He had been having trouble with coyotes attacking his animals. He grabbed his gun and went outside. He was attacked by a dog and he fired off two shots. During a career that has generated 37 gold, platinum and multiplatinum records, a Grammy Award and 12 other Grammy Award nominations, Mellencamp often has used his music to offer comment on social issues and to pioneer new musical frontiers.

Others who will be presented with honorary degrees at the Bloomington ceremony are Thomas M. Lofton, an attorney and vice chancellor of Lilly Endowment, doctor of laws; Williarti G. Mays, founder of Mays Chemical Co. and publisher of the Indianapolis Recorder, doctor of science; and Flerida Ruth Romero, retired senior associate justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, doctor of laws.
