The only conference game scheduled, that between New Mexico and Texas Tech, at Lubbock, will be a day contest. A victory for the Red Raiders will put them in sole possession of third place in the loop standings, a position they now hold jointly with Texas Western. And from the results of last Saturdays games, there is a good chance this will happen. Tech ran rough shod over the hapless University of Arizona Wildcats at Tucson in Arizonas home coming game. Long passes, interceptions and fumbles set up five Red Raider scores as Tech downed Arizona, 39-7.

At the half Texas led 20-0. New Mexico lost in a day game at Albuquerque to Bradley, 20-19. West Texas State, champions of the conference for the first time-wound up conference play by a 47-31 victory over the Cowboys of Hardin Simmons University. This week the champions end their regular season play with a night game at Corpus Christi, West Texas will probably play in the Sun Bowl at El Paso on January 1. Dan Ponder of El Paso, was elected league president to succeed Riney B. Salmon, Phoenix, who refused to accept a third term. Mentioned as possibilities to replace Globe-Miami are: Mesa, Nogales and Yuma, El Centro Las Cruces and Carlsbad N. and Mexicali and Chihuahua, Mexico. None had representatives at the meeting.

RccsDufcVith Guillen Users NEW YORK (AP) Texas is in the Cotton Bowl. Illinois and California are near enough to Iasadena to smell the roses. A dozen other teams are afraid to stray too far from the telephone lest they miss a ring from one of the big post-season promoters. The pluck season is here for college football and the mad scramble is on to fill the 'massive stadia in the warm weather climes with the most glamorous elevens available. Right now the list of unpicked eligibles is headed by Oklahoma and Kentucky, with Tennessee, Miami (Fla.) and Clemson just a shade behind.

Other prospects include Wyoming, Loyola of Los Angeles, Alabama, Southern Methodist, Nebraska, and Tulsa their desirability hinging largely on the outcome of the remaining few games. The bowl picture at the moment shapes up approximately like this: Rose at Pasadena Illinois vs. California. 1 Sugar at New Orleans Kentucky vs. Oklahoma or SMU.

Cotton at Dallas Texas vs. Oklahoma or Tennessee. Orange at Miami Miami vs. Tennessee, Clemson or Wyoming. The game with the most important bowl bearing Saturday is at Knoxville, where unbeaten and untied Kentucky takes on once-defeated Tennessee, a team that perennially gives the Wildcats trouble.

Its reported a Sugar Bowl bid is hanging in the balance. Oklahoma, owning modern footballs longest winning streak of 29 games, will go against Nebraska at Norman and probably can stpn right into any bowl it chooses, with the exception 6f the grand-pannv of them all at Pasadena. Texas clinched the Southwest championship and Cotton Bowl role Saturday by beating Texas Christian, 21-7, while Rice was cooling off the only remaining challenger, Texas 21-13. Foiled in the east, with New Mexico Western taking 28-6 victory Saturday, the Lumberjacks will travel west this coming weekend in a new attempt to gain their third football victory of the season. Opponents for the coming weekend will be the Green Waves of George Pepperdine college at Los Angeles, who will play host for the Lumberjacks Anal engagement of the season.

The Loggers see less hope of gaining a victory at Los Angeles than there was in Silver City, as the Pepperdine crew is rated among the top small college contingents in Los Angeles and in previous meetings have usually had little trouble in rolling over the Loggers. At Silver City, the Axers only score came as Walt Smith picked up a punt blocked by Bill Falcon and scored. The conversion was wide. Passing attacks highlighted by scoring aerials from Merlin Baxter to Joe Palmer accounted for two of the New Mexico squads scores Saturday while rushing plays, one by Bill Robinson from the 10 and another by Robinson from the 30 accounted for the ether. Don Smith toed all four Western conversions.
