I The Daily News, Lebanon, PA, Sunday, February 26, 1995 9B ENTERTAINMENTTRAVEL Nature scores hit in Tigers tonight looked up at me, Stupid, what the ell do you think youre doin? Suddenly, there was this roar. The ele-1 phant screamed the roar of a tiger is something youve never heard before awl it literally does freeze you. Something came at us out of the grass. But, fortunately, the elephant leapt and hit it aside with her trunk and deflected it. There were no guns there, nobody there to shoot it.

When he charged us, the fellow behind me was just praying and the fellow in front just froze. If it hadnt been for the eldVj phant, wed all be dead. And the smile would be on the face of tiger. Vi We actually got charged by a tiger. I could actually smell its Dreath, Hoskins said.

Viewers of Sundays Nature will see the incident, but heres how Hoskins recalled it. It was my fault, he said. We spent days looking for it. It was there. Were talking about a cat thats 10 feet long, bright or--ange, and its just disappeared! You know that you cant see them, but they can see you.

From the upper deck of an elephant, Hoskins, his guide and his elephant handler moved into tall grass where they had cornered the tiger. We knew the tiger was in there. It was a stupid, stupid thing to do. Even the elephant things. When you think of tigers, theres no words, only feelings.

Hoskins, a veteran of such films as Mona Lisa, Mermaids and The Long Good Friday, is a staunch conservationist who maintains his own wildlife preserve in England. Hoskins investigates the fate of the tiger in the Indonesia archipelago, where the last tigers are confined to the island of Sumatra. He also examines how the tiger culture is integrated into the spiritual life of the people. Hoskins and his film crew had to journey to Nepal, however, in the lowlands of the Himalayas, before he could see one in the wild. And thereby hangs a tale.

NEW YORK (AP) Bob Hoskins, the British actor who grappled with an imaginary bunny in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, goes looking for bigger game in todays edition of Nature on PBS. Tigers with Bob Hoskins is typical of the series commitment to making natural history accessible to a mass audience, letting us not only observe wildlife, but also how human beings connect with the natural world. Tigers is a film essay about Hoskins and his visceral, almost primal bonds to one of natures most ferocious predators. Its a personal journey, Hoskins said in an When we think of lions, we think of strength, nobility, all of those to steal I A hnmdaA At.efln from A horrified Austin leopard? They end in a restaurant eating shrimp bonnets and fiddling with chopsticks.

In between, theres a portion of tidbits and a handful of tasting stops, palatable pauses where people are treated to a sidewalk sampling of roast duck and chicken tail buns. Mei Ling Moys tours of Chinatown have been going this way now for about 15 years. As far as she knows, her way is the only way, particularly the way she uses scissors to cut the duck and buns into small pieces so the tourists get just a taste and wont be filled when lunchtime rolls around. What a lunch, too. More than 30 types of Chinese munchies are served with explanations of food styles, table etiquette, and culinary customs.

The Chinese love to eat and talk about food, smiled Moy. In addition, Moy provides a side order or ancient legends, some of which are alive and believed in Chinatown today. I like people to learn about the Chinese people," she says. The more people are exposed to other people, the more we understand each other. The more we understand each other, the more we get along.

The mother of six knows more than a little bit about Chinese culture. Moy, 50, was born and reared above a laundry in the heart of Chinatown. The laundry was owned by her father, Louie Jung. At one time, said Moy, it was the largest laundry in the city and operated around the clock. While her father tended to the laundry downstairs, her mother, Jessie, tended to the kitchen upstairs.

It was there that Mei Ling developed a deep and lasting interest in the food of her ancestors. Following graduation from Dre-xel University with a degree in nutrition, Moy taught at Thomas Jefferson Universitys school of nursing and at cooking and restaurant schools throughout the area. But it was while teaching a Chinese cooking class in an adult evening program that Moy got the touring idea. The 10-week class ended with a field trip to a Chinese grocery store. While pointing out the spices and seasonings used in class, Moy wondered other people would be interested in similar, but expanded excursions.
