i Class News All of us welcomed the one -day of vacation last Monday while the went to Sioux City to be educated. This past week the home ec girls practiced making a bed Vpa- tient in it. The Junior class is busy working decorations for the'banquet. We plan to have the banquet on Friday, April 25. In American History we are reading about the administration of Wood row Wilson and how he met the problems the tariff, the banking and the industrial problem.

We are studying some "Masters of -American Literature." These masters are William Cullen Bryant, Washing- 'ton Irving, Edgar Allen Poe and. thaniel Hawthorne. In bookkeeping we are finishing Project 4 which was a complete book keeping cycle, using the combined 'cash journal. Reporter, Judie Dethmers Sophmore News For Biology this past week we 'have been studying about the various types of bacteria and the harm and good they do for us. We have seen a couple of -films about great in the field of bacteriology.

We have just started a new chapter 'in geometry on proportion. In World'History class we are now on the chapter of the Industrial Revolution. Here we are learning of all 'the benefits we get from mass pro- and the use of machines in factories and the home. The Sheldon Band and choir entertained us with several numbers Wednesday, which I am sure was enjoyed by all. In English we have been conjugating verbs.

We have learned to avoid shifting of tenses in our written work. Freshman News In Algebra we have finished the chapter which consisted of fractions. The things we learned to do with them were add, subtract, multiply Tind divide. We had a test Monday. We have started the chapter entitled Proportion, and Variation." In typing we are continuing to com plete our jobs in an advertising department.

We have been having five minute timed writings to increase our speed. In English we arc learning how to interpret poems. Some we have studied are "Lockinvar," "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," and "The Lady of Shallot." It won't be long and we will have completed our literature books and will begin In general science we are studying about alcohol and it bad and good effects upon a person. We also studied how cigarettes can do more harm than good to a person. Reporter, Audrey Kroon Kindergarten A sign of spring has appeared in our room.

We have bluebirds flying across the front, in the windows and in the doorway. It was fun making these. The following had perfect attendance last six weeks; Calvin Burggraaff, Ricky Kruelen, Ramona Mackie, Donna Olson, Nancy Vanden Brink, Douglas Van Mcctcrcn, Virgil Van Ommeren, Luella Walinga, and Wayne Woclber. Friday was an exciting day in our room. We finished our first reading pre-primer "We Look and See" and had-two birthday parties.

Joyce Van Diepen and Ricky Kruelen were six ycnrs old. We played two games and they treated us to candy bars. Sioux Stockmen Win 4-H Basketball Tournament! First, Grade News We have completed our supplemen tary readers "Round About." We now are reading from "Guess Who" another supplementary reader. The workbooks to accompany our reader are very interesting and each one is striving for perfection. The tulips Cynthia Rensink'brought to school are blooming.

We were so thrilled on Monday morning to see a whole group of beautiful red flowers. In phonics we have been learning to use and CK. In numbers we are learning our combinations of 8. Free hand paper cutting, making lovely designs, can be seen hanging in 'our room. We also-colored kites and mounted them on colored paper.

Art time is always very fascinating and each gives our room a new look. Second Grade News We are enjoying the stories in our new books "The New More Friends and Neighbors." The experience of the children on Oak Hill reminds us of our own good times. We are happy to have Philip back again. John celebrated his birthday Tuesday. He brought treats for all his classmates.

Glenda, Sandra, John, Linda, VJan- et, James H-, Mavis, Stanley, Douglas, Larry Leslie, Karen, Wayne, Sheryl, V. Michael, Barbara, and Bonnie had perfect spelling lessons the past week. We were happy to have Mrs. Green, Mrs. Alons and Mrs.

De Zeeuw visit our room last Friday afternoon. Third Grade News We are busy working multiplication and division problems of 5's in our arithmetic lessons. In our reading lessons we are study Animal Trails." We also, learn about their habits of living. Nelva Burggraaff, Eldon Van Dyk, Delores Gordon, Allen Baartman have been absent several days due to illness. The pupils, having perfect spelling lessons this week are; Valerie Carlr son, Linda Van Ommeren, Donna Slykhuis, Patricia Salmon, Dianne Boone, Linda Moret, Gary Rons and Linda Dethmers.

During our art period, we decorated our bulletin board. We have been making a Dutch scene. We have wind mills, tulips and Dutch boys and girls. Fourth and Fiftn Grade News We were happy to have Mrs. De Zeeuw and Mrs.

Alons visit our room last week Thursday. Wo finished counting the number of English mistakes-we had made and put in the box. Our winner was Noreen. She had made only 21 mistakes during that time of about 4 weeks. Randy ran a close second with only 23.

We arc busy working on poppy pos ters. All those who want to are making them and about 15 of us are doing it. In science the fourth grade is study ing about what makes day and night and also the seasons of the year. Sixth Grade News In English we are studying poems. We are memorizing Robert Louis Stevenson poem.

The Wind and have each made a poster to represent the poem. In arithmetic we are adding and subtracting decimals. We are also finding sale prices of various articles. We are studying about good groom ing and the care of the skin in health. We are learning about electric currents in science and problems and industries of India in social studies.

Faye Siderius was appointed reporter for the next six weeks. This poem was written by Dennis Phelps in English class and was voted the best by the class. Springtime The smell of flowers is in the air, You can run and play without a care, And all around us the birds will sing, Oh, I'm so glad it will soon be spring. There's March and April and May, that's all, But I'm so glad that it still isn't fall, And in this time children's voices will ring, Oh, I'm so glad, it will soon bo spring. Vanderwtttf of the Capel Propellers was high point man with 23 points, For Larry Blpemendaal had 18 points. Schafer of Capel had 17 Sioux Stockmen by whining, deprived Capel of winning the good, as they were trying for tljieir third consecutive championship. In the third place game, the Western Go-Getters defeated the Shferi- dan Livestock Growers 50 to 46. Heit ritter of Sheridan was higfr point man with 16 points, while Irwin Van Beek of the Western Go-Getters led his team with 14 points.

Mayor Gerrit Slothouber 'African Safari" Will Be Sunday School Convention Shown at Boyden March 20 To Be Held on March 25th A film with narration by the author will be shown in the'Boyden School Auditorium at 7:30, Thursday, March 20. This film "African Safari" was taken by Henry Brockhouse on his recent trip to Africa.

Henry is the son of Ray Brockhouse who lives in Boyden. It is unlikely that you have ever seen, a film quite like this. It is exciting, adventuresome, and educational and will prove to be of value to everyone. Admission is 600 for adults and for anyone of school age; Preschool 'children will be admitted free. All proceeds will go to the school.

School Board Reorganized at Meeting on Monday Evening. The Thirty-Fourth Annual Sunday School Convention of Sioux County and vicinity will be held Tuesday, March 25th, at the First Reformed! Church in Hull, Iowa. The Convention Director will be Rev. Sherman Williams of Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois. The Reorganization meeting of the School Board of the Independent School District of Boyden was held Monday evening. Mr. Tony Slothouber was re-elected president. Other board members are Kenneth Meyn, Gerrit Alons, Joe Fiihr and Lawrence Salmon. Logan' Vanden Brink is Secretary "and Cliff i Vander Wilt is Treasurer.

Four County Meeting Afour county meeting of the Am- erican Legion and Auxiliary will be held at Sheldon Legion rooms at i Sheldon, Iowa, Monday, March 31st at 8:00 p.m. This is for all American i Legion and Auxiliary members. The members sang the song "Were You There?" The meeting was adjourned. A delicious lunch was served by Mary Ellen and her mother. Reporter, Mary Ellen Salmon Rev. Sherman Williams Mr. Williams has been a pastor for 15 years and has used the Sunday School as a church builder.

He built one of Spokane, Washington's larger Sunday Schools, winning first place in regional attendance contests for two years. He was chairman of the 'Inland Empire Sunday School Convention in Washington State, past president of Spokane School of the Bible, one of the founders of Northwest Christian Schools, has been a member of the General Council of National Sunday School Association, and served as Washington State representative. Mr. Williams has a rich background in practical Sunday School work, with know-how, show-how, do-how presentation. He has appeared on the.

programs of numerous regional Sunday School conferences and conventions across the United States and Canada, as well as speaking at a xum ber of national Sunday School conventions sponsored by the National Sunday School Association. County Meeting The Sioux County American Legion and Auxiliary meeting will held Thursday, March 27 at 8:00 p.m. at the Sioux Center Town Hall. All Legion and Auxiliary members are invited and welcome to attend. Hymn Sing at U.

P. Church Next Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The Mr. and Mrs. Fellowship of the United Presbyterian church is sponsoring a Hymn Sing to be held in the church Sunday evening, March 23rd, at 7:30 o'clock.

Prof. Merrill Davis of Westmar Col lege at Le Mars will lead the singing. There will be several special musical numbers. The public is cordially invited to attend. Northwestern College of Orange City, Iowa, has completed its arrange ments for the A Cappella Choir to take its annual spring tour. The choir this year will present concerts in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Canada, and New York, giving concerts in several Reformed Churches, also presenting radio and TV programs. Connie Zylstra, Beth Bos, Delora Koefe, Terril De Jong, Benjamin Koerselman are members of the traveling choir from Hull this year. Mayor's Court Brownies The Brownie Scouts met Tuesday afternoon at the Legion Hall, with their leader, Mrs.

Howard Verrips. There were eight brownies present. Gloria Vande Hoef joined our scouts. Janet Green was in charge of games. Linda Van Ommeren served the treats at the close of the afternoon.

Reporter, Linda Van Ommeren Service Man's Address Lawrence Rowenhorst of Orange City was arrested by Marshall Ray Van Diepen for speeding. Defendant pleaded guilty and mayor Slothouber fined him $5.00 and court costs. Mayor Gerrit Slothouber Telephone Meeting The Sheridan Co-op Telephone' meeting was held Saturday, March' 15, 1958 at the mayor's office for; their annual business meeting. Mr. Slothouber gave the yearly reports for the year ending March 1st, 1958.

Y. Boyden Pair Fined For "Assault and Battery" LeRoy Moret, 26, and Harvey Moret, 20, both of Boyden, entered pleas of guilty to charges of "assault and battery" in Justice Court here. Justice of the Peace Reuben De Valois heard the case. The two Moret brothers were arrested after charges were filed by Boyden public school superintendent Dale E. Moen and school board president Anthony Slothouber.

It was charged that the Morets assaulted Frederick Reimers and Leland Doorenbos, both 16 years old. LeRoy Moret was fined and costs. Harvey Moret was fined and costs. Orange City Capital Capel Belles SICK Bert Walinga is confined to his bed due to pneumonia. Mrs.

Arie Baartman left the Sheldon hospital and is now at the home of her daughter Mrs. Art Thomassen in Sheldon. John Grooters is confined to his bed most of the time duo to a heart condition. Mrs. Henry Rohde is a patient at Grosseman hospital in Orange City where she underwent surgery this pnst week.

The Capel Belles held their regular meeting in March at the home of Herman Vander Vliet with all the members present. Roll call was "Tell how to prepare different salads." We all brought a sample along. A talk on "Why we need salads," was given by Ruth De Jong. Another talk was given on "Storage of Fresh Vegetables" by Linda Bomgaars. TWO demonstrations were given.

One on "How to Prepare a Relish Dish" was given by Sue Green. The other on "Preparation of a Bread" was given by Lolita Vander Vliet. We planned to collect for the Heart Fund. We had two visitors, Sharon Mouw and Elaine Meerdink. 'A delicious lunch was served by Sue Green and Lolita Vander Vliet.
