Lebanon Daily News, Friday, July 16, 2004 5A: JULY 14TH TORNADO Weather Service rules it was an F-3 twister (From page 1A) tural damage. "We are looking at the top internal wind speed ranging somewhere from 175 to 200 mph, which puts it into the F-3 category on the Fujita scale, (which) estimates wind speed based on the damage that occurs," Ondrejik said. We saw multiple homes that where totally destroyed with nothing but foundations Homes that remained standing but sustained serious damage, like losing a wall or roof, were probably hit with peripheral winds between 70 and 80 mph, according to Ondrejik. Much of the damage was pushed inward, he said, another indication that a tornado touched down. About two dozen residents of the area were hurt, one seriously, officials said.

Jody Lenington reportedly suffered broken ribs, a lacerated liver, a hairline skull fracture and other, more minor injuries. She was admitted to the Hershey Medical Center in critical condition, but her updated condition was not available this morning. The timing of the tornado, when many people were at work, may have limited the number of injuries, officials said. The issuing of a tornado warning at 2:56 p.m. by the National Weather Service also helped.

The nine minutes between the warning and the tornado was longer than it is on average for most tornadoes in the state, Ondrejik said. "The national average for lead time is 12 minutes. And those are based on our big tornadoes in Oklahoma, where you can get a lot of lead time," he said. "In Pennsylvania, it is actually very, very difficult to get more than three to four or five minutes of lead time. We have very difficult tornadoes to forecast." Wednesday's conditions were ripe for a tornado, Ondrejik said, because the weather supplied the three necessary ingredients: moisture in the air, instability created by warm air at the earth's surface and cooler temperatures higher in the atmosphere, and a weather front in this case, a mass of warm air that blew through the region.

June and July are also the peak tornado months in the state, although spring tornadoes are usually more severe, Ondrejik said. "When I came into work (Wednesday) morning we knew we were going to have some severe weather," he said. Although no one he spoke to reported seeing a funnel-shaped cloud that is characteristic of tornadoes, Ondrejik said it was there. "You would see a rotating column of air, but nobody actually saw it," he said. "In.

some respects I'm glad for that because they took shelter and went for safety instead of watching it." County Commissioner Jo Ellen Litz snapped this shot of the damage during a helicopter tour over the area Wednesday evening. Survivors clean up (From page 1A) father quickly dug him out, and Nicholas suffered only scrapes and bruises. The scene was much the same all over the neighborhood as people began to salvage what they could from their homes. Cindy Farkas' family and friends were helping her clean out what was left of her home. She said she was at work in Hershey when the tornado hit.

She has two cats; both survived. She said she found one Wednesday night and the other yesterday morning, under her bed, which was buried under insulation ripped from the house's walls or roof. Farkas' sister, Amy, drove down from State College yesterday to help out. She said when she saw the house, she started to cry. Their parents had owned the house and sold it to Cindy in January.

"I couldn't believe it," Amy said. "I lived in this house while I was going to college." Next door, where Jerry and Jody Lenington had lived, there was no house; just a basement full of rubble and a car in the driveway. Jody's daughter, Lois Novosel of Cornwall, picked through the rubble. Novosel said her daughter had tried to get to the basement as the storm hit but didn't make it in time. "If she had made it to the basement, she would have been OK," she said.

Instead, she said, her daughter ran into a firstfloor bathroom with her dog a 55-pound cockapoo named Henly and held onto the toilet as the tornado pulled the house apart around her. The storm passed and Jody, critically injured, managed to crawl with Henly under the car. She yelled for help. A nextdoor neighbor, whose home also was torn away, ran to her aid. "She's alive.

That's what's important," Novosel said. Jody Lenington suffered broken ribs, a cut to her liver, a skull fracture and other injuries, her daughter said. She was admitted to Hershey Medical Center in critical condition. Novosel said the family was sifting through the rubble to salvage what they could. Among the items found was Jody's diamond wedding ring.
