Dual meets take on significance as track heads to the finish line By John Devine The Californian With four weeks remaining until the Mission Trail and Monterey Bay League track championships, the dual meet season is taking on more significance.

Individuals who haven't qualified for the league finals have only three dual meets in which to try and extend their seasons. A battle of unbeaten teams takes place in King City Thursday when the Mustangs entertain Carmel and York. King City and Carmel are both 2-0 in the boys' division. Carmel is expected to dominate the distance events and hurdle races, while the Mustangs have an advantage in the throwing and jumping events. The best race of the day could be the 100-meter dash.

King City's Tim Davis and Carmel's R.J. Powell are both unbeaten in the 100 at dual meets. It could all come down to the relay races. In dual meets, a win in a relay is worth five points. Second place gets you a goose egg.

King City has not lost a girls' MTAL dual meet in eight years. The Mustangs are strongest in the hurdles and throwing events. Teri Velasco and Nancy Flores have dominated the hurdle events. Sharron Harrington and Brandi Schmidt are a formidable one-two punch in the shot put. Two-time defending MTAL champion Palma and Notre Dame entertain Robert Louis Stevenson and Pacific Grove at Hartnell College.

The Chieftains have shown depth in the hurdles and sprints. In four dual meets, Palma has swept the 110-meter high hurdles. David Sargenti is unbeaten in the 110 highs while Jeremy Gonzalez has run every league opponent in the 300 intermediates. Defending MTAL champion Claudia Pizarro is rounding into form in the long jump. The Notre Dame junior has a best of 17-0.

Freshman teammate Erica Barragan is unbeaten in the 100 and 200. Unbeaten North Salinas faces its biggest test in the boys' division Thursday when it entertains Monterey. The Vikings are 3-0 while Monterey is 2-1, having lost to unbeaten Hollister. Injuries have slowed the Toreadores in the sprints, hurdles and jumps. North Salinas' Luis Granado has knocked 25 seconds off his time in the last three weeks.

Another weapon is Eric Knight in the triple jump and pole vault. Salinas will try to keep its league title hopes flickering in the girls' division when it visits Hollister. Salinas' (2-1) only loss was to Gilroy by a point. But the Cowgirls bounced back by beating Monterey. Gilroy still has to face off with the Toreadores.

North County, which has won 73 straight boys' dual meets, faces its biggest challenge two weeks from now when it entertains Santa Cruz. The Condors, with Prep Report's top ranked boys' and girls' track teams, will look to stay sharp this week when they meet Gilroy in a non-league meet. The Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League championships are May 9 at Soquel. 64. Mike Bunsey, Chapel Hill, N.C., 2:28:01.
