2 ARIZONA DAILY SUN, Flagstaff, Arizona, Saturday, June 17, 1995 Salt Lake gets 2002 Olympics California company plans to buy KVNA By KRISTEN MOULTON Associated Press Writer SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Thousands of celebrants whooped and hollered as Salt Lake Citys 29-year courtship of the Winter Olympics ended in joy and confetti today after four failed bids. As crowd of 40,000 watched on a giant screen, the IOC, meeting in Budapest, awarded the city tliat calls itself The Crossroads of the West the 2002 Winter Olympics. Utah citizens rejoice, Page 8 Were on our way! shouted Judy Meyers, a Salt Lake real estate agent. Celebration of the IOC decision came on the second day of a three-day Party of the Century on the grounds of the Salt Lake City-County Building that would have ended abruptly as it did four years ago if the vote had gone the other way. Its the best thing that could happen! said Bonnie Thomas of Salt Lake City, who was in tears.

Before the outcome was known. Deborah Bayle, the partys organizer, wept as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sang the National Anthem after Olympic gold medalist Tommy Moe climbed a platform and lit an Olympic flame in a giant bronze-colored dish. The 320-member choir also rendered Its a Grand Old Flag, America The Beautiful, When You Wish Upon a Star and its signature number, Battle Hymn of the Republic. Earlier, partygoers were offered the chance to hop on a luge, a bobsled or skis on tracks covered with 10 truckfuls of snow from resorts in the still-snow-capped mountains. Its one place everyone can come together and set political differences aside, Thomas said.

Four years ago, when Salt Lake City lost out to Nagano, Japan, by four votes for the 1998 Games, a groan went up and the City-County Building plaza was empty of would-be revelers within minutes. This was the Fifth Olympic bid by Salt Lake City dating back to 1966. The bid committee stressed its long-term commitment to the Olyp- lys Herman said. KVNA-AM features local talk, news and sports; its FM counterpart plays adult alternative. The formats seem to be good right now," he said. We dont know yet, long term, exactly what were going to do. He said its not the groups intention to come in and make drastic personnel changes, but declined to comment further on whether new staff or disc jockeys will be brought in. Park Lane purchased KZGL-FM in August 1993 and has been wanting to acquire more stations in northern Arizona, Levy said.

The broadcasting company also owns two radio stations in Kingman, four in southern California and seven in northern California. We like northern Arizona. We think its a great area, Levy said. The Park Lane Group, based in Menlo Park, will acquire the two stations after the Federal Communications Commission approves the deal.

Park Lane Chairman and Chief Executive Jim Levy said Friday afternoon. Levy said Park Lane will file a request for the FCCs approval within the week, and he expects the FCC to grant the request by early fall. Meanwhile, the group will begin providing programming, marketing, promotional and sales services to KVNA under a local marketing agreement, he said. Its the feeling of Arizona around the turn of the century that the Capital pretty much embodies, he said. Critics, especially legislative Democrats, have complained about the scope and the cost of the project House Minority Leader Art Hamilton, D-Phoenix, called it a pleasure palace and even the Joint Legislative Budget committee suggested in a report to the Legislature that the $1.7 million appropriation was disproportionately large. Sen. Chris Cummiskey, D-Phoenix, attended a briefing on the project Friday. Cummiskey voted no on the appropriation and said his first look at the detailed plans didnt change his mind.

I think its a wrong allocation on the face of it, Cummiskey -ad. But the project was defended by McKitrick and Kent Bosworth, assistant director of DOAs general services division. Bosworth said the $1.7 million price tag includes demolition, asbestos removal, air conditioning improvements, wider hallways and restroom doors to provide access for the handicapped and other work nesdays starting immediately at the Lumberjack Gym on the Northern Arizona University campus enter upstairs through the northeast door. RAWSON Associated Press Writer PHOENIX Gov. Fife Symingtons new offices will be a little bigger and a lot fancier than what he has now, but not as big or as fancy as some reports have suggested, the manager of a Capitol remodeling project said Friday. The state will spend an estimated $1.7 million to renovate the top two floors of the nine-story Capitol tower, which was not had a major overhaul since it was built in 1974, said Howard Boice, a spokesman for the state Department of Administration. Denis McKi trick, project manager for Langdon Wilson Architects, said both the eighth and ninth floors will be gutted, beginning June 26, and that the whole project should be finished by the end of the year. Symington and his staff already have moved to temporary offices on the first floor of the Capitol.

The finished project will include a significantly enlarged public reception area on the ninth floor as well as relocated and slighdy bigger offices for the governor. A new stairway will be installed between the eighth and ninth floors. McKitrick said the offices will Dance classes Canyon Movement Company is having open company classes for interested dancers. The actual remodeling costs will run a little over $53 a square foot, which is in line with other recent projects, and not the $120 a square foot mentioned in some published reports. Some of the things weve seen in the press have been a little bit naive as to how this money is allocated, McKitrick said. Its not your typical tenant improvement Boice said critics have suggested erroneously that the renovation is taking money from other state projects and programs. The $1.7 million is not tax money, Boice said. It comes from state trust land revenues a fund that was constitutionally set up and can be used only for executive, judicial and legislative buildings.

Cummiskey said, however, that the source of the money isnt important The Legislature should be in a position to look at all existing pots of money as it deals with school funding and other pressing needs, Cummiskey said. A contract already has been let for the demolition of the two floor of offices and bids are due on July 13 for the main remodeling project. Work is to begin Aug. 1 and Symington should be back on the ninth floor by the end of the year, McKitrick said. Column break Its time out for Dad.
