You have to give them credit for that. But having a 5-2-1 record makes it a little bit easier to take a loss like this.

We didnt get five victories until late in the season last year. St. Joe cashed in on its first opportunity midway through the first half when the Indians Mike Palmer collided with Marian defender Tim Killilea in the penalty area. St. Joe was awarded a penalty kick and when Matt Jameson booted the ball past Mark Van-11 uffel, the Indians led 1-0.

Less then two minutes later, it was 2-0 as Jameson took a pass from Palmer and dribbled down the sidelines to beat Vanlluffel a second time. Jameson, the leading scorer on the club, has 10 goals this season. That second goal really took a lot of gas out of us," said Roelke. St. Joe took advantage of a misplay by our sweeper.

St. Joes two quick goals turned the game around quickly. Marian actually controlled much of the action early. Marian has really improved," said They actually won the first 20 minutes of the game. Both teams blasted six shots at the net the first 40..

minutes, but St. Joe took its 2-0 advantage into half-; time. St. Joe controlled the field throughout the second half, firing nine shots at the Marian goal Palmer made it 3-0 on an assist from Jameson and David Medow" midway through the final period. Marian managed only two shots the final 40 mmutes, and both of those came in the last five minutes of the game.

Marian hosts Adams at 7 p.m. Wednesday in another important league battle. St. Joe travels to Clay Middle school to take on the host Colonials, also at 7. PREP SPOTLIGHT Defensive consistency might be the difference between first place and fifth place in the Northern Indiana Soccer League standings this season.

It was also the decisive factor in St. Josephs 3-0 victory over Marian at Bethel College Monday. It was the second victory in as many outings during a crucial stretch for the Indians, who lead the league with a 6-0 record. Last week, St. Joe edged Concord, another league power, 2-1.

The Indians play Clay, Penn, Elkhart Central and Adams in their next four games. The important thing is when you look up at the scoreboard after a game and see that zero there, said Indians! coach Larry Patterson. The offense may come and go, but you can always play defense. The majority of the leadership on this team has come from the defense with players like Roy Ketchum, Bobby Stigler and Mike Skurski. St.

Joe has allowed only three goals this season and all have come either on penality kicks or restarts. The strength of the Indians backline might be reflected in the play of David Brach, a reserve filling in for an injured starter at left back. David has filled in and played superbly in two critical games (Concord and Marian) for us, said Patterson. Solid defensive play also has been an element in Marians improving fortune. The Knights, only 7-9-2 a year ago, are 5-2-1 so far this season.

But a couple of mistakes proved costly in Mondays setback that dropped the Marian back into the middle of the NISL standings. St. Joe capitalized on a couple of our mistakes, said Marian coach Roy Roelke. Theyre a strong team, but I felt we played them fairly even the first half. We just made a couple of mistakes and they took Mari.in St Joseph's SJ Matt Jameson unassisted.

Can the Pirates really be contenders in a division where many expected the New York Mets a team whose payroll is four times higher than Pittsburghs to win 100 games?
