Route 1, Topeka, daughter, July 10. ROSELAND The proposed Signature Inn project was rejected Thursday night by the Roseland Town Board. In a meeting that drew a packed house, the three-member board turned down a rezoning petition by a 2-1 vote.

The petition had received favorable recommendation last month from the Area Plan Commission, but the town board has the final word on rezoning. Its rejection virtually ends the rezoning attempt. Signature Inn wanted to build the 125-room motel at 221-229 Dixie Way S. on a four-acre site containing 15 parcels of land. Vernon Street, which runs through the center of the complex, would have been vacated.

Board Member Stan Durski said he voted against the petition, arguing the motel complex was ill-suited for that particular area in town. "My biggest objection is that it would have ruined the neighborhood, in my opinion," he said. Durski feels the motel should pursue purchasing property to the south, closer to the Toll Road, that is already zoned commercial. "It is land that is mostly vacant," he said. "Once we used it as town park." Durski was joined in opposition to the plan by Board Member Walt Winenger.

"I see the potential in the future for additional money for the town," Allen said. "In my opinion it was a dead area. Nothing had been developed in that area for at least 20 years that I am aware of." Allen said the Signature Inn representatives attending the meeting did not indicate if they intend to pursue the matter further. "They've been working for a year-and-a-half to two years on this project and whether they will come back and try again, I don't know," he said. Dave's Gym owner dies David J.
