EAST flagstaff The eighth anniversary of the beginning of local broadcast television in Flagstaff was observed nationwide last Tuesday by NBC-TVs Today show. The billboards on that days show were scenes from around the Flagstaff area which were filmed by a crew from KOAI-TV, which had gone on the air first May 2, 1970 during an evening baseball game.

KOAI is an NBC affiliate and is the only local broad-cast TV station in Flagstaffs history. We are pleased, Wendell Elliot, president and general manager of the station, said, that NBC ran the scenes from around Flagstaff. We asked them to show them May 2, if possible, to help us observe our anniversary. Our crew, Greg Crosman, Meegan Hodge, Diana Cleland, and Steve Livingston did an outstanding job of video taping the scenes. Elliott explained the difficulties in making NBC, in New York, understand the technical problems connected with filming the billboards.

The. large studio cameras, tape machines, and a portable gas generator to run them were required to make the scenes, as compared to what might have been done in a larger station with mini-cam capability. Mini-cams are miniature electronic tape cameras, Elliot explained. NBC called the Monday before the billboards went on the air, Linda Elliott, operations manager at BDay timerPontinuedJI THIS HOGAN DEEP IN the Navajo in the door you can see the Image Reservation is one of the many homes from the set, which is powered off the In Northern Arizona served by KOAI- cigarette lighter of a pickup. Now that the celebration of the eighth anniversary is over, Elliott said, the station can return to planning for its future, growth, better programming, improved service to an area that takes in more miles than many larger stations serve, or ever will serve. One of our near future goals, Elliott said, is to acquire property and to build new studio facilities. One thing about being small, we always can grow and attain a larger market ranking, something the number one market in the nation cannot do. The billboards on Today, the Elliotts noted, were just one more Flagstaff venture onto national TV. It was there, on NBC, during the Bicentennial Celebration, July 4, 1976, and has been there often before, on all major networks, in connection with space exploration activity.

The station was founded and first operated by the late Wendell Elliott, who came to Arizona from a long experience in radio and TV in Kansas. KOAI, explained, to check the information provided' with them. Officials at the Flagstaff station found themselves confronted with trying to explain that not all Arizona is in the desert. The New Yorker making the call, Ms. Elliott said, kept saying, Well, it must be hot out there in Arizona.

All the while, the KOAI crew was looking out the window at a spring snow storm. The first scene on the billboards was of activity at the Arizona Snow Bowl.
