school civic industry and business meetings so he knows what people are thinking about in the traffic safety field What the council did following complaints of discrimination by merchants was to repeal ordinance 54480 which made it an automatic offense to cross a street other than in a crosswalk in the central traffic district This is the area from Sixth street to Truman road Oak street to Wyandotte street But still very much in force is ordinance 58510 which provides that every pedestrian crossing a street other than in a crosswalk shall yield the right of way to all vehicles THIS means that a pedestrian crossing in midblock whether downtown or anywhere else is in violation if he causes a motorist to slow down swerve or stop to avoid striking him Kohler said And crossing in midblock advisable anywhere he added The pedestrian traffic record in fact has improved considerably along with the over-all traffic pattern from the deplorable toll of 1960 when 32 pedestrians were killed So far this year there have been only two deaths as against 10 at this time in 1960 Injuries have numbered 39 as against 81 a year ago Last year's tragic mark prompted an intensified police
