Corcoran exhibit illustrates the career of Norman Rockwell Getaways ica calendars, American Magazine, Country Gentleman magazine, Look, the U.S. Army, Ladies Home Journal, Life, and Boys Life. Tickets are required to view Norman Rockwell: Pictures for the American People.

They are priced at $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at TicketMaster outlets, by Phone Charge by calling 1-800-551-7328, or on the Internet at www.ticketmas-ter.com. Same-day tickets can also be purchased, if available, in person at the museum. The Corcoran Gallery of Art (202-639-1700) is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and is closed on Tuesday.

The Corcoran is located at New York Avenue and 17th Street, N.W., southwest of The White House. It is accessible from the Far-ragut North and Farragut West Metro stations. Norman Rockwell: Pictures for the American People, the most comprehensive exhibition Who were J. JLeyendecker, Ellen Pyle, and Constantin Ala-jalov? The Post received millions of requests from readers for reprints. Millions more of The Four Freedom posters were distributed to post offices, schools, railway stations and other public buildings by the U.S. government as part of a war bond drive, making those paintings among the most reproduced pieces of art in history. The Four Freedoms paintings are part of the Corcoran exhibition, as are paintings Rockwell did for the Boy Scouts of Amer illustrations for Saturday Evening Post covers over the years, it is Rockwell who is best known as the magazines illus- trator. And now, all 322 of Rock-! wells Post covers can be seen in Washington, D.C.

The exhibition was co-organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge, and the High Museum of Atlanta, Fifty-one of the paintings are I from the collection of the Nor-! man Rockwell Museum in I Stockbridge, the town where Rockwell lived and worked for jmany years. The others are from private collections and other museums. Following this presentation at the Corcoran, the exhibition will travel to San Diego, then Phoenix, Stock-' bridge, and New York City. I Rockwell made his debut on a 'Post cover on May 20, 1916, with a picture of a boy pushing a baby carriage.

The artists final cover, which appeared on Dec. 14, 1963, was a portrait of New Television Antenna (1949) shows one man on the peak of a house roof adjusting an antenna while a man in a window below looks with glee at a black and white picture appearing on his new television set. The Marriage License records a scene in a courthouse: A county official, wearing wool slacks, a white shirt, and a bow tie, sits behind a tall desk, while a young couple uses a fountain pen to complete an application for a marriage license. There is a cast-iron coal stove in the comer and a calendar from the local bank on the wall showing the date, June 11, 1955. There are also paintings of Rockwells best-known Saturday Evening Post covers.

Game Called Because of Rain (1949), on loan from The National Baseball Hall of Fame, shows rain drops falling on three gathered umpires; the coach of the losing team, Brooklyn, gloats at the Pittsburgh coach, whose team is winning at the bottom of the sixth inning. In Girl at Mirror an adolescent girl views herself wearing lipstick while her doll lies at her side. Rockwells pictures depict humor, warmth, love, life, and social and political commentary. The painting titled, The Problem We All Live With, an illustration for a 1964 article in Look magazine, vividly displays the racial tensions present in America in the 1960s. Over a period of seven months in 1943, Rockwell completed four paintings that appeared in the magazine.

The picture tells the story of a teen-age babysitter who was working on a report for her American history course, sipping on a bottle of Coke, enjoying the quiet while the baby slept. But, then, the baby awoke and began to cry. She tried appeasing the infant with rattles, a teddy bear and a doll but, at 11:40 p.m., the baby was still crying. Frazzled, the teenager holds the baby on her lap, and a book in her hand, Hints to the Baby Sitter, trying to find a solution for her dilemma. The Law Student, another painting for a 1927 Post cover, depicts a young man, wearing a white apron, sitting at a wooden barrel he uses for a desk, reading a law book.

A portrait of Lincoln is tacked on the wall. The viewer assumes that the man is using his lunch break to study. Rockwell could also be considered a historian because he has preserved moments of the history of everyday life in America. DEPARTS BALTIMORE Visits Ft.
