one reason that some other preview pieces are giving the Huskies the chance to be the first Pac-10 team to finish No. 1 since USC in 1972 or 1974, depending on what wire service poll you use. Magazine editors and writers are not always in agreement.

The Quest for No. 1" story picks the Irish fourth, but another one rates N.D. as only the third independent behind Florida State and Penn State. The defensive assessment of top 10 players ought to make Irish coordinator Gary Darnell happy. Not one N.D.

player is rated in the top 10 of linemen, linebackers, comerbacks or safeties. The Irish are unheralded on defense and that might mean great teamwork. Kicker Craig Hentrich is placed fifth among kickers, and in an award assessment, Mirer is 10th among Heisman contenders and Jurkovic 10th for the Outland. Now if you believe all the things you read in the previews, there won't be much to look forward to this season. Funny, though, but Irish ticket sales are soaring, and Indiana (picked no better than fifth in the Big Ten) will be in South Bend exactly nine weeks from this afternoon.

Chances are the weather will be just as warm Sept 7 as it has been the last week or two. But maybe that isnt all bad. Billy Sullivan, the former New England Patriots owner, was in town this week for brother-in-law Joe McArdle's funeral. And Billy remembered a hot weather tale from 50 years ago. I came out here in 1941 with Frank Leahy and his staff, remembered Sullivan.

"And one of my duties that first year was to call the weather bureau to learn what the temperature would be for practice. So each day, I would follow Frank's suggestion to call the Chicago weather bureau. I thought that was kind of funny, so I asked Frank, Why do you want me to call Chicago for the weather? They have a weatherman right here in South Bend and its not a long distance can. Frank glared at me and said, Yes, but the South Bend weatherman is from Michigan. And you cant trust anyone from Ann Arbor." And why did Frank want to know the time or the beat of the day? Simple.

Thats when he wanted to practice. He explained, "You know, lads, itH be hot on Satur- aay' Kroger results MASON, Ohio (AP) Scores Friday after the first round of the 1800,000 Kroger Senior Classic, played on the Par 36 3571 Gnzly Course at the Jack Nicklaus Sports Center: Terry Dill 3630-88 Dudley Wysong 363286 Dale Douglass 32-3466 A1 Geiberger 363388 Larry Laoretti 363387 Dewitt Weaver 34-3488 Bobby Nichols 363488 Harold Henning 37-31-88 George Archer 363288 Bob Charles 3632-88 Clu Chi Rodrigues 3632-88 Lee Trevino 363488 Dick Rhyan 3633-86 Babe Hiskey 3635-66 Glbby Gilbert 35 34-66 Doug Dalziel 35-3570 Bob Erickson 3634-70 Dick Hendrickson 363770 Phil Rodgers 3636-70 Charles Owen 363770 Mike Hill 3634-70 Rocky Thompson 37-3370 Jun Dent 383270 Jesus Rodrigues 37-3471 John Brodie 37-3471 Jim OHern 37-34-71 Bob Brue 37-3471 Charles Coody 37-3471 Don January 37-3471 Don Massengale 363571 Miller Barber 37 34-71 Homero Blancas 363071 Jack Nicklaus 37-3471 Bob Reith 3537-72 Wayne Kelley 363872 Jack Kiefer 363772 Martin Roesink 34-3872 Simon Hobday 363872 35-3772 4632-72 363872 363372 363872 Doug Sanders 363772 Lee Elder 37 35-72 Gene Lltller 383472 Walter Zembrukl 363872 Gary Cowan 363773 Jack Fleck 3835-73 C.Snead 37-38-73 BobGoalby 3836-73 Jimmy Powell 383573 Women' results Morris Park Flight D. Andrews, who entered the game as a defensive replacement, made up for a couple of mistakes with the home run. He misjudged a play in the eighth inning, allowing a fly ball hit by Horace Gaither to fall for a run-scoring single and give South Bend a 3-2 lead. Andrews was also the final out in the 11-10 victory South Bend posted Thursday night, stranding the potential tying-run at first base in the process.

Don Perigny was charged with the loss, spoiling a strong outing by starter Steve Olsen. Perigny entered the game with two on and one out in the bottom of the eighth, retired the first four men he faced before surrendering Andrews home run. Olsen limited the Foxes to an infield hit over the first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. Darren Burton cashed in on the opportunity, slapping a two-run single with two out to lift Appleton into a 2-2 deadlock. Mike Robertson gave South Bend that early 2-0 lead, ripping an RBI-single off the fence in the third inning and scoring after a wild pitch in the top of the sixth.

Olsen hit Gary Caraballo with a pitch to Ignite a controversial moment in the seventh. Caraballo moved toward the mound after being hit but was restrained by pate umpire Jerry Schmitt South Bend manager Tommy Thompson filed a protest over the play when Caraballo was not removed from the game. The White Sox broke the 2-2 deadlock in the eighth. Greg McGough, who finished with three hits in four trips, rapped a double to open the threat. Pinch-runner Don Sheppard scored one out later when Gaithers fly ball to left fell for a single.
