Paralysis Takes Prominent Athlete SAN FRANCISCO Ward Edmonds, 22, one of the greatest track and field athletes in the United States, died here yesterday in Stanford hospital, a victim of paralysis. Known as the "Iron Man" because of his great feats as a pole vaulter and a hurdler while at Stanford University, Edmonds succumbed after an illness of only a few days. He was graduated from Stanford two years ago, and was employed by the Bank of Italy in San Francisco, learning the business in which his father, well known in the southern part of the state, is a leading figure.
