The Sunday Regr iter C5 SHREWSBURY. SUNDAY, JULY 3. 1 977 Ruffini has it ether Brogle has many shirtless friends 5 By LIKE FORREST Veteran kegler Joseph Lupe" Ruffini has put together another 700 set on games of 224-268-222 for a league high series of 714. Bowling this summer in the 13th season of the 14 two-man team Nordy Aschettino Memorial League Ruffini had his best night of the short season. It Isnt that Lupe Ruffini is an old-timer, but there are lots of ole-timers that remember way back the bowling prowess of this tough kegler.

Ruffini was honorably inducted into the Monmouth County Hall of Fame some years ago. After he bowled his 714 series, I asked Lupe how many 700s he has bowled in his career. Another 700 set didnt seem to be too much of an accomplishment for this veteran. Well over a hundred" he said, unwilling to establish a guess. I asked if 120 or 130 might be a good guess.

He agreed with a nod and repeated, Well, over a hundred, I know that. Ruffini remembers his highest set of 791. That was the season Gino Straniero rolled the County high series of 793 right on Ruffinis home lanes. This summer Ruffini is teamed up with the Actor A1 Van Vliet whos every ball is some kind of dramatic climax. Even in disaster, Van Vliet dies a thousand deaths and has an undeba-table explanation of every disaster he runs into.

However, with A1 as the color man of the team, averaging 188, Ruffini has caught fire and rolled his 714 and then followed with a 265-214-640 to lift his current 30-game average to 192, after a rather sluggish start. The league leading team of Lynn Scarano and Bob Bazydlo hold a slim 1-point lead over two teams tied for second. Bob Bazydlo leads the league with his 30-game average of 205. Steve Grasso put a string of strikes together a few weeks age to post the leagues season-high game of 279. Up until Ruffinis 714, Ed Karlbon had the best series total of 690 followed by a 681 shot by both Bob Bazydlo and Bill Walker, Jr.

The Ruffini-Van Vliet combination hold the top two-man team series total of 1303. That happened when A1 Van Vliet had a 589 to go along with. Lupes714. St. Louis ABC Draws The latest word from Jerry ABC Tournament Manager, announced that all 6,182 team reservations have been filled for the 1978 ABC National Championships to be held in the St.

Louis Convention Center scheduled to begin FeB 18. Monmouth County always has a good representation at this annual event, as well as sending its' Masters Champion to the ABC Masters scheduled for April 29-May 3. Testing Research Center Ready A key meeting between officials of the Bowling Proprietors Association of America and the -American Bowling Congress to outline immediate goals for the new testing and research facility located behind Bowling a dq ari V- has taken place, 4 Rex Golobic of San Francisco, chairman of the Products and Equipment Committee, reaffirmed that the top priority should continue to be a search or answers to the problems involving lane finishes and dressing. Other testings will be undertaken in the following areas: (1) Safety factors with respect to materials used in the game, such as lane resurfacing' products; (2) Amount of damage caused by penetration of oil into the lanes; (3) Ball hardness problems, those hardness variations caused by temperature changes, and (4) Interaction of ball hardness with lane finishes of different hardness. This unique test facility was just recently dedi i cated in ceremonies with guests on hand from the BPAA Products and Equipment Committee, the ABC Equipment Testing and Research staff, along with the scientific consultants retained by ABC.

Most of these tests should prove to be most beneficial to proprietors as it relates to the day-to-day operation of bowling centers. A discussion of lane inspections around the country was held. A stressed point was made that in addition to inspections made after honor scores were rolled other checks are to be undertaken by local or ABC staff personnel when the scoring in a center seems to rise above normal levels. fast unmer pace. Each team jolls two matches each week. The first match is always a bumper position match followed by a regular scheduled match. The two-man team pace is fast and a 6-game grind can do a lot to chum up the standings each week. The pace is practically the equivalent of a winter season.

The schedule calls for 90 games within a 15-week span. The only unfortunate part of this schedule is a 7-point gimmick. The extra point in each match goes to the team with the highest three-game total. A Classic handicap system that always buries a weak team within one-quarter of a season sooner. It never fails.

By JONNI FALK Rl'MSON Everytime a member of a crew team steps into his shell, he is literally betting his shirt. Paul Brogle of Rumson is luckier Ihan most. He lost his shirt only once. Taking the opponents shirt is the traditional symbol of victory in crew, and Pauls only loss in three years of rowing for the University of Pennsylvania lightweight crew was to Harvard in the finals of the Eastern Sprints this year. I have quite a collection of shirts from other teams at home, and I didnt bother to wash the one 1 lost," Paul laughed.

However, crew is anything but a laughing matter. Pennsylvania was the first college to compete in rowing, and it is the oldest sport at the school, dating back to 1760. Therefore, its traditions are sirong and its roots run deeper than the waters the shells usually ply. In crew, you are definitely part of a team, Paul explained. You cant let down at all.

You are directly tied in with everybody else, and everything has to be the same with everybody ip the shell. You become as unified asteam outside the as fet. Paul, who had played some football at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional, had never been in a shell before he entered the U. of P. But (hat Is common in crew; few high schools participate in the sport, so it has to be taught from the water up in college.

I had seen crew in the Olympics, and I mainly was looking for a sport where I wouldnt have to do much running because I had had a foot operation after my junior year in high school, Paul said. Crew looked like the kind of sport I as looking for. Paul rowed on the heavyweight crew his freshman year but spent the next three on the lightweight squad. I couldn't bulk up enough to remain a heavyweight," Ije said. We had one guy who was 6-9, 225." As a member of the lightweight crew, he encountered the reverse problem, keeping the weight down.

A lightweight eight has to average 155 pounds with a maximum of 160 pounds a man during the season. The U. of P. lists Paul at 160, but he said he normally weighed in at 156. One of the most arduous of all sports, crew makes stern demands on its participants.

We worked out a lot to keep the weight down, Paul continued. We usually ran nine miles each day, especially when the river was frozen, and in the spring we had double practices. Part of that was doing stadium steps at 6:30 a m. before classes." Regattas for the eights are usually 2,000 meters, and no crew can win without stern conditioning. "At the end of the race, most of the guys were either throwing up or half dead," Paul went on.

Things would always get a little fuzzy for me, but we are usually in pretty good condition, so you recover fast. I have lost five pounds in one race, and that is in just a little over six minutes." In addition to conditioning, technique plays a big role in crew. On an eight, the best technicians are usually in the stroke (number eight) and number seven seats. The power is in the middle of the shell, and Paul rowed number five for the Quakers. There is an old adage in crew that the oarsman with good technique will beat out the strong man Matalvo sparks Joey Miles PAUL BROGLE The synchronization und timing come from hours of practice spe nt in the tank.

Once the race starts, the crew will have to propel a fiberglass shell, 6' 5 feet long and 220 pounds, through all kinds of water and wind conditions faster than the other teams. We usually start a race at 45 strokes a minute. Paul said, to get that fast start. The body of the race i probably about 39 strokes. Another boat be doing 39 and still beat you just out of sheer strength or better technique.

Some! imes races are won at the beginning by gettin out fast. Because water ami wind conditions vary so much, there are no world records or official times in crew. It. is strictly a matter of outpulling the other sl.iells. "It is always race to row on your home course Paul mused.

"You are used to the conditions, but the main thing is that you know the landmarks and can tell where you are. A race ca go fromfive to nine minutes depending ori water and wind, and we had one race cancelled because of the conditions. The rougher the conditions, the harder it is for the crew stay together." Crew had long been a mans sport, but not only are ther now girls teams, the male shells frequently use a girl as coxswain in order to save weight. Pennsylvania used a girl in the stem last year. However, there are still a few bastions of male domination which do not.

A study cd former college rowers indicates that they stick together more closely after graduation than athletes from any other sport. In half of the equipment used1 by the Quakers' crew teams has been donated by the Friends of Pennsylvania Rowing, a club for graduate oarsmen and women. Another tradition is that the former college rower continues to look for a seat in a shell after he enters private life. That seems to hold true for Paul, too. He is now working for Western Union, but he is thinking of the New York Athletic Club program as the next place to dip his oars.

A team might score only five or six runs a game for a while, but could end up scoring 20 or more in games once they get going, Goodwin said.

League ground rules say all fences must be 10 feet high and 300 feet from home plate, the arc of the pitch must be between three and 10 feet and bases must be 65 feet apart. Although many players in the weekend league are moonlighters truck drivers, teachers, factory and office workers Goodwin says the league has attracted some former major leaguers. Former Yankee Curt Blefrey is a player-coach for the Statesmen and former Tiger All-Star Norm Cash plays for Detroit. Milt Pappas, a former standout hurler for the Baltimore Orioles. was signed as manager of the Central Division's Chicago Storm.

Other teams are the Minnesota Goofvs. Mil waukee Copper Hearth. Cincinnati Suds, Cincinnati being a soap product center, Cleveland Jaybirds, Columbus All-Americans and Kentucky Bourbons. The league was chartered last year and its maiden season began in May. Were really serious about this league, Goodwin said, noting a fly-by-night business venture wouldnt have sunk $60,000 into a new score-board at Mercer County Stadium, the Statesmens home park.

Each team is run by professional businessmen and they want to see the league go. There are already plans for expansion next year. Six more teams may come into the league, he said. Players earn about $25 or $30 a game and there are four games two doubleheaders scheduled each weekend, Goodwin said. We travel first class and go to the best hotels when were on the road," he said.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) Imagine a Triple Crown winner in a professional baseball league batting over .700 with 70, 80 or even 100 home runs and more than 200 runs batted in. Sounds far-fetched? Not in the newly formed 12-team American Professional Slo-Pitch Softball League it doesn't. Ken Goodwin, general manager of the Trenton-based New Jersey Statesmen, said Ron Ford of the Detroit Caesars was batting .711 with 36 home runs through 16 games. Theres no telling what his statistics will be at the end of the 56-game schedule." he said.

The Statesmen, in the Eastern Division with the Pittsburgh Hardhats, Baltimore Monuments and New York Clippers, were only 4-12 prior to weekend play, but Goodwin says the team could be in the thick of it when September playoff time comes. The Soviets took first and second places in the women's 100-meter hurdles, the womens' run, the high jump and the discus. But the relatively inexperienced U. At the end of the first days competition Friday, the Americans trailed the ex score of 118-105 and the Soviet women won 89-66.
