38 The South Bend 24 A DWAY By WILSON EARL Anybody here old enough remember Teddy Roosevelt saying, "Speak softly and carry big stick?" Bob Hope came up with the new version of that for President Nixon. He claims Nixon's slogan is: "Speak softly and carry a big Greek." Bob rubbed his hands about going to work on his friend News, Bad News and Agnews the dinner for the Eisenhower Medical Center. He couldn't wait and gave his writers plenty of freedom. But there's a danger to. all this.

Because one day soon they'll have used up all the Agnew possibilities, and the public will be tired of laughing about Agnew. It's going to be like Brooklyn and Texas. Once upon a time, anything you said about those places were funny. You didn't even have to say a joke. You just said Texas' or "Brooklyn" and people fell down laughing.

What are we going to laugh about after Agnew? Don't throw him away, don't use him up, isn't funny. Agnew was at Romeo Salta's Italian restaurant in the Chianti Room and ate "straw and hay." That might not sound so great in Ohio where come from, where that's served to the farm animals, but in that particular restaurant it refers to a speciality, white noodles and green noodles. John Raitt notified friends he's doing a Dean Martin: divorcing to marry Kathy Landry, Miss Nevada and a Miss Universe runner-up in '67-68. He then phoned back: "My girl's mad at me. She says she was a contestant in '68-69 and that I've made her a whole year older." PHYLLIS DILLER tells her "Hello, Dolly!" audiences, "My father was an enormous man.

He was born on the 16th, 17th and 18th of September" Shirley MacLaine confided at a party for Budd Schulberg's new book, "Sanctuary that she's completed her own first person book, "Don't Fall Off a Mountain," and starting another. She's more occupied now with writing than movie-making. Artie Shaw, who maintained that he doesn't know how many times he's been married, says he tices "consecutive monogamy" he gets married and stays in that condition with one wife at a time. Organist actress singer Ethel Smith says Johann Sebastian Bach was the most prolific composer produced hundreds of cantatas, fugues and gigues, and incidentally produced 22 children "It's obvious he knew nothing about rhythm." Why is it the Swedes invariably send us gorgeous actresses with shoes the size of an armada? Ingrid Bergman and Greto Garbo, for example, are not on record having men drink from their slippers.
