10 The SUN, Flagstaff, Arizona, Sunday, June 29, 1980 Two Northern Arizona Undergo Corneal Transplants Cornea Receiver year-old male heart attack victim who lived back East, he said, adding, "I feel very grateful that this has happened." HOYT GIRAGI, from Winslow, says it came as a great surprise to him that an eye donor had been found. All I know about the donor is that he was a 44- BY FRED STEVENS Hospital Community Relations After waiting two years to find an eye donor, two Northern Arizona men successfully underwent corneal transplant operations at Flagstaff Hospital and Medical Center June 20. Prior to the operations, both Henry Kliewer, 70, of Flagstaff, and Hoyt Giragi, 62, of Winslow, were only able to see out of one eye. The corneas of their other eyes had turned opaque, leaving them with nothing but light perception, the worst kind of vision that is surgically correctable. Very early Friday morning, June 20, they both received a telephone call informing them that two eyes, received from a 44-year-old heart attack victim, were being flown to Flagstaff from the Medical Eyebank of Florida in Orlando.

From the outset, time was of the essence, according to Dr. J. Charles Casebeer, Flagstaff death." After removal at a hospital, the eyeballs are checked to see that there is no eye diease, and graded accordingly. If they are determined to be worthy of transplanting, they are put into a glass container which is filled with preservative to provide nutrients to the cornea. Having reached that stage, it was necessary to fly the eyes to Flagstaff and transplant the corneas to the receivers as quickly as possible.

Kliewer and Giragi were admitted to Flagstaff Hospital before noon Friday and immediately underwent a series of screening procedures, including blood and urine tests. The eyes arrived at Flagstaff Pulliam Field that evening. Kliewers operation began at 8 p.m., lasting for nearly two hours. At 10:30 p.m., Giragi also underwent a corneal transplant; he left the operation room shortly after midnight. Today, both men are very confident that their bodies will accept the new corneas.

I can already count the doctors fingers when he examines the transplanted cornea something I could not do before the operation, said Giragi, who workes at the APS Cholla steam plant in Winslow. Ironically, Giragi had begun a five-week vacation on the very day he received the call informing him of the donated eyes. I had no more expected that call than the man in the moon, and it has to be one of the most wonderful things Ive ever heard. There is a world of difference in being able to see out of both eyes. Kliewer, superintendent of the Flagstaff Sunshine Rescue Mission from 1973 to 1977, had previously undergone cataract surgery.

Unfortunately, his left cornea later turned opaque, requiring a transplant. Kliewer says that although his doctor informed him that there is always the possibility that his body will reject the transplanted cornea, there is no doubt in his mind that his vision is already improved. I can see the door and the colors of the Afghan on the couch, he said. Theyre not very clear yet, but Im hoping to have 2020 vision in that eye. Both men will have to limit their physical activity for the next several weeks to avoid creating pressure their eyes.

Since the conditions which require this type of operation are rare, the recent transplants are relatively uncommon. They are generally performed at hospitals in larger cities. Cholla Generator Out of Service PHOENIX (UPI) The Unit 3 generator at the Cholla Power Plant near Joseph City will be out of service at least a week, for repairs. Arizona Public Service Co. said a connecting line between the 242-megawatt generator and the main transformer failed Friday.

APS spokesman Charles Boyd said the accident will have little effect on customer service. He said the cost of repairs was not determined immediately. Potts attorneys contended there was no precedent for a ruling such as OKelleys and asked the 5th Circuit to grant a stay while the issue is decided. There is no decision in the country that is quite like this, said Ralph Goldberg, one of Potts lawyers. The decision will break new ground on habeas generally.

The 5th Circuit will recognize the novelty of whats going on. Owens heard a petition filed by death row prisoners at the Diagnostic and Classification Center at Jackson, where Potts is being held. It contended conditions on death row constitute cruel and unusual punishment, and thus Potts execution would be unconstitutional. The 35-year-old Potts, who for months refused to allow attorneys to appeal in his case, was denied a stay Friday by U.S. District Judge Wilbur Owens in Macon. Another federal judge, William C.
