LEAGUE RUMMAGE SALE The Madison League of Women Votsponsor a rummage sale Sat- TAPANESE civilization has always been essentially aristocratic, and in the olden times appreciation of art was confined to the upper class of society, but in the 17th century it began penetrating to the lower classes as well, according! to the M.

T. Yamamoto, American correspondent for the Japan Times and Mail, Tokyo, told the Woman's club today. As a result an art suited to the taste of the masses of people came into existence. The "ukiyoye" school and the school of Korin are the products of this period, Yamamoto declared. Sketching briefly some outstanding figure in the Japanese art world, he described Hokusai, the leader of the "ukiyoye" artists, who changed his home 93 times in his 90 years of life because it was easier to move than to clean house.

"His vigorously and spontaneously painted pictures represent subjects of all kinds and sparkle with his brilliant personality," Mr. Yamamoto said. "He was critical and never followed blindly." Touching the general theory of Japanese art, Mr. Yamamoto stated that when the Japanese artist paints, he sees his subject through his imagination, and gives a fantastic representation of life colored by his visions rather than a concrete portrayal of his model.
