(AP Wirephoto) Man Who Knew Oswald Apparently Takes Own Life PALM BEACH, Fla! (AP) A tape recorder being used to transcribe a television program recorded the gunshot when a friend of Lee Harvey Oswald killed himself, authorities say. "We have the gunshot on tape," said Lt. Richard Sheets of the Palm Beach County sheriff's office. Sheets said there were no sounds of anyone else in the background as George de Mohrenschildt died.

Sheets said that by comparing the tape with television station logs investigators determined that de Mohrenschildt, 65, shot himself at 15 seconds past 2:21 p.m. Tuesday. The Palm Beach County medical examiner said Wednesday that an autopsy showed the fatal wound was "conducive to that of a self-inflicted gunshot." Sheets said his office would review the autopsy before deciding whether to close the case. But he said "something big would have to jump out of the woodwork" to change the theory that the death was suicide. De Mohrenschildt, a Dallas geologist who also taught French at Bishop College, shot himself after an investigator for the House Assassinations Committee tried to interview him, officials said.

De Mohrenschildt had known Lee Harvey Oswald and his wife, Marina. Sheets said that at noon Tuesday committee investigator Gaeton Fonzi went to the home of de Mohrenschildt's sister-in- law, Mrs. Charles Tilton III, where de Mohrenschildt was staying but he wasn't there. De Mohrenschildt's body was found by his daughter, Alexandra, 33, several hours later. He had been shot in the head and a 20-gauge shotgun lay nearby, Sheets said.

He said there was no suicide note. "At the time of the shooting, he was alone in the house except for two maids who said they did not hear the shot," Sheets said. Dutch journalist Willem 01- tmans, interviewed by assassination committee investigators, has quoted the Russian-born de Mohrenschildt as saying that he felt some responsibility for Kennedy's slaying, apparently because he had an indication of Oswald McLeod To Discuss Indian Claims ROCK HILL (AP)Atty. R. McLeod icld a closed discussion with York County attorneys over whether Catawba Indians are mtitled to 144,000 acres.

McLeod said afterward, "It is nappropriate for public discussion at this time." The Catawbas contend a transaction in the early 19th Century that gave 225 square miles of York and Lancaster to the state was illegal Because it was not approved by Congress. The territory in- cludes Rock Hill, Fort Mill and half of the Carowinds theme park. McLeod has been researching the situation in the wake of Indian leaders' statements that they may have legal title to the land. The attorney general did say to use the word "claim" to describe the Indian position is inaccurate. He said the discussions involve their potential rights, that the Catawbas have not laid a formal claim to the land.

(U.S. Phone 593-3048 Journalists Want Ruling Overturned COLUMBIA (AP)-A group of South Carolina journalists are trying again to overturn a federal judge's order they say restricts coverage of a pending trial.

The Central South Carolina Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi. asked Wednesday for an order keeping District Judge J. Robert Martin from enforcing an order he issued almost a year ago. The order was issued shortly after a state senator was charged with misusing federal funds. J.

Ralph Casque of Marion, since defeated in a bid for reelection, is scheduled to be tried in May the charges. Martin's order was upheld by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals early this year. It says attorneys, court officials and witnesses in the Gasque case may not talk or "mingle" with newsmen. It bars courtroom sketching or out of court photographing of jurors.

Lowe Credit Terms Charleston Is Hosting Oil Hearings CHARLESTON (AP)O i a i conservationists, government officials and business representatives are scheduled to testify today and Friday in Charleston in public hearings on the sale of offshore oil leases off the coast of South Carolina. Gov. James B. Edwards is expected to lead off testimony in the hearings, which will be sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Similar hearings ended Tuesday in Savannah, Ga. The hearings will concern the possible lease of 225 tracts of underwater lands, totaling more than 1.2 million acres, located from 25 to 80 miles off the coasts of the Carolines, Georgia and Florida. The tracts were to be leased late next summer, but the leases are expected to be delayed. If the leases are sold on schedule, exploratory drilling could begin in the South Atlantic in 1978, and production possibly in 1982. The fields are expected to have a life of 25 years.
