A federal jury of eight women and four men deliberated less than an hour before convicting Sasway, who was the first person indicted and becomes the second one convicted of failing to sign up since mandatory registration was reimposed two years ago. U.S. District Judge Gordon Thompson who during the two-day trial prohibited Sasway from explaining his motives for refusing to register, ordered the defendant taken to jailpending sentencing Oct. 4.

He could receive a maximum punishment of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. A Virginia college student, Enten Eller, was convicted in a similar case last week in Virginia and was given three years probation by a judge who ordered him to register for the draft or face prison. Sasway said before his trial began that if he received a similar order from the court, he would not obey it. I feel he is aware of the fact that many of our people have gone to Canada when the chips were down," Thompson said in explaining his reasons for refusing to let Sasway remain free on the $10,000 bond that had been posted before the trial. NAU Radio Station Upgrading on Hold KNAU-FM Radio at Northern Arizona University has revised its timetable to upgrade facilities and convert to a 100,000 watt station. According to Dr. F. Clark Elkins, vice president for University Relations and Development, KNAU-FM had planned to convert from a 10-watt station to a station with better equipment and studios, but has placed the project on hold for the current year. We dont have any alternative but to put the studio project on hold for the time being, said Elkins.

The University had budgeted $50,000 for the studio, but the estimate provided by the architect required $125,000 to $130,000 in funding. "We still are committed to upgrading KNAU into one of the finest FM stations in Northern Arizona, but will have to wait for an improved economic climate." His racing career was going in reverse, until six car-crazy kids joined his pit crew and put him back on the track. KENNY ROGERS is Brewster Bater. Serving Our Country ft: MW.VW.WW.
