Midway Breaks Full of Color Arizona Mg Suit i Wrestlers Honors Spark Star Halftimes THE SUN, Flagstaff, Ariz. Aug. 12, 1964 By PAUL SWE1TZER AND SAMUEL SEMOFF Halftime ceremonies at both the All-Star basketball and football games this weekend will be filled with as much color and impact as the games themeslves, officials of the Arizona Coaches Association announced today. At the halftime of the big basketball game which begins at 8 p.m., Friday in the ASC Gymnasium there will be a wrestling exhibition featuring the six top prep wrestlers in three weight classes in the state. At the halftime of the football game, which gets underway at 8 p.m.

Saturday on Lumberjack Field, the ceremonies, will center around honors, according to Nymeyera Strokes 38 Charting the Pros jacket from Sorich as part of the evenings ceremonies. Highlight of the Saturday night ceremonies will be the presen tation of this years dedicatee, Martin Mirich, Phoenix College Baseball coach. Mirich, in being chosen as the dedicatee of the Arizona Coaches Association Clinic and the All Star games receives an engraved gold watch for his years of service to athletics in the state. Besides coaching baseball at Phoenix College he has for a number of years been active in the Arizona State Coaches Association and various phases of athletics throughout the state. The remaining presentation will be a watch to Joe Garcia, Phoenix for 15 years of service to the Arizona State Coaches Association.

Garcia served as secretary the All-Star sessions. On Saturday, the halftime cere monies will take on somewhat of a somber tone as Coach Ted Sor-ich of Round Valley High School will be called upon to honor the memory of his star fullback, Don Gardom. Gardom to whom the North team is dedicating its partici pation in the game was due to have been a football All-Star this year, but died on May 15, while attempting to save the life of a 13-year-old Springerville girl who was in trouble on Lyman Lake south of St. Johns. The husky fullback went into the water to try to reach the girl, but went down in 15 feet of water, after a brief struggle.

His body was recovered by a team of divers some eight hours later. On Saturday evening, Gardoms parents, Mr. and Mrs. Preston Gardom, Springerville, will be on hand to receive an All-Star Jiggs Hardt, Central High School Coach in charge of the half time activities for both games. On Friday, in conjunction with the wrestling portion of the Coaching Clinic being held on the ASC campus, six of the top high school grapplers in the state from the 1963-64 season will be on hand to give an exhibition of their talents.

In the heavyweight class, Roger Willis, Snowflake, and Fred Brown, Holbrook, will be the stars; in the 165-pound class Eddy Bohanon, South Mountain and Mike Patterson, the star of the Thunderbird wrestling team of West High, will do the honors; and in the 103-pound class, John Coas-solo, North High, and Jay Rondeau, Arcadia, will perform. Whatever we get out of Moore will help. We also are counting on help from Tony Lorick, our No. 2 draft choice from Arizona State. Lorick at fullback and Ted Davis of Georgia Tech at linebacker are the newcomers with the best chance to fight their way into starting positions. Unitas has his favorite target, Berry, in action at split end and Mackey, touted as a new Mike Ditka, at tight end with Orr at the flanker, Hill at fullback and Matte or Moore at running back.

Willie Richardson backs up Orr and Gary Cuozzo is the second quarterback. With Jim Parker, an allleague ace, at left guard the front offensive line is intact. Bob Vogel and George Preas man the tackles, Parker and Alex Sandusky are he guards and Dick Syzmanski is at center. Defense may present more of a problem to Shulas personnel. The return of Billy Ray Smith, who sat out last year, strengthens one tackle spot, with Miller at the other.

Ordell Braase will be at his old end job. Marcfcet-tis position is the problem. WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP)-Don Shula hopes to get his Bal timore Colts out of the gate in a fast start despite the retirement of Gino Marchetti, the perennial all-National Football League defensive end. Don Thompson, a 6-foot-414 240-pounder in his third year of pro ball, must fill Marehettis shoes if the Colts front four is to hold its own with the other powers.

If Thompson doesnt make it, Shula will have to do some fast shuffling, perhaps moving Fred Miller to the outside. Shula was new to the club himself last year, his first as head coach. He also had to fit eight rookies into the 1963 squad. Veterans will man most of the key positions this season. Johnny Unitas is throwing real sharp, said Shula.

He started slowly last year but he was fantastic in the second half. Unitas is just the best quarterback in football. And that goes for everybody. Well be better off on offense from the start. A year ago we didn't know John Mackey was as good as he is.

We didnt have a fullback until Jerry Hill got going. Raymond Berry and Jimmy Orr were out and Lenny Moore missed half the season. Nymeyera toured the nine-hole layout at the Flagstaff Country Club yesterday in pouring rain and came in with a low gross of 38 to take the championship of the coaches golf tournament, held annually in conjunction with the Arizona Coaches Clinic at Arizona State College here, and the All-Star games program. Nymeyera captured the crown by one stroke over runnerup Hugh Alaspa of Casa Grande who came in with a gross of 39. In all, a total of some 50 coaches attending the coaches clinic here participated in the tourney, abbreviated to nine holes because of the wet weather. But FCC tourney chairman Arman Reinke, who ran the tournament for the coaches, said that most of the scores "were very good, considering the weather they played in. All entries in the tournament received some sort of prize.

The North All-Stars yesterday morning elected Bud Weidoff, Glendale back and Robert Wallac South Mountain end as co-captains, but north Coach A1 Mu-naz said because of the close vote, he decided to make all four boys co-captains.

These four boys will represent the team, Munoz said, but later on he will pick an offensice captain and a defensive captain to speak for the boys on the field. Meantime both teams continued practice for Saturday nights game, as their attention turned to toughtening up the line both on offense and defense. The South will have the larger line, but whether they will be able to hold back the hard running North backfield is the question. Coach Elwood Turner expressed some concern at the end of yesterdays practice over the lack of spirit in the line. The present South defensive line consists of ends Jim Davitch, Salpointe, and Pete aasquez.

Frank Thomas slammed three doubles for his new Philadelphia teammates, driving in (hree runs for a 3-0 lead but the Cubs came back to move in front on homers by Andre Rodgers and Ernie Banks. Callison then broke it up with his grand slam, capping a five-run rally touched off by Gus Triandos homer.

The two homers left the Cubs Ellsworth, 22-game winner last season, with a 12-14 record. Harvey Kuenn collected three doubles for the Giants, triggered three rallies and scored three runs. He came home on Hal Lanier's single in the first and Cepeda followed with his 20th homer. In the third Kuenn scored on Mays 33rd homer and in the seventh he was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Cepeda. Robinson homered in the first for the Reds, then tripled in the fourth and Johnson followed with his homer.

That was enough for Joey Jay, who struck out 13, scattered seven Dodger hits and brought his record to 8-8. The Mets beat their nemisis, Bob Friend, who had a 12-0 lifetime record against the New Yorkers. It was a bad night for the New York Yankees all around. Even Joe DiMaggio was knocked down a peg. While the Chicago White Sox whipped the Yankees in a doubleheader, Milwaukees Hank Aaron whipped past the Yankees Clipper into 14th place on the all time home run list, hammering his 19th and 20th of the season as the Braves walloped Houston 9-6 Tuesday night.

The homers lifted Aaron's career total to 362 one more than DiMaggio and shoved the 30-year-old right-handed swinger into the National League spotlight that has been focusing almost steadily on the tight pennant struggle between Philadelphia and San Francisco. Aarons outstanding performances over the last half of the season have gone virtually unnoticed. but he has been hitting at a .355 clip since June 21 and climbed into the No. 6 spot in the league with a .314 average. In the 48 games over that stretch, he has driven in 45 runs.

While Aaron continued his heavy hitting for Milwaukee, Johnny Callison did the same for league-leading Philadelphia, slugging the first grand slam of the season by the Phillies and adding two doubles in a 13-5 walloping of the Chicago Cubs. The victory kept the Phillies three games in front of the San Francisco Giants, but may have cost them the services of outfielders Cookie Rojas and Tony Gonzalez, the latest additions to an ever-growing injury list Rojas jammed both wrists when he ran into the center field wall chasing a fly ball and Gonzalez, his replacement, was hit on his protective helmet by a Dick Ellsworth pitch. Both players were taken to the hospital, but the injuries were not considered serious.
