Raavaa 1-3, It (I INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The most useless piece of equipment at the annual McDonalds All American basketball game was the 45-second shot clock. The East and West teams, representing 20 of the top high school seniors in the nation, combined for 204 shots one every 11.8 seconds and the Easts speed overcame the Wests size for a 115-104 victory.

We wanted an up-pace game," said the Easts Clifford Rozier, who had 22 points and eight rebounds in Sundays nationally televised game at Market Square Arena. They were too big for us to slow down the game. Theyre so physical, so intimidating. Rozier, no midget himself at 6-feet-10, was one of four North Carolina recruits in the game. He had 15 points in the second half as the East came back from a 3-point halftime deficit.

The Wests 7-6 Shawn Bradley and 7-0 Eric Mon-tross combined for 10 of their teams 13 blocked shots, but the East controlled the game with 22 steals, including 10 by Khalid Reeves. We had plays set all week run this, run that I dont think we ran the plays 10 times the whole Aaaociatad Prwa These three old guys were play tag It could be the start to a funny story. 1 But in this case, the three old guys were Hall of Famers, three of the best ever to play the game; Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Gary Player. However, there was nothing funny about the way they struggled through the final round Sunday of the 51st PGA Seniors Championship in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Player won it, leading all the way In the final 18 holes.

It was his third PGA Seniors title, joining the trophies he won in 1986 and 88. The trophy is nice. The check is nice. But to know youve won beating Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino, thats something to cherish all your life," Player-said. He won it despite three-putting from two feet on the second hole.

He won it despite a double bogey from the yfeter on the 16th. He won it by two strokes with a closing round of 73, one over par. And be won it with the aid of Nicklaus and Trevino, the only two men who had a realistic chance of overtaking him. Nicklaus missed a putt from three feet on the second hole, from five feet on the third, from four on the eighth, from three on the 10th. And he yanked a drive into the water.

Trevino also got one wet on fifth. His mistake on the sixth was even more embarrassing. He took a back-handed swipe at a tap-in putt He whiffed it, completely missed the ball That doesnt help, Nicklaus said. I never made anything happen, Nicklaus said of his sudden putting problems. Lee never made any-.

thing happen. We just never got anything going. As a result. Player didnt have to. He started the final round with a 5-stroke lead, built it to six at the turn and had four strokes in hand with three holes to go when the second of two storm delays late in the day threatened an overnight postponement When play resumed in the late afternoon, he promptly hit one into the water and made double bogey.

But it didnt matter. He brought it home from there. And he brought it home In total darkness and drizzling rain, putting out on the 18th more than six hours after he, Nicklaus and Trevino left the first tee. I was like Ray Charles playing those last three holes, Player said. Players 15th victory in Seniors Tour competition, and first of the season, was worth $75,000 from the total purse of $450,000.

Chi Chi Rodriguez, who started the final round with a 9-shot deficit, came on to take second at 283 after the best round of the stormy day, a 66. Nicklaus and Trevino tied for third at 285, four back of the winner. Nicklaus, playing in a rare third consecutive event, made only one birdie in a round of par 72. At Hilton Head Island, S.C., Payne Stewart birdied two playoff holes to beat Larry Mize and Steve Jones on Sunday and become the first winner of consecutive Heritage Classics. Stewart, who started the day two strokes in front, nearly had a hole-in-one on No.

17, the first playoff hole, but Mize preceded Stewarts tap-in by sinking his 8-foot birdie putt Jones was eliminated after pushing his tee shot into the crowd. Stewart, who struggled to an even-par 71, won with a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-4, 484-yard 18th. Mize just missed his 20-foot putt for birdie, giving Stewart his first playoff victory in six tries. In Mougins, France, Ian Woos-nam of Wales shot rounds of 72 and 67 Sunday and took a 1-shot lead after three rounds of the rain-delayed Cannes Open. Woosnam shot an even-par 72 in the morning, then had a 67 over the Mougins course to finish at 8-under-par 208, one better than Mark McNulty of Zimbabwe and Mark It' (4.

Reeves, a 6-foot-3 guard from Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village, N.Y., was named most valuable player. Norm Held, the West coach, said the Easts quickness was too big an advantage. But you cant use the 45-second clock in a game like this, Held said.

They definitely had quickness on their side. They know theyre in an all-star game. They want to show their wares," he said. We could have slowed it down, but I dont think it would have been much fun for anybody. Damon Bailey, Indianas Mr.
