American League dub owners ended a hectic nine-hour meeting with a unanimous vote to shift the 54-year-old franchise of the Philadelphia Athletics to Kansas City. The decision all but broke up the once-esteemed position in baseball of the Mack family. It signalled the finish of one vivid chapter in the national pastime that was etched by the pioneering Connie Mack and opened what should be another under Chicago financier Arnold Johnson.

It was Johnson, 47, a top man in a business that grossed J70.000.000 last year the Automatic Canteen Co. of America who found that money on the barrel-head speaks loudest. Inthe final analysis, his bid of 53,373,000 to buy out the Macks P.oy Earle and Connie including Connie Mack Stadium, was irresistible. PITTSBURGH (UP) Athletic Director Tom Hamilton returned to the head football coaching position at University of Pittsburgh today as interim replacement for ailing Red Dawson in Saturday's game against Navy.

A physician ordered Dawson, whose Panthers have lost the. first three games of a suicide schedule, to stay away from football for at least a week because of a slight heart irregularity and a persistent head cold infection. Hamilton formerly coached both Pitt and their opponent Middies. He directed Pitt in 1331 while awaiting the arrival of Dawson, then an assistant at Michigan State. He was head coach for Navy from 1934 to 1936 and again in 1946 and 1947.

SOUTHERN LOOP CURBS RADIO, NEW ORLEANS IP Southern Assn, clubs have been barred from radio broadcasting or televising home games played on Sundays and holidays and playoff games. The rangy (6-1, 183 pounds) son of Tulsa coach Bemie Witucki has seen only a lew minutes of action for the Irish at his now position, but in a long scrimmage session Tuesday, Witucki operated from the No. 1 fullback position ahead of Junior Don Schaefer. Like most first-year performers, Witucki has much to learn but in practice sessions he has shown a willingness to work hard at the new position. Against Pittsburgh, he carried the ball tiwee for 18 yards. Notre Dames coaches arent camied away by Wituckis success at running In the waning moments of the Pitt game, but he turned In some good blocking in the last Irish touchdown drive, and certainly warrants a shot at the most pressing problem in the backfidd.

Schaefer, however, has the best rushing mark-103 yards of all Irish backs, and his 3 8 average is more steady than sensational. Schaefer has carried the most times, 28, and is an all-around performer, handling punting, extra points and kickoffs when he is in the lineup. Kapish In Action. Witucki worked in the No. backfidd in the scrimmage along with Ralph Guglielmi, Joe Heap and Dean Studer.

After a session on offense, the No. 1 team scrimmaged on defense against Michigan State plays. In the line, the usual regulars were in action, though End Gene a i alternated with Dan Shannon and Paul Matz. Both Studer, Heap and Witucki broke away for long gainers against a reserve team and Gug-lielmi passed for two other scores At the same time, a No. 2 unit was also involved in a contact session as the tempo of preparations for Michigan State increased.

The coaching staff isnt worried about the team's inability to get up for the Spartans. Seniors on the team remember lickings by the Michigan Staters, 33-0, in 1351 and again, 21-3, in 1352. The Spartans started their string of successes against D. in 1330 with a high-powered 36-33 victory at Notre Dame. Defensively, the Irish must prepare for the Spartans speed and passing attack.

M.S.C. is pleasantly burdened with backs who can run for distance at the drop of defender. Quarterback Earl Mor-rall, while not a great average passer, has completed 12 for an average gain of 20 yards each. Indicating the Spartans know what to do once they catch the ball. Expect M.S.C.

Passes. Because of the Michigan State multiple offense, the Irish must be looking for passes from all positions. Coach Duffy Daugherty of the Spartans played three quarterbacks against Indiana last week. In addition to Morrall, converted quarterback Johnny Mat-aock played at left half, and another switched signal-caller Clarence Peaks played right half. After Irish difficulties with Purdue passers and receivers, the Spartans figure to take full ad vantage of the one weakness the Irish have shown on defense.
