JBeautp Unlimiteti Her symptoms arent weird DEAR MEG Once a month, just like clockwork, I'm turned into an invalid by my period, A week before it hits, I start feeling worse and worse aching, tired, cross and weepy. Then the bloat begins and I cant fit into anything. My skin erupts like a war zone. Im paralyzed by cramps and can hardly crawl out of bed to go to work.

A doctor once prescribed medication containing codeine, but I hated being so knocked out I couldn't function. My stepmother says it's all in my head, but my mother had the same problem. Am I weird? IN AGONY, AVON, CONN. DEAR IN Youre not weird. One-fourth to one-half of all women experience menstrual discomfort, many as severe as yours.

Nor is it all in your head: Symptoms are due to changing levels of ovarian hormones in your body, some of which cause uterine contractions, and they hurt. See a gynecologist to make sure you have no health problems. He may recommend birth-control pills, which help most women. There are also new non-prescription remedies on the market containing ingredients that fight swelling, nervous tension and pain. DEAR MEG Dianes mother is halfway hysterical because Diane and I are first cousins and want to get married.

Shes convinced that our children will be morons, and she wont listen to any argument. I went to a doctor and he told me there would be no problem. I asked him to call my aunt (shes my fathers sister) and explain everything, but he said it was up to her to call him. He doesnt want to get involved. Will you please print your information on cousins who marry so I can show it to her? PAUL H.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA. DEAR PAUL A Harvard University study has shown that with a reasonably healthy ancestry, there is no more danger of first cousins producing defective children than there is in unrelated marriages. The study, however, has been contested by certain genetic specialists who claim there is an approximate 5 percent risk that a child born to first cousins will have a genetic defect of some kind. You and Diane should see a genetic counselor. But they dont deliver the high fidelity sound of a carefully chosen set of relatively inexpensive components. The nine compact stereos tested by Consumer Reports electronics engineers are complete, one-brand outfits priced at $200 to about $300 before discounts. They include two rather small speakers connected to a modestly sized box that contains an amplifier, tuner, record player, and tape deck. To use the system, you just remove it from the carton and plug it in. None of the systems tested provided sound quality even remotely comparable to that of a moderately priced set of stereo components.

And none could reproduce sound accurately enough to be described as high fidelity, although a few were pleasant to listen to. The speakers were a major drawback. They couldnt adequately render either the deep, satisfying bass or high-frequency treble overtones essential to high-fidelity reproduction. Among the systems tested, the Hitachi SDT-9341H, $200, and the Sanyo GTX200, $250, had the best overall tone quality. Those two are among the handful of compacts that delivered good tone quality with both commercially recorded and homemade tapes.

The Hitachi had the lowest list price. The Sanyo has been discontinued, although you may be able to find it in some stores. A stereo record player should be able to play a record without harming it. But you risk premature wear and even record damage with most of the compact stereos tested. The continuous force of the stylus on a records grooves causes wear; the lower the vertical tracking force, the less the rate of wear.

Most good component stereo systems normally track at less than two grams. Mistracking caused by the stylus momentarily losing contact with the grooves can also cause record wear and damage. Only the Hitachi, Sanyo, and the Sharp CMS-5, $260, could play a particular test record without at least some audible breakup of sound. As a rule, mistracking is less likely with a magnetic cartridge than with a ceramic cartridge. But only the Sanyo and the Sharp have a magnetic cartridge.

The compact systems offer fewer features than most component stereos. But some systems have convenience features worth considering. HES THE ULTIMATE KILLER. SHES THE PERFECT WEAPON. mmk Mi8 SAT.
