In January, a city consultant suggested reducing Fourth Street from five lanes to three lanes between Cedar Avenue and Sixth Street as a traffic calming" measure. The report also suggested adding sidewalks, crosswalks and improving some of the intersections. City council has not approved the plan and currently doesnt have the funds to start the project. Council has considered adding pedestrian crossings to make the street safer. This does not address the reality of the neighborhood, said Adrienne Annecchini, who acted as the spokesperson for the group.

By HOWARD Capitol Medu Services PHOENIX Gov. Jan Brewer, who developed an international reputation for her vociferous attacks on illegal immigration, is ending her career as an elected politician at the end of the year. But shes not retiring from politics. Brewer made the formal announcement this morning at Park Meadows Elementary School in north Phoenix. She chose the site because it is where two of her children went and, as a parent, she first got interested in politics and considered running for school board.

But Brewer instead took advantage of an offer by her husband, John, to finance a 1982 campaign for the Arizona House. And almost 26 years later from the date she became a legislator, Brewer slid into the office of governor a post See BREWER. A3 Phase I funding of Ilushmaslcr OKd By DAILY SUN STAFF Funding for the improvements to Bushmaster Park may be just around the corner. The city of Flagstaff announced it will be issuing $6.6 million in bonds at the end of the month. Around $1.1 million of the bond money is slated be used to enhance Bushmaster Park.

The improvements to Bushmaster will be split into two phases. The bonds will pay for the first phase of the project. The first phase will include several new ramadas and a new parking lot on the east side of the park. There are also plans for a walking path, fitness area and new playground. The first phase is expected to cost about $1.2 million.

The money will come from the 1996 parks and recreation bond. The second phase will cost about $432,000. That phase will include two smaller ramadas on the east side, an exercise course and a roller rink. There is also talk of a community garden and an access gate on the south side. See BUSHMASTER.

During that time, a large section of grass will be fenced and off-limits to everyone, including all the other weekend events planned throughout the summer. OConnor said the replanting was happening during those months to take advantage of Flagstaffs wet season.

My goal is to maintain the turf in that park," Zimmerman said. For some of these multi-day events, Ive got to shut off the water. It causes damage to the park. After this summer, there will be no more revelers treading on the grass at Wheeler Park during multi-day festivals. The city of Flagstaff believes the downtown lawn cant handle the abuse, and it will close most of Wheeler Park for luly and August this year to replant sod.

That park was not designed as an event facility, and thats why we have issues with the number of people in there, and we have turf damage," said City of Flagstaff Parks Manager Steve Zimmerman. We dont have this going on at any of our other parks." Zimmerman said that maintenance staff realized they weren't giving the grass three weeks of rest between multi-day events, as specified in the parks management plan. And his office has the power to deny permits for maintenance reasons, he said. City officials decided to approach Pride in the Pines and Hullabaloo to tell them they could either move their festivals this year or move them next year. But the events with more seniority and less traffic will be allowed to stay.

That includes Art in the Park on Labor Day and the Fourth of July, as well as other one-day events.
