(AP) The filly Winning Colors wont be the only lady in the Kentucky Derby today at Churchill Downs. Back for her 114th Derby appearance will be Lady Luck. My daddy always said hed rather be lucky than good, said Jack Van Berg, who won the Derby last year with Alysheba.

Van Berg, who has been good, and lucky, enough to be the only trainer to saddle 5,000 winners, might need a special smile from the Lady today. KENTUCKY DERBY be riding? Ooohhh, Wilbur: This race goes to Forty Niner For the inside track on today's Kentucky Derby, AP sports writer James Litke went right to the source in search of horse sense to a horse, of course, the famous Mr. Ed. By MR. ED LOUISVILLE, Ky.

(AP) I've never run a race myself, but I have plenty of friends who did. Everybody from the millionaires who own the ponies, to the trainers and jockeys who run them, to the crowd lining up outside Uncle Miltie's pawn shop on nearby Fourth Street to hock their belongings for one more ticket to Easy Street believes deep in his heart that he has the winner. But the most important thing anybody needs to know about the Kentucky Derby is this: Whoever is in the lead at the top of the stretch will be wishing the race was over right then and there. Because he or she and Im partial to that second-choice filly. Winning Colors, for obvious reasons is going to hear some hoofbeats.

But before I tell you how they end, let me tell you how they begin. Two horses I happen to like, the unbeaten Maryland-based colt and 5-2 favorite Private Terms and third-choice Forty Nmer, got a raw deal by being stuck as far outside on the post as you can go. Even though there will be 17 starters today, those two boys know they cant let the fillv get away without them, and she's commg out of the No. 11 gate. That means theyre going to have toburn up some oats over the quarter-mile to reach the front by the first turn.

Then youve got the early sprinters, Purdue King, Din's Dancer and Seeking the Gold hurtling to the front, and Risen Star, whos starting along the rail, trying to find his way into the first group. So, heading into the first turn it's Purdue King, Winning Colors, Forty Niner, Dins Dancer and Seeking the Gold, and there's a second wave about three lengths back led by Risen Star. Now, readers are going to know more about this than I would, but Im guessing the Derby rookie aboard Private Terms, Chris Antley, is going to be one nervous pilot coming out of the comer and staring down that long backstretch with all those people screaming their lungs out. And I'm guessing thats when he'll ask Private Terms for some breathing room. But Winning Colors wont go for that, and neither See MR.

EDPage C4 He will saddle lightly regarded Dins Dancer in a field of 17 3-year-olds for the l-mile Derby. If all go to the post at 4: 33 p.m. (South Bend time), under scale weight of 126 pounds, the race will be worth $786,200, with $611,200 to the The early favorites are Private Terms, who has won all seven of his career starts, and Winning Colors, the filly who thrashed eight male rivals in the 1-mile Santa Anita Derby April 9. However, the race generally is considered to be wide open. Asked to handicap the race, Charlie Whittingham, who trains Lively One and who has won more than 500 stakes, said, Any one of a half dozen could win maybe a dozen.

It just depends on who has the luck. At the top of the stretch in the 1986 Derby, Bill Shoemaker, riding the Whittingham-trained Ferdinand, and Pat Day, aboard Rampage, gunned their mounts toward the same hole. Ferdinand got there first and won the race. If you get in tough luck, like getting cut off, its tough to come back again, said Charles Taylor of Windfields Farm, a co-owner of Canadian-bred Regal Classic. Windfields won the 1964 Derby with Canadian-bred Northern Dancer.

The luck of the draw appears to have been with Winning Colors and against Private Terms. The filly will start from post 11, while Private Terms will start from No. 16. The most favorable Derby post-positions are generally believed to be from five through 12. However, Gato Del Sol won from No.

19 in 1983; Swale won from No. 15 in 1984; Ferdinand won from the rail in 1986 and Alysheba won out of No. 3 last year. Of course, there are worse things than a bad post position. Stalwars came down with a 102-degree fever Wednesday and wasnt entered.

Talking about the fickle fate and seemingly eternal optimism that are integral parts of horse racing, Gary Jones, who trains Stalwars said, A trainer once told me, I want to commit suicide, but I want to wait until Thursday to see how my maiden runs. As usual, the Derby, which will be televised by ABC, is a study in contrasts. Winning Colors will be the 13th starter for trainer Kentucky Derby favorite Private Terms gets his nose rubbed by assistant trainer Charles Hadry Jr. D. Wayne Lukas, who will seek his first Derby victory in his eighth consecutive appearance.

Lukas best Derby performance was a third with Partez in 1981. Lukas raced a filly entry in 1984 when Lifes Magic finished eighth and Althea was 19th. Charles Hadry will be saddling his first Derby starter in Private Terms, who worked three-eighths of a mile Friday in 39 1-5 seconds. Granacus, another Catiadian-bred, sizzled the same distance in 35 flat. Five jockeys will be riding in their first Derby.

They are Chris Antley on Private Terms, Julio Pezua on Intensive Command, Pat Johnson on Sea Trek, Shane Romero on Jims Orbit and Ken Desormeaux on Purdue King. The 56-year-old Shoemaker will ride Lively One in his 26th Derby in a bid for a record-tying fifth victory. The Shoe won with Swaps, 1955; Tomy Lee, 1959, Lucky Debonair, 1965, and Ferdinand. The riders of five Derby winners were Eddie Arcaro and Bill Har-tack. Winning Colors will be the 35th filly to start in the Derby and will be trying to become the third to win.

The winners were Regret, 1915, and Genuine Risk, 1980. Kingpost will be trying to become the eighth gelding to win the Derby and the first since Clyde Van Dusen broke from the No. 20 post to do it in 1929. Private Terms will be trying to become the fifth unbeaten winner of the Derby. Sandberg performs as a leading man Miscues derail S.B.

CHICAGO (AP) Being moved up to the leadoff spot in the Chicago Cubs lineup doesnt bother Ryne Sandberg at alL Not the way Im going now, spid Sandberg, whose tie-breaking homer in the fifth inning Friday, along with a homer by Jim Sundberg, led the Cubs to their fourth straight victory, a 3-2 decision over the San Francisco Giants. I like leading off as long as were successful and winning games, said Sandberg.

It has certainly helped me. Since leading off, Sandberg, who had been batting .188, has a six-game hitting streak and is batting 393 with 11 hits Bi 28 at bats, including four doubles and two home runs. Sundberg, who has been filling in at catcher for Jody Davis, sidelined with sprained his right big toe, also is on a hitting spree. He has had six hits in his last 14 at bats, Im an insurance policy, said Sundberg. My job is to do the best I can when Jody is hurl of which helped Greg Maddux boost his record to 5-2, although he needed relief help in the late innings with Rich Gossage getting his fourth save.

The Giants picked up a consolation run in the ninth inning to make the game close. Jeff Leonard singled and came around on a balk and a pair of infield outs. Were just not scoring runs, said Manager Roger Craig. Dont get me wrong. Greg Maddux pitched a good game and weve been getting good pitching, but were just not hitting.

Craig lifted starter Mike LaCoss after five innings because of a spasm in his right shoulder. He hurt it on a pitch to Maddux, said Craig. I dont think its serious and he doesnt think hell miss a turn. Sandbergs homer, his fifth, came off LaCoss, 1-3, with one out in the fifth inning and snapped a 1-1 tie. Sundberg hit his first of the season in the sixth inning off reliever AtleejHammaker.

Maadux allowed one run on seven hits in 7 1-3 innings. He walked one and struck out seven before being relieved By Frank DiPino with one out and runners on first and second in the eighth inning. Di-Pino got pinch-hitter Joel Youngblood to hit into a fielders choice, but walked Will Clark to load the bases. Les Lancaster then came on and struck out Kevin Mitchell before Gossage finished up. The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Dave Martinez doubled, Andre Dawson drew his first of three walks and Rafael Palmeiro singled to score Martinez. are 12-3 at home and have won seven of their last nine. South Bend fell to 12-16. White Sox starter Curt Hasler beat Clinton earlier this season and turned in a strong performance against Beloit in his last outing. But five errors and three unearned runs knocked Hasler off the mound after five innings this time.

White Sox bullpen hurlers also know about ByCURTRALLO Tribune Sports Writer Insanity, temporary or otherwise, is not a prerequisite for work in a minor-league baseball teams bullpen. On the other hand, it certainly cant hurt. Life in the bullpen invites a little wackiness and a lot of levity.

Relief pitchers, whose patron saints include such pillars of weirdness as Tug McGraw and Sparky Lyle, spend eight innings in the obscurity of the bullpen and then get thrown into the fire. South Bend White Sox relievers Rob Resni-koff, Mark Tortorice, Mike Girouard, Randy Robinson and Keith Felden seem to be able to adapt to life in the bullpen. Each has gained the edge by working some not-so-typical jobs during the off-season. Keith Felden, who was a chef, traded that occupation to survey land. The only problem was that the land happened to be in the Florida Everglades home of snakes, alligators and other critters with fangs.

and Victor Diaz are more power pitchers. Robinson and Resnikoff are finesse pitchers. Part of being a reliever is keeping warm despite sitting on the bench in 40-degree weather. The pitchers also keep busy by studying the competition. We sit in the bullpen looking at the batters, said Resnikoff.

We make mental notes. When you go in you're pumped up and ready to throw quality strikes. Staying alert Is part of the job description. You have to learn how to turn it on and turn it off, said Tortorice. You have to adapt to adversity.

Relief pitchers dont argue the fact that they own a special reputation in baseball. Were a rare breed, said Felden. South Bend pitchers cant be blamed for pitching to the beat of a different drum. Their coach in spring training, Moe Drabowsky, ordered Chinese food and had it delivered to the bullpen during his playing days. week ago when starter Steve Schrenk pulled a muscle throwing a pitch.

You have to come in and be your best because its a tense situation, Girouard said. "When it comes down to the bullpen, thats the game, said Resnikoff. Tortorice has worked both sides of the fence. He started three games before being switched to the bullpen to give the relief corps another flamethrower. Starting pitchers can get into a groove, said Tortorice.

Relievers arent in more than two or three innings. You go in and do the job and dont add gasoline to the fire. Its like the cavalry pulling up the rear. Felden said the relievers prime objective is to get the first batter out. Youve got to go in and get that first guy," said Felden.

Robinson pours cement. Youve got to be a little strange, said Resnikoff. You can sit there for five days and not get into a game but you have to be ready. You watch for 8 innings and all of the sudden youre in a spot where one pitch you throw will make you a hero or a goal Resnikoff said. Youve got to be different and like the excitement Robinson said that hanging loose is the name of the game.

If youre a starter, you know youre going to go every five days, said Robinsoa You can get mentally prepared." Relief pitchers are on call. Girouard got thrown into the game in the third inning a I mm, I I RESNIKOFF GIROUARO 9 1 I.
