As teacher of dramatics at the Dramatic School of New York, Hester was one of the organizers of the American School of the Air, and conducted broadcasts weekly. The Black Pit In which Hester Is currently making a bid for Broadway fame, reveals how the miners of the Patch in a West Virginia coal vein daily risk asphyxiation and explosion to eke out a pitiable existence in mines which the author says should be the property of society, not of coal barons. Joe Kovarsky, a Slovak youth, who Is a firebrand, has been framed on a charge of dynamiting the mine during the last strike.

He Is sent to the penitentiary for three years. When he returns he finds that his brother has been crippled In a mine accident, and that his sister-in-law and two children, and his chair ridden neighbor, Tony Lakavitch, a pitiable figure, are starving. As the wife of the chair ridden miner, Hester has won critical praise from New York reviewers. Richard Lockrldge In Amusements, says of her work: Hester Sondergaard does much to make her character convincing, more convincing possibly than the play." "Hester Sondergaard' portrayal as the wife of Tony la one that rings eminently true, says the Women's Wear Dally. "Hester Sondergaard and the remainder of the cast, generally, are to be saluted for their performances.

The only pity Is that they cannot be seen In a piay that does not shout for sympathy, the New York American said. John Anderson in the New York Evening Journal had this to say of Miss Sondergaard and the "Black Martin Wolfson provides a shrewdly drawn picture of a chair-ridden miner and Hester Sondergaard quietly makes an admirable study of his wife.
