Th SUN, Flagstaff, Arizona, Wednesday, June 22. 1977-3 Suicide Probed In Sells Death i 4 An Wrf, I a I 4 i v' Hf vi a Is a i TUCSON (AP) Pima County sheriffs detectives said today that they strongly suspect suicide in the mysterious death of Tucson businessman Charles Curtis Morgan, found shot to death last week. But Morgans widow and a business associate have rejected the idea of suicide, saying there was no reason for it. Detectives said they had not ruled out the chance that he was slain, possibly in a contract killing. Ruth Morgan said some was trying to drive my husband commitably insane in an effort to stifle his business expansion.

She said that could have been a motive to kill him. However, detectives said they reached their suspicions of suicide based on several facts: Where the body was found, 10 feet from U.S. Highway 86 near Sells. The location did not seem to indicate someone was trying to cover up a killing. The discovery of personal papers in Morgans nearby car.

The papers could have been valuable to someone killing him. Means of death. Morgan was shot in the head with a large-caliber bullet and a large-caliber gun was found next to the body. The 39-year-old president of Statewide Escrow Service Inc. was found dead last Saturday, 11 days after he was reported missing.

Investigators said all of the evidence is not conclusive. They said the bullet was too mangled to put through ballistics tests and no fingerprints have been found on the gun. Gould, county farm agent, gave a demonstration on the J.A. Boswell farm in Bill Black Park on the extermination of grasshoppers. Grasshoppers are exceptionally bad in the area this year. Dick Merritt, Yavapai County engineer, passed through Jerome with a group of surveyors on their way to the site of the proposed improved highway to Flagstaff via Morman and Stoneman Lakes. Flagstaff and Northern Arizona were given space in a recent issue of the Arizona Gazette.

Mitchell surrendered today as a prisoner of the federal justice system he once ran as attorney general. He was the 25th man sent to jail for Watergate crimes and probably the last. Mitchell waited until nearly the last minute to begin his 30 month-to-8-year sentence for his part in the Watergate cover-up, unlike H. R. Haldeman who showed up Tuesday a day early at the Lompoc, Calif, minimum security facility, carrying his belongings in a halffull grocery bag.

Mitchell affably greeted reporters waiting at the gate of the Maxwell Air Force Base minimum security prison near Montgomery, with a good morning, gentlemen. He entered the gates at 11:25 a.m. EDT, one hour and 35 minutes before the deadline set by U.S. District Judge John J. Sirica.

He carried nothing with him. Mitchell had landed a few minutes earlier in a private jet at Dannelly Airport and was driven to the prison in a dark blue Cadillac. He wore a dark business suit. Asked if he had anything to the taciturn Mitchell replied with a smile: Yes, indeed. Its nice to be back in Alabama.

It was his only comment. Grandview apparently become involved in a debate in his home with Valverde over loaned money, said police. The gunshot did not cause any injuries. A rattling rear door caused a Flagstaff man to stop his van and discover that five tires and spoke wheels, valued at $168, had been taken from his vehicle. John Hinkle, 45, 502 S. Leroux contacted police shortly after 1 p.m.

Tuesday and reported the loss. Around the rear-door handle scratches and dents were observed, police said. A 60 year-old Phoenix man apparently died of a heart attack at a campground east of Flagstaff. Homer A. Hensley failed to rise when beckoned by companions Tuesday morning and authorities were notified.
