1 Monday, October 24, 1949 ARIZONA DAILY SUN, Flagstaff, Ariz. Page Five ARIZONA DAILY SUN the World Loggers Gain 20-20 Tie With Bonnell-Cisterna Aerial Work REDLANDS, Oct. 24 (AP) quarterback A third gave the string Lumberjacks sophomore of Arizona State College at Flagstaff the scoring punch they needed to gain an unexpected 20-20 tie with Redlands University here Saturday night. Jack Bonnell, a 19-year-old sophomore from Gallup, N. has been a third stringer, seeing only limited action this season.

Injuries to Gus Headington and George Haley pushed him into his big. chance here and he capitalized on it. Bonnell's 15-yard toss to end Vince Cisterna tied the game up for keeps in the final period after a see-saw battle in which the lead changed almost constantly. Cisterna, the star captain of the Lumberjacks, presented Bonnell with one of the best targets he could have. The big Lumberjack end has been a leading pass receiver in the Border conference for three years.

Saturday a Bonnell to Cisterna aerial was good for Flagstaff's first score in the second period and the duo clicked again for a 30-year play to the Redlands five. This time Jack De Leon, speedy halfback, went over for the score. Both teams found offenses clicking better than their defenses both gained plenty of ground both in the air and on the ground. Most spectacular play of the game came as Redlands received he kickoff opening the second half. Tucky Wong, slippery halfback from Hawaii, tucked the ball in his arms on the eight yard line and raced through the entire Flagstaff team for a 92-yard touchdown run.

Wong, constantly a thorn in the Lumberjack's side, was the ground gainer for the Redlands crew entered the game the favorites to dump the Lumberjacks who have won only one game this season. Next Saturday the Arizona State squad has an open date before meeting West Texas on Nov. 15 in a Border conference contest. BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil (AP) Francisco de Paula, a busy little man, had a busy weekend at a brick factory, while everybody else was away. He stole 60,000 bricks, hundreds of tiles and a donkey.

Busier than ants at a picnic, he carried away the bricks. Then the tiles. And then the donkey. As he led the animal away he met an old acquaintance, the policeman on the beat. Now he is resting in jail.

Santa Fe Ph. 66 NO AN Texas Western, H-SU Battle To Help Decide Border Title By JACK STEVENSON (Associated Press Sports Writer) Can the passing Cowboys beat the running miners? This stands as the question of the week in the Border Conference.

When the question is answered Saturday at Abilene, fans will know whether Hardin Simmons university or Texas Western will challenge the Red Raiders of Texas Tech for their conference title. Neither team was talking much about Western last Saturday's games. turned a blocked punt into a touchdown to beat the underdog University of New Mexico eleven, 7-0. The Cowboys were getting nowhere against the Houston university line and Ford needed to pitch four touchdown passes to gain at 27-27 tie. The only other game counting in the Border Conference, standing this week will improving New Mexico Lobos against the high scoring Arizona State at Tempe eleven.

Last Saturday the Red Raiders hung a 27-7 defeat on the Wildcats, who didn't allow a score until 10 seconds before the end of the first half. Both teams: tallied in the third period, but the Raiders stretched their lead with a pair of scores in the final period. Next week Arizona goes out of the loop to meet Denver of the Skyline Six in the Colorado city. Other games this week show Texas Tech against Rice at Houston, and New Mexico playing Highlands at Las Cruces. Last Saturday the West Texas State Buffaloes pulled down their second win of the season when they rolled over Trinity College, 55-20, and in the other game involving a Border team, the Arizona State College at Flagstaff Lumberjacks threw a new passing combination at Redlands, and came out with an unexpected 20-20 tie.

Tom Airhart was the big gun for West Texas as he scored four times, twice on runs of 64 and 30 yards. Neither Arizona State College at Tempe nor New Mexico's Aggies had a game last week. Race Car Crash Kills Driver, 10 Spectators BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, Oct. 24 -A careening race car killed its driver and 10 spectators yesterday during the running of a 500-mile auto race at Rafaela in Santa Fe province. Eight other persons were injured.

The driver, Italo Bizio, an Argentine, was leading a field of 25 when a steering link apparently broke and threw his car into a spin. He was traveling about 90 miles an hour. Witnesses said the car smashed into spectators jammed behind a wire fence. The 10 spectators were killed instantly. Bizio died en route to a hospital.

Auto club officials said it was one of the worst accidents in the history of Argentine road racing. Saturday another driver, Alonso Scandroglio, was killed during the qualifying trials for the Rafaela race. Scandroglio's car spun off the track and into trees. Freshmen Swamp Tempe Yearlings 95-13 TUCSON, Oct. 24 (AP)-Coach Bob Winslow's two youngsters have been wondering why their dad hasn't used some freshmen on his University of Arizona eleven.

Winslow probably wishes he could. The freshmen Wildkittens thoroughly clawed the Arizona State College at Tempe Sun Imps by the overwhelming score of 95-13 here Saturday night. The Tempe players probably will have nightmares of red shirted enemy players running around, through and over them during the next week. It was that bad. Gil Gonzales, the ace of the Arizona ball carrying corps, romped to five touchdowns and had plenty of help from a well manned backfield and brawny line.

The Wildkittens made a net gain of 475 yards by rushing, the Imps 146. The winners gained 116 yards through the air compared with 27 for the losers and first downs were 11-8. Charles May Fight December Title Bout LOS ANGELES, Oct. 24 (AP)Ezzard Charles, now busy with exhibitions, may defend his NBA heavyweight crown again this year. Manager Jake Mintz disclosed last night that his fighter may meet Tony Bosnich of San Francisco in the Bay City next December.

He would not say how definite the plans are. Meantime, Mintz said Charles will fight 20 exhibitions in Latin America on a six-week tour starting late next February provided $100,000 is posted in a United States bank as a guarantee. Humberto Mariles, team captain and 1948 individual Olympic champion, came into his own as the scurry jump champion. His compatriat, Capt.

Alberto Valdes, finished off the evening's Mexican sweep with a first place triumph i in a touch-and-out contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police. Mexico goes into the last round of the international low score competition tonight as an overwhelming favorite to stave off any threats from second place Canada and third place Ireland. Eagle Jayvee Team Collects 13-0 Victory (By The SUN'S Own Service) SELIGMAN Striking late in the last quarter with two long runs by Carlos Valdivia, the Flagstaff junior varsity football team took the Seligman Antelopes 13-0 here Friday afternoon. A kick by Ray Baca added the extra point for the Eagle jayvees. Valdivia ran 35 yards for one of the touchdowns and 45 for the other.

The Antelopes were never able to penetrate closer than 35 yards to Flagstaff's goal. Coach Fred Anderson praised the work of Oriol Yozano and Jerry Hensley in the line. The game was the only one involving Flagstaff high teams this weekend, as the varsity Eagle clash against Jerome was postponed until Nov. 2 and the junior high game at McNary was also postponed. The season may be lucky to squeeze through with as many perfect elevens as last year when Michigan, California and Clemson alone closed out with spotless escutcheons. California fell later in a bowl game. Notre Dame and Army, the country's two top-ranking powers, appear good bets to survive the last six weeks of wrangling without mishap and fourth-place Oklahoma may extend its string. But the other untarnished teams -California, Cornell, Baylor, Pennsylvania, Boston U. and Virginiahave rough seas ahead.

The California Bears may make it if they can get by UCLA, winner of five of its six games, at Los Angeles Saturday. This is one of the week's feature attractions on a schedule that highlights sectional Cornell and Penn meet in the season finale Nov. 24. Baylor has yet to meet the southwest titansTexas, Southern Methodist and Rice. Virginia winds up with Penn, Tulane and North Carolina.

Boston with a favorably mild schedule, may be sidetracked by Nov. 12. Safford High Players Hurt In Nogales Tilt SAFFORD, Oct. 24 (AP)-Three of Safford high school's better gridders were injured during the Bulldogs' 31-6 rout of the Nogales Apaches here Saturday night. Injured were Bob Bingham, Dick Bingham and George Grossi.

The Bingham boys accounted for two of Safford's touchdowns, Bob getting one first half and five, Dick one in the final quarter. The only touchdown made by Nogales was by Marcel Bachelier. He went over from the six after three penalties had helped the Apaches go all the way from their own 40. Luke Sewell Named Cincinnati Manager CINCINNATI, Oct. 24 (AP) Luke Sewell, who led the St.

Louis Browns out of baseball's wilderness, today had shouldered task of trying to do the same thing the Cincinnati Reds. Sewell, a veteran major league catcher, yesterday was named manager of the Reds for 1950 and 1951, succeeding Bucky Walters, who was relieved of his duties in the Inst week of the 1949 season.
