It was another frustrating finish for the Cubs, who have lost seven of their last eight. Six of those losses have been by a total of nine runs.

Thats just about the way it's been this whole trip," manager Don Zimmer said after the Cubs fell to 2-7 on the road. One blow could have taken care of a lot of things. You cant ask for much better pitching than to hold this club to three runs. But we got just one. The Cubs got a lot more to worry about when starter Mike Harkey (0-2) had to leave the game after three innings with a sore shoulder.

The injury was diagnosed as a strain, but the Cubs are worried it could be a long-term problem. Harkey was sidelined twice last year by tendinitis in the right shoulder, and was bothered by soreness this spring. Hes scheduled to have tests Monday in Chicago to find out whether theres anything seriously wrong. Cardinals 4, Expos 0: Bryn Smith pitched seven shutout innings as the host St. Louis Cardinals beat Montreal, extending the Expos' losing streak to six games and their scoreless streak to 26 innings.

Felix Jose singled twice, doubled and tripled for a career-high four hits and rookie Bernard Gilkey hit his first home run of the season. Smith (3-0) allowed five hits, struck out four and walked none. Mats 2, Pirate 0: Frank Viola pitched 8ijj shutout innings to out-duel New York nemesis Zane Smith as the host Mets beat Pittsburgh, ending the Pirates six-game winning streak. The two clubs are back at it again in 1991 and are tied for first MATIOMAL LEAGUE strong innings as the Cincinnati Reds beat the slumping Chicago Cubs 3-1.

Rijo (1-1) allowed just two hits over the first eight innings, facing 25 batters two over the limit during that span. He yielded to the Nasty Boys" bullpen after getting two outs and giving up a pair of singles in the ninth. Considering what he had to work with, Rijo was ecstatic In the first three innings, I felt like (Cleveland knuckleballer) Tom Candiotti, Rijo said. "My fastball was moving with no velocity. I had nothing.

Later in the game, it came back. And it felt great. It felt something like Game 4 of the World Senes, when Rijo didnt get a chance to finish off Oakland. He yielded to Randy Myers that time, and the left-hander got the last two outs to complete the Series sweep. As he did in Oakland, Rijo walked off the mound Friday night with head bowed, disappointed he couldnt get the last out.

I just couldnt finish it, he said. But again, you look at the bullpen and see Randy Myers and you say, Get me out of here. Myers soon joined Rijo on the bench. The thing we try to teach is keep the bat through the zone as long as you can. If your head moves, you pull off the ball. We really drill the kids on keeping the head straight hard. Don Sheppard highlighted the Sox defense when he made a tough running catch on a ball hit to centerfield by Clinton's Matt Davis. Don has been having some trouble at the plate, but I'll tell you what, that was a major-league catch, said Thompson.

He not only saved a run, he kept them from having a big inning. Also, Eatmger's family has asked that fans send cards of encouragement to him at 22938 Palm Tree Grand Terrace, Calif.

Eatinger knows it will take all of his strength to keep a positive attitude. He knows the prognosis is not encouraging. "It really stinks, Eatinger said. I wake up one day and feel super. I feel like I could play ball But I cant.

I dont have any energy. I jump up three or four times and I'm tired Fortunately, Eatinger has had support from his family and the White Sox. My family has been great, theyve really helped me through this, Eatinger said And the Sox have backed me 100 percent They put me on the disabled list so I still get a paycheck. That helps a lot. Eatinger appreciates the concern the Sox have shown.

It makes me feel good that people care, Eatinger said I wondered if I'd be forgotten. He was diagnosed with large-cell, non Hodgkins lymphoma. Further tests revealed affected lymph nodes in the spine and stomach lining, which explained his back pain and stomachaches.

The toughest thing was to tell the guys on the team, Eatinger said. New York Mets manager Bud Harrelson has decided to drop his pregame radio show because he thought the tone was too negative.

For the last few days, however, players and coaches have filled in with host Howie Rose. Harrelson said Friday he was becoming increasingly uncomfortable doing the show. I thought it should have been more positive, more promotion of my ballclub, Harrelson said. The fans hear the bad stuff on TV and read about it in the newspapers.

Harrelson took over the show last May when Davey Johnson was fired as manager. Johnson started the program in 1987. Recently, Rose and callers on the postgame show questioned having Dwight Gooden throw 150 pitches in a game in the rain against Montreal two weeks Im not Sam Donaldson or Mike Wallace, said.
