White, who lived successfully in both her native Hopi culture and white culture, died Dec.

6, at Phoenix Indian Hospital. She was 98. Ms. White spent 30 years teaching in Bureau of Indian Affairs Schools on the Hopi Reservation and was the author of several books describing traditional Hopi life and making the transition between the two cultures. Upon retirement from teaching, Ms.

White renewed a lifelong interest in the ancient Hopi art of pottery-making and created pieces displayed in private collections and several major museums throughout the United States. She had lived for many years in Flagstaff where she was instrumental in founding the Hopi Student Scholarship Fund at Northern Arizona University. In the months prior to her death, she had been a resident of a care center in Phoenix. A memorial service will be conducted Monday, 11 a.m., at Sun Valley Baptist Church, Scottsdale. Traditional Hopi burial will take place Wednesday in the cemetery at Kykotsmovi.

Ms. White was not certain of her actual birth date. Hospital records at the time of her death showed she was born April 9, 1892, in the ancient village of Old Oraibi. She was born with the tribal name Qoyawayma and was a member of the Coyote Clan. After attending reservation missionary schools, Mrs.

White graduated from Bethel College, a Menonite school in Newton, 1 Kans. She retired from teaching in 1954 and was given the U.S. Department of the Interior Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her long career in Indian education. Following retirement, she began writing of her life on the reservation and as a Hopi who successfully had made the transition between cultures. The result was three books, "No Turning Back," "The Sun Girl" and "The Ancient People" that are considered classics in their genre.

Her pottery has been displayed regularly at Museum of Northern Arizona and at the Heard Museum in Phoenix. The Phoenix museum awarded her its Gold Medal in recognition of her artistic accomplishment. Survivors are a brother, Alfred P.Q. Colton; three nephews and two nieces. The family has requested memorial contributions to the Hopi Student Scholarship Fund, NAU, P.O.
