Box 1643, Salinas, California. 424-9874. Situations Wanted 19 car, shot once in the chest and once in the groin. Within an hour, the body of Hewitt Austin, about 35, a hospital employe, was found lying on a sidewalk. He had been shot in the head, police said.

Police said the bodies were found less than an hour apart, and had no motive for the slayings. The slayings appeared similar to three murders on city streets in Berkeley and Oakland last fall. James Larson, 20, was found shot to death Nov. 10, 1970 oi an Oakland street and a half hour later Griswold Wilson, 55, was found fatally shot on a Berkeley street. On Oct.

27, 1970, Norman R. Wagner was shot to death while walking along a Berkeley street. At the time, a Berkeley police lieutenant said there was a strong possibility that all three shootings were connect-1 ed. SAN QUENTIN (UPI) Mack Ray Edwards, 52, confessed killer of six Los Angeles area children, pleaded for the gas chamber during his murder trial. His death wish finally has been lealized.

Officials at San Quentin said during the weekend that Edwards committed suicide in his Death Row cell by hanging himself with a television cord. His body was found Friday night during a routine check. Edwards, a heavy equipment operator, had tried suicide two other times in attempts to execute a verdict of death he sought and finally received May 22, 1970, in Van N'uys Superior Court. A jury sentenced him to death that day for the murders of Stella Nolan, 8, Compton, who disappeared June 20, 1953; Donald Todd, 13, Pacoima, who was reported missing May 16, 1969; and Gary Rochet, 16, Granada Hills, who was shot to death Nov. 26, 196S.

Edwards confessed to three other killings but he never was charged with them officially because the bodies never were found. The other victims, Edwards said, were Don Baker, 13, Azusa, who disappeared Aug. 6, 1956; Brenda Howell, 11, a companion of Baker who was with him that same day; and Roger Madison, 16, Sylmar, who was reported missing Dec. 16, 1968. Edwards, who neighbors described to police as a pleasant, nice guy, told authorities he abducted the children to molest them sexually- All murders remained a mystery until Edwards, married and the father of two, turned himself in to police.

He surrendered last year, authorities said, after an abortive attempt to kidnap three sisters, ages 12, 13, and 14. The girls later were found safe and Edwards, with tears in his eyes according to police, told of the six murders over a 17-year period. When his trial began, Edwards told the judge, I dont need a lawyer. I am guilty. Therefore I plead guilty.

But he was given an attorney and during the penalty phase of the trial the lawyer argued against the death penalty, which came anyway. After the death verdict, Edwards sat calmly in a holding cell and said, my attorney got a bit mixed up and pleaded for my life. NOW!
