Wohien PHILADELPHIA (AP) Joe Frazier winner of the Olympic heavyweight boxing championship in Tokyo last October, faces a bleak Christmas. He is hurting both physically and financially. The 21-year-old Philadelphia slaughterhouse employee said he has not received a pay check since the first week in September when he left for the Olympic training camp at Hamilton Air Force Base near San Francisco, Frazier won four bouts in the Olympics to become the first American heavyweight champion since Pete Rademacher in 1956, But in his semifinal bout against Russias Vadim Yemslanov, he broke his left thmb.

He fought with the broken thumb and de feated Hans Buber of Germany in the final. His hand was in a cast for almost two months. He returned Monday to Hahnemann Hospital, where three pins that held the bone in place were removed. A new cast was put on. The injury has prevented him from returning to his job.

His savings account is almost de-pleated. Frazier did, however, receive a gift of $100 from the firm he works for two weeks ago. He used some of the money to buy gifts for his wife, Florence, and his three children, Marvis, 4, Jacqueline, 3, and Weatta, 1. I got them some gifts, he said. It wasnt very much but I wanted to let the kids know that daddy is still around.

I may be helpless now, but I couldnt forget them. Hamilton West and Cathedral join Trenton and CBA (2-0) in the unbeaten ranks, so the play on the Trenton court Monday should be outstanding. Wed like to see CBA, coached by Vincent Cox, get by Trenton in the opening game and meet Cathedral in the title game. The tilt would be a natural. Both teams depend on a pressing defense rather than an over powering offense. CBA showed that last Sunday when the Colts ball-hawked Red Bank Catholic, not a bad team, to the tune of 97-44.

If you wonder about the Cathedral squad, dont worry. The same afternoon Cathedral stole the ball 16 times in the first quarter and moved out to a 40-9 thats correct, 40 to 9 lead against St. Marys of South Amboy. So that leaves us with a total of 18 basketball games to be played by local schools from Saturday to next Wednesday. And to think high school coaches used to worry about inactivity over the Christmas holidays.
