Bronzed and hardened by long exposure to the hardships of tropical warfare, Fiist Sgt. Darwin Braithwaite is here on furlough at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Braithwaite. A member of the 32nd division, he is a veteran of three and one half years of service, including nearly two years in the Southwest Pacific and participation in two major New Guinea campaigns, the one against Buna and the one above Saidor toward Madang.

Behind him, also, are three months in a hospital in Australia after an attack of typhus. His experiences include a 100-mile trek through pathless jungle where the men waded waist-deep in mud and had to hack out paths through the underbrush, dependent upon rations dropped from planes. On his blouse are ribbons which show that he was in service a year before Pearl Harbor, the Southwest Pacific service ribbon with two gold stars and the presidential citation ribbon issued to all members of the 32nd division for their part in the Buna campaign. When he arrived home he saw for the first time his little sister, Sandra, who was born after he left for foreign service. Enlisted Guard Sgt.

Braithwaite enlisted early in 1940 in Co. of the national guard at Platteville while a student at State Teachers college. The company entered federal service in October, 1940. Leaving the United States in April, 1942, they landed 21 days later at Port Adelaide, Australia. Enroute they by-passed the battle of Coral Seas.

In September 1942 they entered the Buna drive in New Guinea, a campaign which Braithwaite described as rugged." They trekked 100 miles through the jungle in 14 days in this drive. When they took possession of Buna at the completion of the fight they found it completely shattered. His group left for Australia by boat in February of 1943 and the second day out Braithwaite came dow'n with typhus. After reaching Australia he was taken to a hospital where his condition for some time was critical. A three months stay at Good-enough Island preceded his second trip to New Guinea.

The campaign in which he participated is still in progress, but his group cut the main Jap supply route between Ramu and Madang and thereby isolated many Japs. These soldiers are still back in the hills and are gradually drifting back, he said. All the Allied forces have to do is pick them off as they show up. Leaves Front Lines Relief from war duty came Feb. 24 when he left the front lines and by the middle of March he was on a boat headed back to the United States and home.

The return trip took 17 days. Not all of Sgt. Braithwaites memories, however, are grisly recollections of bitter fighting. Even jungle war has its lighter side and he chuckles as he tells of Jungle juice. Jungle juice, one must hasten to explain, is a sort of bootleg brew patterned after the native drinks and manufactured by the soldiers when they are in one place long Practical RAINWEAR FOR THE FAMILY Mens Fly-Front Coat Womens Puddle Jumper Bible Conference To Be Held Here CLEANER ik I' ot uCL5hinj ALL PAINT 498 Attractive fly-front models gabardine, practical flap' Sizes 12-20.

Braithwaite said that some of the men had carefully prepared recipes for its manufacture, but he neglected to secure all of the details. In brief, it was made from fruit juices, dried fruits and plenty of sugar. Placed in receptacles, it was permitted to ferment from 10 flays to two weeks. At the end of this time the whole was covered with a thick, dark brown scum.

The liquor waa then strained through a handkerchief after which it was ready for consumption. It packs a powerful wallop.
