(next to El Key Theatre) Downtown Salinas Phone HA 2-9363 There is no such thing as sweet sorrow for the card playing cheater who parts a fool from his money during a friendly game with the boys. According to Jack Webb, who spent 12 years probing police bunco squad cases during his Dragnet radio and TV shows, the crime files are filled with accounts of the slick tricks employed by callous card sharps, all painstakingly designed to separate the unwary poker player from next months rent money. And these sharpies are constantly adding new wrinkles to their act, Webb assures. One such ingenious scheme is revealed by Webb on next Sundays (Dec. 2) General Electric True program on CBS-TV called Cheating Cheaters.

In the dramatization of this factual account, youll see actor Jack Hogan portraying the real-life card playing expert called aboard a luxury cruise ship when a passenger committed suicide after losing heavily in a shipboard poker session. But when the camera moves in to film the card playing scenes, the hands youll see deftly manipulating the pasteboards will be those of a Hollywood slight-of-hand professional named Bill Chaodet. Chaudet makes his living with a magic act and as a performer exposing the tricks of card cheats, pickpockets and other shifty characters. Hes often called to serve as technical advisor on movie scenes, a function he performed on the G. E.

True episode, as well as lending his quick hands to the close-up scenes. According to Chaudet, card cheats principally operate with three methods: The Markers these cool customers alter the surface or edges of the pasteboards to give the cheat a braille system of identification while dealing. The Peekers nimble fingered cheats who prove the eye can be as quick as the hand, giving them an undetectable fleeting glimpse of a card long before it is slid off the top (or bottom) of a deck. The Mechanics the masters- of the cheating craft, these slickers are deft enough to control the appearance of any card in the deck at any given time, with a winning hand usually aimed in their own direction. Marking the deck is the least practiced among this unholy threesome, says Chaudet, since there is a possibility of detection and it leaves the evidence of cheating on the table.

However, the cheaters in Sundays G. E. True episode introduce an amazing marking treatment to the deck that insures their winning ways. Chaudet has some fundamental tips to guide the Saturday night poker fan and what to be on the lookout for if the guy across the table seems to be raking in more chips than a run of luck allows: 1. Know the players.

It may be a friendly game, but if theres a new acquaintance taking a hand, he may not be so friendly. 2. As when driving, dont mix drinking with poker playing. 3. Keep three or four decks rotating in play it slows down a marker considerably 4.

Cut the cards carefully and thoroughly. 5. Take a long, hard look at the dealers hand holding the deck, thats where the hanky panky takes place. 6. If a players luck is bad on modest bets, but turns suddenly when the pot is heavy and his hands consistently manage to win by a small margin RUN, dont walk, for the nearest exit 0n channel 5 tomorrow at 9:30 p.m..
