The South Bend Tribune, Saturday, June 9, 1979 The hit-and-miss of TV production By Tom Jory NEW YORK (AP) While the TV networks were busy putting together their fall time schedules, Lee Rich was playing a waiting game. "We know we've got three programs renewed for next season," said Rich, president of Lorimar Productions, lat month while the networks were mulling over cancellations and renewals, "but for the rest of our shows, we've just got 1 to wait until they decide. While they do that, we're working on new ideas all the The Waltons, which recently completed its seventh season on CBS, is perhaps the biggest success for Lorimar, one of the industry's most prominent independent producers. The firm also produces Eight is Enough for ABC and Dallas for CBS. All three will return in the fall.

IT IS, INDEED, a chancy business. Lorimar spent about $100 million in the last fiscal year to produce the three programs as well as the moderately successful Kaz, which lasted a full season, and several others that did not The Waverly Wonders with Joe Namath, Married: The First Year and Flatbush. At the same time, Lorimar provided the networks with at least three major miniseries, "Studs Lonigan" for NBC, "Mr. Horn" for CBS and the upcoming "A Man Called Intrepid," also for NBC. Rich spent several years in advertising, including 13 with Benton Bowles, at the time TV's leading agency.

He helped set up Mirisch-Rich Productions, returned briefly to advertising, and with Merv Adelson organized Lorimar in Feburary 1969. Lorimar's credits include several specials "Sybil" with Joanne Woodward and Sally Field, "Helter Skelter" on the Manson murders, "Eric," and "Green Eyes" starring Paul Winfield. "THERE ARE SO many factors that determine whether a show will make it or not," says Rich, "and despite the fact you make shows as good as you can, you have no control over a lot of the other considerations, like pre-emptions, the schedule and things like that. "We thought Kaz was an- outstanding program" the critics, for the most part, did, too "but the show was pre-. empted nine times.

That didn't give it much of a Lorimar's job is, to interest the networks in ideas for programs or series, negotiate contracts for production and provide the shows on time. "We try for as broad a range of programming as we can," says Rich, "but we seem to end up for the most part with people-type shows. Right now we're trying to expand our base, to get more into comedy and certain kinds of dramatic situations for next year." RICH ISN'T ABOUT to lay out Lorimar's plans for the the next several years, but he says the company has a Dallas-type program on the boards, "lower-income, more realistic situa-. tions," and "a story about a father-son relationship." The secret to Lorimar's success? "You've got to guess pretty well," Rich says, "try to figure out what the public is looking for and what will sell. "I wish there was a formula.

I guess it's more a feel for what the people want. I can't put my finger on it." Kuhn says cablecasts hurt baseball's gate WASHINGTON (UPI) Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn says cable television's freedom to pick up distant games for rebroadcast cuts deeply into ticket sales for major league home games. In fact, Kuhn charged, the gate may be reduced enough to force some clubs into bankruptcy unless Congress passes legislation to give them control over the telecasting of their games. "Congress should not await an before acting," he said.

The charges were disputed by Robert Schmidt, president of the National Cable Television Association, who said professional baseball was in "good health" but that Kuhn was suffering from "paranoia." Kuhn demanded that cable TV get the consent of program producers and pay more for what it picks up for. rebroadcast, while Schmidt urged continuation of the present system under which only modest payments are made to copyright owners. Everett H. Erlick, senior vice president of American Broadcasting Companies, said there was "a pressing need for antisiphoning to prevent the shift of many sports events from free television to pay cable TV. At present, he said, cable TV gets a "massive federal subsidy" through the licensing system and by paying only "token" compensation to copyright holders.
