Variety The Daily News, Lebanon, Pa. Friday, August 24, 1984 15 Ruben Blades, The King Of Salsa Considers Settling For Presidency aspirations, he answered I dont exclude any possibilities. Im not in the least bit afraid of a presidential candidacy. While thinking, perhaps, of his upcoming studies at Harvard, he noted that Im not foolish or arrogant enough to underestimate peoples intelligence. Theyre not going to elect me simply because I sing well.

Though he speaks English fluently, he prefers Spanish and stuck to it throughout the interview. Another step to increased popularity in the United States should be the inclusion of his romantic song Tu Carino Your Affection on the best-selling soundtrack for the break-dance movie Beat Street. For the record in English he said he plans to change his name to Panama Blades and rename his sextet The Gamboa Road Gang, after the title of a popular Panamanian novel about injustice and racism in the 10-mile-wide strip of land on the banks of the Panama Canal that used to be controlled by the United States. The fact that Blades is considering a career in politics should come as no surprise to any who have listened to the biting lyrics of his urban songs of protest.

He attributed much of his passion for politics to the education he says he received while growing up on the steamy and sometimes mean streets of Panama City. The popular education I received from my friends on the street gave me a series of values which, though they come from the street, were always very honest and very practical, he said. It gave me a clarity for the perception of life that Ill never abandon and which I share, for example, with Gabriel Garcia Marqeuz. Blades latest album "Buscando America Searching for America features songs with subjects ranging from the assassination of Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, the tribulations of undocumented workers and a haunting, reggae-inspired tribute to Los De-saparecidos The Disappeared. In the title cut, Blades reflects on the political injustice and petty dictators he said have kidnapped America and left it bound and gagged.

The song calls on everyone to break the chain, warning that while theres no justice, well never have peace. Blades is angry that some of his songs have led people to call him a communist. Whenever theres someone in Latin America today who speaks out against a situation thats popularly or nationally injust, they immediately hang that sign on him, he said. Blades called himself a humanist who believes there are positive things in both capitalism and communism. The military has been the dominant force for the last 16 years in Panama, and Blades said I do not support military dictatorships.

But he quickly adds that he believes the root of military dictatorships is in civilian irresponsibility. Blades said he plans to come home to Panama for good about ten years from now and, depending on the amount of support he finds, hell then decide whether to have a go at politics. Asked about possible presidential PANAMA CITY, Panama (AP) -Ruben Blades, the king of salsa music, is getting ready to abdicate to pursue a career in politics. One day, he says, he might just run for president of Panama. The dashing superstar of mainstream Latin music, who just turned 36, plans to put music on the back burner in the fall when he leaves New York, his home for the last ten years, to work on a masters degree in international law at Harvard.

Blades, with his Seis del Solar or Tenement Six band, has been working at a feverish pace to put the finishing touches on several projects, including his first album in English and a collaboration with Gabriel Garcia Marquez aimed at setting the Nobel Prize-winning authors short stories to song. The musician also has been busy globe-trotting on a concert tour that has included stopovers at the Cannes Film Festival, the Mor.treux International Jazz Festival and several Latin American countries. A record in English was Elektras idea, Blades explained in an interview during a brief trip home to Panama. The record company wanted to accelerate the process of international and national recognition (in the United States) by presenting me doing music in English. The language itself shouldnt be any problem for Blades, whose grandparents came to Panama from the English-speaking islands of the fTEMgLESH EXrL330FKfttB FRL SAT, SUN.

NEW YORK (AP) Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and even the un-sinkable Eubie Blake are done in by Shades of Harlem, a tepid musical revue that struggles to recreate the ambiance of the Cotton Club, that famed Harlem night spot. The show, which was unveiled Tuesday at off -Broadw ays Village Gate, doesnt suffer from a lack of good songs. Ellingtons Satin Doll, Miss Holidays God Bless The Child and a spritely Im Just Simply Full of Jazz, by Blake pop up to provide some pleasure. But director Mical Whitaker and Jeree Palmer, who is credited with creating the revue, have no clear idea of how to handle this terrific material. Satin Doll, for example, gets a Latin-flavored rendition by Ty Stephens, the most accomplished of the evenings three stars.

But it just doesnt work. Ms. Palmer provides a contorted rendition of That Old Black Magic and her version of God Bless the Child, proves that excess definitely is less. The third member of the trio, Branice McKenzie, is stuck with a lot of the inane patter that stitches the musical numbers together, but she gets to put across an acceptable version of My Man, the old Fanny Brice chestnut. Musical director Frank Owens contributed several new songs to the production, but the numbers sound derivative and even sappy on the same bill with such standards as Body and Soul, On the Sunny Side of the Street and Take the A Train.

Stephens also choreographed the show, and he expertly moves two sets of Cotton Club cuties around the tiny and awkwardly shaped stage, which is already crowded with musicians. One group of dancers is especially noteworthy. Ludie Jones, Juanita Open Under New Ownership DEBBIE KING DEBBIE'S VILLAGE BAR RESTAURANT Market Jonestown 865-3696 TONIGHT D.J.
