wm 4 2 3 5 The Daily Register SHREWSBURY, N.J. TUESDAY. DECEMBER 7, 1982 MAKE A DATE COMICS i r.r Todd bombs weak Lions 11-0 Knights grab Register grid title NFL standings C8 -4 By RICH NICOLETTI Register Sports Editor WALL It was a nice year a pleasant year I didnt think wed get this far. John Amabile, the Wall Township High School football coach, reflected on the the havoc his Crimson Knights had wreaked on both the Shore Conference Division South and the Central Jersey Group HI tournament. Once we got rolling I thought maybe we could have a big year, Amabile said.

Wall, the bridesmaid all season long to Middletown North, caught the bouquet on the last day of the season by dumping South Plainfield, 21-0, in the CJ Group HI finale. The Knights will receive The Daily Registers Monmouth County Football Cham Roister photo by Don Lord! HAPPY WITH RESULTS Wall Township football caoch John Amabile appears happy with the results (above) after watching the likes of running back Art Petracco (below) as Wall wraps up the Central Jersey Group III crown against South Plainfield. PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) Richard Todd threw for 384 yards and connected with Wesley Walker for three touchdowns as the New York Jets raced to their fourth straight National Football League victory, a 28-13 triumph over the petroit Lions Monday night. After a 31-yard field goal by Eddie Murray gave the Lions an early 3-0 lead, yookie Dwayne Crutchfield circled left end from a yard out to give the Jets a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Then Todd, who completed 23 of 32 passes, went to work with his speedy wide receiver, working primarily on Detroit cornerback Wayne Smith. I' First, operating from his own 44, Jodd tossed a short pass to Walker at jhe Detroit 42. Walker, who caught five passes for 164 yards, spun away from Smith and ran into the end zone for a 56-Sard touchdown that put the Jets ahead 34-3. A few minutes later, Todd hit Walker, wide-open ahead of Smith at the goal 3ine to complete at 41-yard touchdown Slay and give the Jets a 21-3 halftime jjead. The Todd-Walker combination completed the scoring early in the fourth quarter with a 19-yard connection.

It -oame after the Lions had closed a 21-3 Saiftime deficit to 21-13. 4 1 The Lions, who dropped their third Successive game since the end of the 57--aay players strike after winning two 'pre-strike games, got their only touchdown on a 48-yard bomb from Gary 'anielson to Mark Nichols in the third Quarter. Murray added a 22-yard field 3al in the fourth quarter for the other 3bints. I They bad a chance to come even oser when Todd was sacked and mbled and the ball was recovered by troit linebacker Stan White on the 1-ard line after a scramble. But two plays later, Detroits Billy Sims, trying to jump over the pile, fumbled and Ken pionship plaque tomorrow night at the papers All-County Dinner at the Olde Union House Restaurant in Red Bank.

I felt sad for Vic (Kubu, Middletown North coach), Amabile said. "He worked so hard with those kids. Kubu and the Lions lost, 28-19, to a superb J.P. Stevens of North Edison team in the finals of Central Jersey Group IV after winning their first 10 games. That opened the door for Amabiles boys who dev as ted most pf their competition.

Neptune was the only regular-season foe that made it interesting for Wall, losing, 17-0. All told, the Knights shut out seven of their 11 opponents. What made the season for Wall? It was a combination of things, Amabile said. I knew we had great skill people coming back, even though they didnt have much experience. Bobby (Amabiles son who played quarterback and linebacker), Art Petracco (running back) and Greg Panasuk (running back) gave us dimension.

Basically, I knew I had a lot of guns going, but I still wasnt sure of the offensive line. We also had to rebuild the defensive line. Amabile knew that the first game of the year would set the tone for the entire season. That first opponent was Manasquan. Manasquan has been a perennial headache for any team with designs on a conference championship.

We figured whoever won that game would go on and take it all. For us it was the-game of the year, Amabile recalled. The Knights not only won that game, they breezed to a 27-0 victory and served noticed that they would be the scourged of the division. They went on to blitz most of the competition. See 11, page C2 Schroy recovered for the Jets on the 4.

Detroit held, and after a punt, moved to a first and goal at the Jet 9, but It had to qettle for Murrays second field goal. A crowd of 79,361 was on hand in the Silverdome, which seats 8Q.638. The Lions said that 80,002 tickets had been sold, meaning there were only 641 no-shows, easily the best attendance here since the end of the strike. The Jets surprised the Lions by going with a no-huddle, hurry-up offense on the opening series, but a fumble by New York running back Freeman McNeil turned the ball over to Detroit, leading to Murrays first field goal. Late in the first quarter, Todd drove the Jets 63 yards in seven plays keyed by an 18-yard toss to Walker from a third-and-8 situation that carried them from the 31 to the 13 and Dwayne Crutchfield crashed over from the 1 to give New York a lead it never gave up.

Todds first bomb to Walker capped a 66-yard, five-play drive. His 41-yard TD toss to Walker was the conclusion of a 57-yard, four-play march. 1 Danielson, who regained his starting position from Eric Hippie after the Lions loss to the New York Giants on Thanksgiving Day, completed 14 of 37 passes for 222 yards with three interceptions The rushing duel between Detroits Billy Sims and the Jets Freeman McNeil never developed. Sims carried 12 times for 43 yards while McNeil had 49 yards on 16 carries. The bomb from Danielson to Nichols was the first second-half touchdown the tough Jets defense had yielded since their opening-day defeat to the Miami Dolphins.

SATISFIED QB Bob Amabile, quarterback for Wall Township High School, is satisfied with the outlook of Saturday's football game against South Plainfield. The 11-0 Knights have won The Daily Register's Monmouth County championship. Its a great disappointment to me to see Willie leave the school and the state, Hauselt said.

Trimmer, who couid not be reached for comment after repeated efforts by phone last night, is expected to return to Ohio. Hauselt refused to reveal Trimmers reasons for leaving. Id be dumbstruck if Willie was less than happy here, Hauselt said. It is believed that Trimipers departure has something to do with his wifes desire to return to her native state. Under Consideration Hauselt said his search for a replacement would begin tomorrow.

Carmine Magnotta, an assistant at Asbury Park and the man Trimmer replaced two years ago, has been mentioned as a possible successor to Trimmer. Magnottas contract was not renewed by the Board of Education two years ago, despite repeated protests from players and students. Magnotta had coached the Spartans for seven years. I would consider anybody, Hauselt said. "I coached with Carmine for a number of years.

Theres no reason not to consider him. Trimmer led the Spartans to a 1-8 season in 1981. His team improved to only 2-7 in 1982, but Hauselt felt Trimmers tenure had been successful. I think the highest of Willie Trimmer as a head coach, he remarked. As athletic director, I can say there has been an immense improvement in the program.

He turned corners in a major way. Theres a new enthusiasm for the sport, the athletes have a tremendous rapport with him, and hes gotten the confidence of the coaches hes played against. Hauselt pointed to the success of the junior varsity team as a product of Trimmers hard work. The jayvee team was 7-1 in 1982, defeating all other Shore Conference Division North opponents. A head coach should be measured by the whole program, Hauselt noted.

The freshman team is a measure of Willies success. Also, we were 2-7 this year, but we were in every game and could easily have had four or five wins instead of just a couple. Trimmer has said part of the reason for the teams improvement was the changeover from a big, lumbering team to a small, fast one. Another reason, however, was the play of senior running back Tom Carter, who last year sat on the bench. He had six touchdowns, including three in the Monmouth Regional game.

Possible Refusal It is possible that the Board of Education will refuse to accept Trimmers resignation, though he is not contractually obligated to continue coaching or teaching in the district. Trimmer teaches business at Ocean Township High School. Im sure they will (accept Trimmers resignation), Hauselt said. But probably with regret. Hauselt expects to begin procedures to replace Trimmer tomorrow, and in addition to Magnotta, members of Trimmers staff are being considered.

Its probably the hardest working staff Ive seen, said Hauselt, who coached as an assistant at Ocean for more than 10 years. Trimmers assitant coaches include Bill Patroski (offensive coordinator), Paul DAloia (defensive coordinator), Tom Pagano (specialty unit), Frank Martuscelli (head freshman coach) and George Christopher (assitant freshman coach). Hauselt indicated, however, that he would be willing to go beyond the school district in order to get the best person for the program. Ocean, which had beaten Howell on the last game of the 1981 season for its only win, surprised Manasquan, 13-0, then topped Monmouth Regional, 28-7, for its two 1982 victories. The team was outscored, 187-88.
