The' vice presidential candidate said neither he nor Eisenhower has had the opportunity to look into McCarthys charges and there fore neither had criticized McCarthys views and methods. 4 4 4 1 dont intend to comment on his methods or charges until I know the facts, Nixon declared.

He said he plans tp enter Wisconsin, but only after the Sept. 9 primary in that state. Nixon discussed the matter with a reporter after there had been published reports that he would shun McCarthy. Earlier today he had authorized this statement in reply to those reports: I am going to assist in the election of Republican members of the House and Senate where ever the opportunity presents. When the voters pick i nominee, I will accept the decision and abide by it in any state.

Nixons statement followed one by Sen. Monroney (D-Okla), challenging Eisenhower to disassociate himself from the tactics" of McCarthy. Monroney, chairman of the speakers bureau of the Democratic National Committee, said Eisenhower must repudiate promptly and clearly a statement that he would endorse and campaign ac tively for McCarthy. The statement was made Thurs day night by Sen. Mundt (R-S D) co-chairman of the Republican campaign speakers bureau.

Mundt said Eisenhower would support McCarthy, and other conservative Republican senators up for re-election, as members of the Re publican team. Those stricken usually recovered quickly or die within 24 to 48 hours.

Dr. Merrill said the epidemic may reach as far north as Shasta County near the Oregon border before summer is over. He said, however, that it is not expected to branch out of the interior valleys. Kohler, at the instigation of a minority group which has sought to discredit the Congress for years, is now apparently referring the question to county boards. The Congress county committees, although duly elected by the people, are being bypassed. The state's trusteeship in the matter of deer and other forms of wildlife is clear.

The deer herd is state property and decisions as to Its management must be done on state basis. And that is why the final recommendations of the Congress are made in a state meeting of county delegations. The Congress recommendations are the expressed will of a majority of the people of the state. No one objects to closed deer areas, if such are set up according to good game management. The present turmoil, however, goes beyond that.

It recognizes the fact that the Governor, who must sign fish and game season orders, is vulnerable to organized minority action. The Action Committee was formed last month by the Executive Committee of the Congress, with Congress Chairman Jack Lynch of Gordon, appointing Herbert Guenzl of Merrill Richard Hemp of Mosinee, L. C. Whlffen of Milwaukee and Ed Palmer of Ellsworth to make it up. All concurred in todays statement except Palmer, who is out of the 6tate, and Lynch approved Its release.

Burnham, city biochemist, however remained optimistic. We shall return again and again until every last sneeze is driven Into the sea, he said in a communique. Burnham took time out from his duties on the front to brief reporters and photographers at his headquarters, a City Health Department truck equipped with a tank, a gasoline pump and a hose. This 2-4D, he said, does not kill the weed immediately. Nevertheless it is deadly.

It contains a plant hormone which causes the week to grow so fast that the weed actually grows Itself to death. As Burnham talked the enemy poured a deadly fire of Pollen Into the command post. A photographer began to sneeze. He was led away from the front, eyes red and tears streaming. As Sherman said, War is no bowl of cherries.

Auto Dealer (Continued from page 1) it played in Knetzers return to custody after a jailbreak June 17. Knetzer, whose multi-million dollar auto business fizzled four years ago, was, released from his jail cell here seven times in a period of two years to repay his creditors. Grant was assigned to guard him. TIE LE1VER printed here last week urging exhaustive studies of every fhtal automobile accident (provoked by the DeForest crash in which four persons were killed and 11 injured) has brought two alternative suggestions. Heres one from Mrs.

Edward W. Smykay, 302 S. Mills My husband and, I recently moved to Madison from Maine. The State Highway Commission of Maine three years ago instituted a policy of marking the scene of fatal accident with a red sign, showing date of accident and number killed. There has been some objection to this policy, but the majority of people feel as I do, that these markers are a sober and intelligent method of Impressing the ever present danger of accidents upon the driver while he is driving.

This is not a cure I dont think there is one but it is a feasible preventive measure. The other letter raises a basic and Interesting question Involving childhood education which almost hints that drivers are too careful! Signed by B. R-, it reads: When two fellows get together and the talk turns to automobiles the subject of Speed is always dominant. Had her wide open yet? How much will she do? The luxury and comforts and downright convenience of owning a modern car are lost to youngsters today, perhaps because they never had to get by with old Dobbin and a wagon or buggy. ttnpiIE BIG TOPIC Instead is speed, and when these kids talk about speed they dont mean 60! The most important question is bow fist it will travel wide open.

Your very interesting column about the DeForest tragedy and whether future accidents of similar nature could be avoided by a detailed study of this case was, to me, very thought provoking. It seems to me that in the education of our youth behind a wheel we start years too late. We wait until a boy gets near his 16th birthday before we begin to teach him about driving. Driver education should begin when a child begins to walk alone. Not the actual physical aspects of driving an automobile, of course, but knowledge, and above all, respect and fear of an automobile.

Take a spin out through our city sometime and watch children of all ages around cars. What happens? They ignore them, dont they? That, my friends. Is the first major catastrophe. OUR STREET, in a suburban area, we have no sidewalks XX yet, and the youngsters are permitted to use the street for their tricycling and play. Result: we drivers have to get out of the kids way when we drive, stop continually, steer around and in general, we look out for the kids.

Instead, the kids should be looking out for us. They have absolutely no fear of a moving vehicle. And why should they? We oldsters are breaking our necks to avoid hitting one of them. 4 (tritHE CHILDREN see this is the case. They soon learn we wont harm them.

They know we practically drive up over a curb to avoid them. Why, then, should they pay any attention to us as we pass? Most of the parents are damnably unconcerned. Few are, you know, until the first accident occurs. Then full responsibility is thrust on the driver. Something should be done when children are infants.

They must be taught to fear the street and its deadly traffic and forbidden to enter it alone. I fear we are making a mistake allowing our children to worship speed, to bow in honor at the throne of tangled wreckage and daring escape. Everywhere nowadays midget racers, stock cars and countless death defiers are setting a sickening example for our youth. tf'JV'O, WE cannot avoid accidents by studing past accidents' It ll would be far wiser to study future safety. This can be done when a child is first learning to walk by teaching him that the streets are not playgrounds and that the passing auto is as deadly as a serpent.

Yes, friend, and that takes a little time on the part of the parents if they are willing to give it I began with my own children in the country, walking with them, and coming to a full stop when we came to the road, even when no cars were in sight. They soon got the idea, and stopped even when I forgot and walked ahead. Thus do we school our offspring and are schooled by them! A V- I-' 4W 1 1 Childs Column On McCarthy Gets Left Out State Journal Falls to Print Blast at Senators Tactics from page 1) in international co-operation and who have great admiration and respect for Hoffman. 4 Hoffman Is also a friend and long-time associate of Benton. They worked together to help found the Committee for Economic Development.

At a CED lunch in Washington this spring Benton introduced Hoffman, as the principal speaker, with a glowing tribute to him for what he had done for America and the world. So it was with no reluctance that Hoffman responded to Bentons request and gave under oath his refutation on the McCarthy attack aimed primarily at Gen. George C. Marshall as a sort of master traitor. The witness explained that he had come without a subpoena, since he knew he would have been subpoenaed in any event.

This last is also important in connection with the coming campaign. Gov. Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin of Maryland has already attacked Gov. Adlai Stevenson, the Democratic candidate for President, because he gave a deposition in the Alger Hiss case. 4 4 4.

Hiss counsel called on Stevenson for a deposition. That was three years ago, during the first Hiss trial. Stevenson said his duties as governor prevented him from going to New Yoj-k to testify. But he answered questions under oath in Springfield in a deposition used in the trial. He testified that he had known Hiss briefly in the Agriculture Adjustment Arminlstration in 1933 and later in 1945 and 46 In the United Na tions and the State Department.

Asked what Hiss reputation for integrity, loyalty and veracity was, based on what other persons had told him, Stevenson replied good. He also testified that he had heard no reports prior to 1948 that Hiss was a Communist or that he had taken confidential documents from department files. When the Hiss deposition was raised in an interview prior to the Chicago convention, Stevenson, after explaining what his role had been said; It seems to me that it will be a very sad day for Anglo-Saxon justice when any man, and especially a lawyer, will refuse to give honest evidence in a criminal trial for fear the defendant in an action may eventually be found guilty. What would happen to our whole system of law if such timidity prevailed? I feel very strongly that it is one of the basic responsibilities of any Citizen, and most 'especially of lawyers, to testify to the best of their ability on any case in which they may have evidence that either side considers relevant. As to the value of their testimony, that is for the jury to decide.

More important than the fate of any individual, perhaps even more important than the outcome of the election in November, is this matter of the sanctity of law guaranteeing the indivdual a fair trial. Reckless charges the deliberate assertion that black is white and white 13 read guilty by association, the atmosphere of suspicion and fear, all this has done harm to the process of law 1q this country. Hoffman was testifying under a code of law as to his knowledge of the great contribution made by the Marshall Plan in helping to stem the tide of communism. He was testifying, too, to his conviction of Gen. Marshalls selfless devotion throughout his life to his country.

It happens, of course, that Gen. Eisenhower is now under great pressure to go into Wisconsin and put the stamp of approval on Me Carthy. It happens, too, that Gen Marshall had more to do than anyone else with advancing Eisenhower to the leadership of the armies of the world in the last war. That is the politics of this matter. But more important is the fact that Paul Hoffman has freely testified under due process of law as to his knowledge and belief.

The third car tipped to its side and skidded along the ground. The power lines that provide the lines electricity writhed about the accident scene, shower ing sparks over the area and hampering rescue work. Before the power had been cut off, one of the lines welded itself to a track. Two of the cars remained upright after the derailment, and two balanced precariously to one side.

The crash occurred at 4:25 p.m. CST just south of Rafine, ai the Chickory Road crossing, which is protected only by a wooden sign. Carl H. Thor, 04, of Racine, who was injured slightly, said: There was no screaming or panic or anything like that when we hit. It was all over too quick.

(U.R The International Typographical Union today adopted a resolution requir-its members to take an anti-Com-munist oath. The measure was approved unanimously by delegates to organizations centennial convention here who later rose and took an anti-Communlst oath. It declared: that I am not a member of the Communist party at now proved to- have allegiance to a foreign power and advocating the overthrow of our government by force and violence; nor to any other party or group of any kind whatsoever which fails to place loyalty to the government of the United States of America over any other consideration. The delegates then plunged Into one of the hottest Issues of their meeting, the question of whether to continue publication of newspapers in cities where printers or mailing room employes of a printing plant go on strike. Officials of the union said the matter is shaping up as a fight between the conservatives and the more liberal elements of the union.

The ITU publishes newspapers in cities where printers or mailers are out on strike. The majority wing of the ITU, including Woodruff Randolph, international president, and the officers and committees in charge of the convention were said to be solidly behind the program. Opponents of the union pub- ishing program called Unitypo, headed by Charles Tucker of Indianapolis, said the union printing project is eating up union money like a monster. Tucker said he wanted to know low much the program costs and where the money goes. An official favorable to the program said the ITU didnt want to air its disputes in public because the American Publishers Association and the printing industry would learn about its financial arragements.

The union would go to pieces if the Unitypo defense idea Is junked, Randolph said. Gene Autry (Continued from page 1) land. Is S-13 one of them? Gene, with the aid of his airplane, in time finds out. Genes first-in-command is tough old cow-poke named Gimlet, who still has more faith in his six-shooter than in an airplane. Gimlet looks after things for Gene at the fabulous Flying A Ranch.

Gene and Gimlet share many moments of peril together Including the time they find a secret army rocket base where man-made guided missiles are hurled into the sky. 4- Born on a ranch near Tioga, Gene moved to Ravia, with his family at an early age. His father was a cattle buyer and the young cowboy spent most of his after-school hours helping with the stock and the many other chores around the Autry spread. Occasionally he earned a bit of spending money singing at local entertainments. An added attraction for his act was a mail order guitar which he taught himself to play around Ada, Okla.

Gene was discovered by the late Will Rogers in the little railroad station at Chelsea, Okla. Gene was strumming on his guitar and singing the simple cowboy ballads he knew so well, while work ing as a relief telegrapher. Wills praise for the youngsters voice and personality encouraged Autry to go East where he eventually made good. Today Gene Autry Is one of the really all-time greats of radio, television, and the movies. He even had a town officially named after him In Oklahoma, the state where he grew up.

Hagerty, Eisenhowers press chief, said the GOP nominee had no comment to make on Mundts broadcast. As to whether Eisenhower will endorse McCarthy, Hagerty said he was authorized to say only: The gen eral speaks for himself. Eisenhower told a news conference several weeks ago he would take no part in primaries but would get behind all GOP candidates in November without exception.

In this connection, Eisenhower said in a speech at Abilene, before his nomination that no one was more determined than he to root out Communists, but not at the expense of besmirching lnno cent people. Monroney said it is Incredible that Gen. Eisenhower can embrace McCarthy in view of the Wisconsin Republicans vile attack upon Gen. George C. Marshall.

In a senate speech last year, McCarthy accused Marshall, wartime chief of staff and former secretary of state, of being part of a black conspiracy to lead the nation down the road of disaster. Claiming that Marshall was responsible for Eisenhowers mill tary fame, Monroney said the GOP nominee knows better than anyone else of Gen. Marshalls great service and patriotism to hi: country. On an issue this basic, mere silence on Gen. Eisenhowers part will not absolve him from responsibility for Sen.

Mundts remarks. Since Sen. Mundt is an official of the Eisenhower campaign, the only way the general can disassociate himself from this type of campaign, tactics is to promptly and clearly repudiate this statement by Sen. Mundt. Monroney said that either Mundt hasnt read McCarthys scurrilous attack on Gen.

Eisenhowers friend and sponsor, or he fails to grant to his candidate any of the human loyalties of a friend for a friend. In a discussion of campaign issues Thursday night over the Mutual Broadcasting Systems radio program Reporters' Mundt was asked how Eisenhower would apply his Middle way phil osophy to the problem of supporting such conservatives as McCarthy and Sens. Kem of Missouri, Jenner of Indiana and Brlcker of Ohio. Mundt answered: Gen. Eisenhower has said he Is not going to discuss his philosophies in terms of personalities.
