WOODLAND DAILY PEMOCBAT, SATURDAY JTTKB lg, 1897. CIRCUIT RIDERS, Ik TWrtj-Mik Relij Rue i Local Eient Concerning the Records of the Who Will Race (Here on Sunday. Woodland will be treated with a list Of exciting events at Agricultural Park tomorrow afternoon, such as hat never before been witnessed in this city, and such as many of us may never live to again. The indications now are that an immense crowd of lovers of athletic exercises and outdoor sports will find their way inside the big enclosure to witness the exciting contests. Cyclists from Sacramento, Dixon and every town in this county will be there.

The thirty-mile relay race promises to be a contest of unusual interest. Both teams are made up of Yolo county riders and the rivalry is very keen. Fred Hink will captain the Woodland team and Ray McMurray will captain the Eclipse team. The other events will be contests between the circuit riders. There is little need of introducing to the California public Otto Ziegler, the "little demon of San Jose, as this popular midget bears a world-wide reputation.

When his name is connected with a race meet, the knowing ones always expect something phenomenal in the way of records or sensational finishes, and it is seldom, indeed, that they are disappointed. Ziegler, Downing, Davis and McCrea went out to the track this morning- The first two worked an eighth of a mile in 12 2 5 seconds. Davis and McCrea did a quarter in 25 3-5 seconds. The four traveled in a bunch for two They made the first in 2:18 and the second in 2:09. Mr.

Alyward eays the track is in fine condition and the warm weather is conducive to good racing. If there is no wind tomorrow the world's record of 2:05, made by Ziegler at Sacramento, is likely to be beaten. Jones did not exercise this morning, but he is in perfect condition. He made a quarter Friday afternoon in 252-5 seconds. The events tomorrow will be for the professionals, a quarter mile, a half mile, a mile and a two-mile, finals.

The pacing will be done by a tandem. The relay race of thirty miles is for Yolo county riders. Mr. Aylward says there is certain to be some sensational racing tomorrow, if the weather is favorable. In August, 1894, Ziegler, under the care of that famous trainer and manager, Mr.

R. P. Aylward, traveled to Denver, to try conclusions with the swiftest men of that day, and the phenomenal showing this little crackerjack made against such men as Bald, Cooper, Sander, Johnson, Titus Murphy and many others gave to him at once the title of "Demon." This title is far from being a correct one as Zieeler is a i but a demon, but a stranger from the far West traveling Kast and, single-handed, defeating the beet men of the world, not only once but for three consecutive days and riding in about eight events each day, thus giving to him a reputation that as yet has been unparalleled. Ziegler is today in just such form as he was at Denver and the public witnessing tomorrow races may expect such racing as that which set the Denver public, wild with enthusiasm. The DEMOCRAT takes great pleasure in calling the public attention to a rider who hails from this city.

Everybody knows him and everybody likes him. It was on this same track where he rnces tomorrow that he rode his Orst bicycle race. Smiling" Allan Jones is the boy who in years past always held -A-arta spot in his heart for the Wood- public, and who today would mako. a sacrifice to attend a mfet in i cily. He haa been greatly i a in bringing about these great events to be run off tomorrow afternoon and promisee to make a mighty effort to maintain the reputation he has already earned by dint of hard work and conscientious training.

"The Woodland crackerjack is in splendid form," eo says his manager, Dick Aylward, and great racing may be expected of him. In the periea of match races between Jones and Ziegler at San Francisco last month, Allan won two of the three, thereby i i the series and earning for himself a reputation eqnsi to that of any rider on the coast. Clinton R. Coulter hails from Mansfield, Ohio, and holds the title of the "World's Unpaced King." Mia mile anpaeed of 1:59 is A phenomenal ride wbea it is considered that this perform- MM was done late in the season of 1896, when the weather was cold and disagreeable, and although his time hue never been equaled it is eafe to say Mr. Coulter will in the near future serially lower this work, and he also will treat the attendance at tomorrow's meet to some sensational riding.

Clarence L. Davis, a giant iu stature and a lion on the track, is now for the first time this season in fine farm. Davis in 1893 rode like a whirlwind and man after man down before bis terrific sprint. He is the largest racer on the coast, weighing iu condition 190 pounds, and this weight along with mighty strength gives him the power to send a bicycle along with the speed of an avalanche. Davis is now preparing himself for a big match race at twenty-five inilee unpaced and it is safe to predict that he will make the other fellow hustle.

Hardy Downing is another rider it is not well to overlook, he has repeatedly defeated each and every rider on the coast. Hardy is a form rider and no one knows when he is at his best. In other words, he is a surprise party and when his supple muscles are right no One has a license to cross the tape ahead of him. H. E.

McCrae is a representative of Southern California and came dp here to try conclusions i the northern cmckerjacke. He has certainly qualification necessary to I ecome a lender, and it its left to the Woodland public to decide whether or not Southern California can produce such bpeed merchants as the north already has. Bert Elford is acknowledged the most sensational handicap rider of the coast. Since the first of the year he haa won more handicap races than all others combined, and it is well for them all that they look to their laureis, el he will add several more scalps to his belt. Messrs.

Dermoody and Grey have expressed themselves as being very well satisfied with the climatic conditions of this section and have stated that, no better weather or conditions necessary to good training can be found anywhere in the State. It will be necessary to introduce these two gentlemen, as they are strangers in this locality, although well-known and prominent throughout the State in racing circles. Mr. Der- mooily is in charge of Downing and McCrea, while Ben Groy is mentor for Ziegler. Mr.

Aylward has already been introduced to the Woodland public and it is hardly necessary to state that he has been foremost in promoting this great meet. Aside from racing Mr. Aylward represents E. C. Stearna Co.

in the bicycle line and Morgan i with "good tires," and hia efforts in this respect may be appreciated when it is known that all crackerjacks are mounted on Morgan Wright tires. Aa a promoter he promises good sport, exciting finishes and fast time. Local Cousul Judge Lampton has appointed the following officials for the meet tomorrow L. S. Upaon, referee; C.

F. Thomas and M. S. Lavinson judges J. H.

F. Eonis anc C. J. Atwater, timers; E. T.

Uampton, clerk of the course W. O. Kean, Owen Armstrong, James CaREidy and James Little, umpires; R. C. Lennie, starter Hvi'uoe Crocker, announcer; R.

Wallace, Chas. Mossrnayer, H. Stevenson and W. R.Pond, scorers. Buses will to the track tomorrow The fare out will be 15 cents and back 10 cents.
