The Daily News, Lebanon, Friday, December 21, 1990 "1 i AT A GLANCE Shamrock defense shuts down Cougar attack only outscored the Vikings 17-12 and Impact adds Todd Smith HERSHEY Former Cumberland Valley High School standout Todd Smith has joined the nersney impaci. rr "v'jklx The Impact an-:" V. By JEFF FALK Daily News Sportswriter The Palmyra girls basketball team had used a stifling defense to build an early 6-0 record. But on Thursday night the Cougars were out-defensed by long-time rival Trinity. The Shamrocks held Palmyra to five points in the first half and cruised to a 44-25 win in an early Mid-Penn Conference Division One showdown last night.

The loss was Palmyra's first of the season and dropped it to 2-1 in the league. Trinity is 3-0 in Division One and 5-2 overall. While Trinity was only giving up five points in the first two periods it was scoring 20 to build a 15-point halftime bulge. Palmyra couldn't take anything off the Shamrock lead in the second half and actually ended up being outscored in each of the four quarters. Trinity's Amy Walker was the only scorer for either team to hit double figures and finished with ten points.

Tanya Belair led the Cougars with nine points, as Palmyra scored only four field goals in the entire game. In non-league action on Thursday night, Pine Grove stayed unbeaten with a 65-36 win at Lebanon. The Cedars are still searching for their first win and are now 0-6. Lebanon actually led the mighty Cardinals (4-0) 13-12 after one period, but after that it was all Pine Grove. The Cards went on a 16-1 tear through the second period to assume a 28-14 halftime lead and then proceeded to outscore the Cedars 37-22 in the second half to win going away.

Pine Grove's terrific trio of Adi Schneck, Neda Gholson and Bobbie Loy accounted for 24, 11 and ten points respectively. Jen Bartal led Lebanon with 20 counters. And Annville-Cleona got 23 points from Michelle Kulbitsky on its way to a 55-46 non-league win over Manheim Central. The improving Little Dutchmen are now 3-4 on the year, while the Barons fall to 2-5. A-C's big period was the second when it outscored MC 14-8 to take a 32-23 lead to the lockerroom.

The Little Dutchmen stretched their advantage to 46-35 by the beginning of the fourth quarter. Elsewhere, in a game of teams heading in opposite directions, Warwick stayed unbeaten by stomping Northern Lebanon 76-45 in a non-league contest in Fredericksburg. The Warriors are 6-0 and the Vikings are 1-5. The Warriors blew open a relatively close game with a 24-6 third quarter. Before that, Warwick had 18-13 in the tirst two penoas oi piay.

Krista Carvell had 14 points to pace the winners and teammate Heidi Sommers contributed 12. Northern Lebanon's leading scorer Pam Ollar tallied 14 points. And finally, at Blue Mountain, Elco was done in by a two-point se- cond quarter and fell to Blue Mountain 61-34. Blue Mountain went on a 12-2 rampage during the second period to increase its 21-9 first-period lead to 33-11 by halftime. Kori Heiser and Julie Ogurcaks.

Kraft had one assist in his first two games with the Impact this season. Smith will dress for tonight's game in Illinois as the 2-6 Impact attempts to break a five-game losing streak.

Owens played all 40 minutes, moving outside for part of the game after guard Michael Edwards left with a severe ankle sprain. Team officials said Edwards was treated at a nearby hospital and is expected to miss several games. Without Edwards, Syracuse turned the ball over 18 times and allowed the Tigers (3-4) to stay close. Truax praised his undersized squad for not quitting and said Lightening played well at both ends of the floor. Lightening, a 6-foot-5 junior, finished with 29 points.

Despite the slow start, Syracuse continued to go to Owens. He responded with several clutch baskets, including an eight-foot jumper that put Syracuse ahead to stay with just over 14 minutes left in the game. Owens said he was able to stay focused, despite a newspaper report alleging that he other present and former players received money or merchandise from Syracuse backers. Before the game, Owens denied the published allegation that he received $500 from former teammate Derrick Coleman. After the game, he said, "I'm out here to play basketball.

I'll let that other stuff take care of itself." HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) The last time Billy Owens played basketball in the Hersheypark Arena, he couldn't seem to miss. The year was 1988, and Owens scored 53 points to lead Carlisle High School to a state championship. For a while Thursday night, the magic seemed to have disappeared for Owens, now a junior at Syracuse. Owens missed his first three shots and unheralded Towson State jumped to a quick 6-point lead over the third-ranked Orange.

But with friends and relatives from nearby Carlisle in the stands, Owens got his game together, leading Syracuse to a 78-73 victory. The 6-foot-10 forward topped both teams with 16 rebounds and 30 points, including a crucial short jump shot that put Syracuse up by 4 points with less than a minute to play. After Towson State forward Chuck Lightening converted a three-point play and Devin Boyd added a basket after a steal to trim Syracuse's lead to 2, Owens called for the ball in the middle. He got it and lost it, but grabbed it back for an open 10-foot shot. After the game, Towson State coach Terry Truax said Owens may be the best player in college basketball this season.

Owens denied receiving money from Coleman.

After the 78-73 victory over Towson State, coach Jim Boeheim refused to comment on the allegations. The university said Thursday it will review the Post-Standard's allegations, which were based on a seven-month investigation, and consult with the NCAA to determine what action is necessary. The alleged violations included players receiving free merchandise and meals, getting cut-rate use of cars and even cash from boosters, including NBA Hall of Famer Dave Bing, who played collegiately at Syracuse as a teammate of Boeheim. Among the most serious allegations raised in the newspaper's seven-month investigation was former player Rodney Walker said one of his grades were changed so he could remain academic eligibility for an important Big East Conference contest in 1987, the season Syracuse went to the NCAA championship game. The Syracuse basketball program has been nationally ranked continuously since March 5, 1984, and is one of only 10 Division I schools with more than 1,300 victories.

It has never been punished for violating NCAA regulations. 1 SYRACUSE, N. Y. (AP) -Syracuse's LeRon Ellis thought he was leaving trouble behind when he left Kentucky after the Wildcats were caught violating NCAA rules. Ellis isn't worried that trouble has found him again following a report by the Syracuse Post-Standard that No.

3 Syracuse may have broken dozens of NCAA regulations in recent years. "I don't think anything major is going to come of it," Ellis predicted Thursday before the Orangemen's game against Towson State at Her-shey Park Arena in Pennsylvania. "They (NCAA) are going to look at them (allegations), and see that they're minor, if any. It's a pretty clean, a very clean program, actually. That's why I came here.

There was no real risk of trouble," said Ellis, a senior who left Kentucky after that program was placed on three years' probation for major violations, meaning the forward could transfer without having to sit out a year. Meanwhile, Syracuse forward Billy Owens cried foul. The newspaper said Owens received $500 from former teammate Derrick Coleman, who signed a $15 million contract with the New Jersey Nets as the NBA's top pick. "I see no reason why they should do something like this. I guess they wanted to hurt the program," Owens said.

Bojanic also anchored the sprint relay, joining Lynelle Bronstein, Sara Blanchard and Shawn Krum-bine on that winning team, the only relay event won by the Falcons. Also winning for the Falcons were Blanchard in the 100 free and Bronstein in the 100 backstroke. The loss left the Falcons girls with a 2-2 record. Unbeaten in their first three meets, the Cedar Crest Falcons were rather rudely brought back down to earth Thursday when they ran into the Wilson Bulldogs. Winning eight of the 12 events, the Bulldogs posted a 102-83 victory over the Falcons in boys' scholastic swimming action, boosting their record to 4-0 on the season while the Falcons dropped to 3-1.

In the girls' meet, Wilson scored a 112-73 victory over Cedar Crest. Eric Stoffer and Mark Fox highlighted the Falcon effort, each winning one individual event, coming in second in another, and teaming up with Dave Bennetch and Dan Geier to win the 200 freestyle relay. Stoffer won the 100 butterfly and finished second in the 200 free while Fox won the 100 breaststroke and was second in the 50 free. Cedar Crest's only other individual winner was diver Mike Reda.
