Shelter homes are needed for children BERRIEN CENTER The' Berrien County Juvenile Center is in urgent need of footer homes to -be used on an emergency basis as shelter homes for delinquent chil- dren, according to Alzeni Crumble, supervisor of detention services. Shelter' homes are licensed foster homes that are used for the temporary placement of children pending their hearing in juvenile court. Crumble said children placed in shelter care are those who do not present a serious risk to. the community, but who cannot be returned home because there is no proper parental supervision or there are other family problems.

Children and youth placed in-shelter care are generally those who are charged with property of- fenses or offenses such as running away from home or being incorrigi-. ble. Crumble said. In most cases-' they will not stay in the shelter home longer than 21 days, the time it takes for the court to order a disposition. 7, According to Charles Kehoe, rector of court services, it is not efficient to use the Juvenile Center for children who are not a high risk, to the community.

Shelter care only costs one-tenth of what detention costs, he said, and in most cases is more helpful to the -child. Shelter homes are usually licensed for a maximum of two chil-" dren. Foster parents In those homes are expected to accept a child referred by the court at any time of the day or night For this, the shelter parents are paid 312 per day per child, said Crumble. Families interested in being considered to be licensed as a shelter home should contact Crumble at the Berrien County Juvenile Center at 471-2831.
